The sky that earlier was blue was now turning gray. The clouds were forming and they were dark and it seemed like a heavy rain was about to pour on the land. It had been a long time since it rained in the area and the villagers were worried. Water was a problem in the village and the only source was from rain and since it had passed two months with no single droplet of rain, the people of Asbek village were worried and they had feared for their lives.
"Hurry up Carl. We need to go home fast before the rains fall. You know mummie now is wondering where we are." Lillian told her brother amidst the sounds of thunder that frightened her brother who walked faster as he tried to catch up with her long strides.
"Am scared," Carl said in a shivering voice.
She took her brother in her arms and carried him on her back. They had been playing the whole time with their friends and had failed to notice the amount of time that had passed. As she strode hurriedly heading to their home, she could see many people on the road and she could tell by their faces they were happy because of the on coming rain.
She closed the little gate as she reached her home and she met her mother and father checking if the house's gutters were still good. It had been a long time since it had rain in Asbek and some things such as gutters were long forgotten.
"Where were you Lillian?" Questioned her father as the girl removed Carl from her back and making him stand on his feet.
"Am sorry dad we were just playing in Jannies place and forgot to look at the time. Am sorry." She replied.
Receiving no other word from her dad, she entered the house and she took out the jerricans and since it was her work to fetch water, she had to be prepared.
Lillian was nineteen years old. She had just finished her high school recently and she was waiting for her final results to be out. She was a bright student although not a day came that she led the class a thing that her parents scolded her for not doing. Her parents wanted her to be the lead and failed not to listen to her excuses for not being the top student. Not only was she bright, she was also beautiful. Beauty that she inherited from her mother.
She was the envy of many students in the classroom and also in the Asbek village. Her family was well know because her father was a retired teacher and had taught many people in the village. She was slightly plump and slightly petite but what the men in the village described her shape whenever she passed among them was that she was perfection.
A drop of rain fell hard on the roof of Lillian's homestead and it was well heard and they all knew the rain had now arrived. Laterwards the drops became continues and the rain now started pouring heavy on the village. It was joy to the villagers. Lillian was ecstatic as she knew now they will have plenty of water in their home.
After six hours, still it was raining and on normal days it only rained for two hours. Lillian's dad was worried as the rain still it was heavy. It seemed like the rain would not end. After some minutes, Lillian's mobile phone rang. It was her friend Sue whom she had been with in the morning. She rashed to her room and she received the call.
"Lillian... please help us..." Sue's voice was not clear and she failed to hear some words. She noticed her friend's voice seemed like she was shaking. After sometime of trying so that the can communicate better, the call was ended but it ended with Sue saying that her dad wanted to kill her and her mom. Lillian was surprised and shocked and she rushed to tell her parents.
Amidst the pouring rains, her parents assured her that they would return safely as they went to rescue Sue and her mom. Sue as she was nicknamed by Lillian real name was Susan. She was her best friend and also was her mentor. although they were both of the same age, they both had created different ideas to solve different issues that they encountered in their lives. It pained her heart when she heard that her dad wanted to kill her and her lovely mom.
After her parents had gone to the aid of Susan, Lillian had nothing to do but telling Carl to pray so that their parents can return safely and the problem in Susan's family to be solved.
After many hours of raining, it stopped and it remained calm. Her parents had not yet returned and she had not received a word from Susan. It was dark outside and she was worried. Carl started crying and he said that he missed his mother. Lillian's soothing words didn't bring any peace in his mind and the cries only free louder. She was angry and at the same time worried what had led to her parents not returning.
Carl sobs ended and he slept. She took him to his bed and she decided to go to Susan's place to look for her parents.
It was dark but she was filled with confidence and she wondered what had took her parents so long to come back home. She lit her mobile phone's flashlight and she headed to Susan's home.
When she was nearing her friend's home, she could see many flashlights and a crowd of people standing near a tree. She could hear cries and her stomach went upset when she heard the weeping.
She felt bile rise up her throught and goosebumps formed on her skin. A thing in her mind told her something serious had happen that was leading to the crowd to be gathered at the point despite the cold weather and it was night.
As she was hurriedly walking to the scene, she heard an oncoming siren from behind her and an ambulance came and passed her and stopped where the crowd was. She ran to the spot and before she could reach it, her hand was suddenly held by Susan who was terribly crying.
The mascara she had assisted her to apply in the morning was spoilt and she now looked like a ghost from the horror movies.
