At first, they didn't know the difference between these so-called cities and city-states, but gradually some people realized things were different. That was because city-states were too isolated, while cities were quite different.
People between different cities could freely communicate, and many people also lived within the cities.
The most prosperous places were not concentrated solely within the cities but spread out across different areas.
City-states were generally very far apart from each other, but cities covered a larger area and the distances between them weren't so vast. At least in their past understanding, these cities were a bit too close to each other.
