Chapter 1 - why?

PROOFREAD VERSION

Somewhere in the woods, a lady with short blonde hair cascading to her shoulders slumped against a tree, her body convulsing uncontrollably. "Why...why is it...ARRGH!" she shrieked, tugging furiously at her hair, tears streaming down her face. "I...I can't believe it! How...why on earth did he reject me? Is it because...because I don't dress stylishly?" she wailed.

"Alice, what's wrong?" a concerned voice cut through her despair. It was a lady of about eighteen, with long brown hair flowing to her waist.

"Oh, Cecily, it's nothing. I just remembered Mom," Alice lied, her voice thick with emotion.

"Awww, my big sis is supposed to be the one to cheer me up, not the other way around," the brown-haired lady said with a gentle smile. "Come on, let me cheer you up, okay?"

Without argument, Alice leaned into her younger sister's embrace. "Feeling better?" Cecily asked after a long hug.

"Yeah. Your hug always seems to cheer me up whenever I'm sad," Alice said, forcing a smile.

"I'll always do what makes my lovely sis happy," Cecily chirped. "Okay, it's getting late. Let's head back home," Cecily suggested.

That's when Alice noticed the encroaching darkness. "Oh no, I think Dad will be mad at me!" Alice panicked.

"Don't worry, I'll handle Dad," Cecily offered.

Inside a small, ancient-looking house, a man with an average build sat on a thin blanket. The room was stark, devoid of chairs or tiles. A worried expression etched his face. "Where on earth did Alice go? I've sent Cecily to find her, and neither of them is back," he muttered, pacing slightly.

His attention snapped to the creak of the opening door.

"Oh, Dad, I'm sorry. I...I can explain," Alice sobbed, rushing into his arms.

"Sweetheart, where in the world were you? You had me worried sick," he murmured, holding her close.

"Dad, I just remembered Mom, then I got lost in the woods," Alice defended, her voice muffled against his shoulder.

"It's okay, my dear. Let's go eat," he said, gently steering the conversation.

They all moved to a small room that served as a kitchen. Though their meal was simple, without luxury, they cherished their family time together.
