Chapter 135 - Chapter 131. Decontamination

At the two contaminated sites, several personnel in hazmat suits collected samples. They then returned to the temporary S.H.I.E.L.D. base, surrounded by security perimeters, white plastic tubes, and tents. Inside the tents were research equipment and medical devices.

Everyone present wore a hazmat suit. Personnel returning from the contaminated areas had to undergo several decontamination procedures before being allowed inside the base.

Several workers in heavy hazmat suits crossed the cordon line and approached a container at the entrance. Along the way, they met colleagues returning from another site, also carrying samples. They exchanged nods and opened the container door one after another.

This was the decontamination chamber. Stepping inside, the workers stood under a shower spraying disinfectant liquid and raised their hands so the solution would be evenly distributed over their suits. Then they moved to the next room, where they removed their hazmat suits and placed them in a large box for further processing.

Once this procedure was completed, they headed to the showers to thoroughly wash off any potential traces of radiation from their bodies. After completing all the decontamination stages, they put on new hazmat suits and returned to the base.

The samples they brought back were disinfected and sent to the laboratory. Researchers, also dressed in hazmat suits, had already begun analyzing them. Samples of brown and green soil, green liquid, ash from the fire site, and even small sprouts that had grown through the scorched earth lay on the laboratory tables. Among the brought items was also the warning sign left by Noah.

These scientists had been urgently dispatched here on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s orders. Some were literally pulled out of bed and, before they could fully grasp what was happening, found themselves on a plane. Among them were those who had previously conducted research in one of the cities where the Hulk first encountered the mutated creatures, leaving the city in ruins. Now the research had been moved here, as the situation in this area was significantly worse.

After conducting their analysis, the scientists discovered that the blood samples collected from the contaminated areas were similar in composition to those they had found in the previous city. They concluded that this blood belonged to the same creature. However, they hadn't yet been able to determine its nature. Nevertheless, the primary task was to decontaminate the area, not to figure out what this creature was.

"I heard the guys who came back from collecting samples said the whole ground there is soaked with green blood," one of the researchers nudged his colleague.

"Whose blood could it be to cover such a vast area? Maybe it's Iron Man's doing?"

"Tony Stark? If it were him, he'd be bragging about it all over TV," his colleague chuckled. "And you better focus on your work; we've been ordered to solve this problem as soon as possible."

"Alright, alright, don't worry..."

"Beep-beep-beep!" A sharp alarm interrupted their conversation. Everyone present immediately stopped their work and moved towards the evacuation zone.

When the scientists emerged outside, expecting to see chaos, they found that everything was quite calm, except for the alarming signal.

"What's going on?" one of the scientists asked, his voice muffled by the hazmat suit's mask.

A security guard in a black hazmat suit, weapon in hand, approached the group and commanded:

"Everyone follow me, we need to evacuate you."

"What happened?" asked one of the scientists, struggling to move in the bulky suit.

"Our systems detected something at those two contaminated sites," the guard replied, leading them towards the shelter.

Numerous surveillance cameras and sensors had been installed at these sites, which were under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s control, to monitor any deviations from the norm. Apparently, they had now detected something truly unusual.

"Move faster, you need to get to safety," the guard repeated, pointing towards the shelter.

Several researchers nodded and, without further questions, followed the guard to the safe haven.

In the base's command center, personnel in hazmat suits gathered around monitors displaying footage from the cameras installed in the contaminated zones. On the screen, a thick purple mist could be seen rising above the contaminated ground. The operator switched to the other site, and the same mysterious purple mist appeared there as well.

This unknown fog was rapidly spreading, covering everything in its path.

"You sent the third group to collect samples, right?" one of the personnel asked.

As the purple mist began to move rapidly, a group of researchers in heavy hazmat suits was just about to cross the cordon line. At that moment, an alarm sounded from the command center.

"Third group, retreat immediately! An unknown fog is moving in your direction!"

All members of the team instantly reacted to the warning. They turned and started running in the opposite direction from the approaching mist. But the mist was moving too fast. It caught up to them and engulfed them.

"Third group! Respond! Third group, are you alright?!" The command center personnel anxiously watched the screens, but the team had already disappeared from view.

"Command center, we're alright. It seems our hazmat suits are withstanding the effects of the fog," one of the third group members' voices came through, bringing some relief.

But before anyone could say anything, the purple mist suddenly stopped its rapid expansion. An unknown force caused it to quickly contract, turning into a small sphere, and then the fog completely disappeared, dissolving into the air.

The command center personnel and the third group were bewildered. When the fog dissipated, they noticed that the environment had changed. The green liquid that covered the ground and trees had completely vanished. A new inscription appeared in the place where the warning sign had previously stood.

The members of the third group exchanged glances and then slowly approached to read what was written on the new sign.

"Radiation eliminated))))"
