Chapter 40 - Last man Standing

I froze at the sight. I was standing infront of an empty throne with no king. The demon and angel whom guarded him no longer stood in their places. The others turned to me for an answer, but I had none. There was nothing I could say to them to ease their minds. All we could do was keep moving, in hopes they don't somehow show up to stop us.

I twisted and turned, surveying the area. Everything else seemed to be in the same place, even the unsettling darkness above seemed untouched. I held onto a small sliver of hope, that maybe, just maybe, they'd left and gone back to where they came from.

That hope was short lived.

In the back of the group a scream could be heard, it was full of anguish. It slowly became muffled, as blood slowly filled their lungs.

Everyone turned to see that it had come from one of the male guards. We all stood in horror, staring at the hand sticking out from his chest. It was large with dark claws coming from its finger tips, yet it looked..., human.

The man was lifted up and tossed to the side, flinging blood across the marble floor. Behind him, a large woman stood. The black wings on her back stretched out as she lifted her hand towards her face, licking the blood from her fingers. She looked down at us with a toothy grin, licking her lips as she scanned the group.

A thud could be heard on my left, then another behind me. Beside me, lay a woman's body. Except her head was a few feet away, with blood gushing out of her neck as she layed there lifeless. Within a few second we had lost two people, and another had fallen in fear.

The angel woman walked barefoot towards the throne, there was no trace of blood on her, nor any emotion on her face. She had elegantly killed the woman without staining her body nor her morals.

The demon woman soon walked away, her towering body shaking our own as she passed. There was nothing we could do against these titans, and we all knew it. Everything we'd gone through, for a single book, was it all really worth it.

"That doesn't belong to you, young one."

My hair stood on end, the voice whispered in my ear. When I turned there was no one, turning back to the throne, my heart began to beat harder. He was there.

"Step forward, young one."

No one moved, we were all frozen in fear.

"I won't say it again."

I flinched. I walked through the group, and stood infront of the others. My hands were sweating and my eyes kept darting between the three.

"I'm surprised you've all gotten this far, even more so that you've gotten here at all. But my question for you boy, how did you get that book."

My lip quivered as I opened to respond but only air escaped.

"You see, there are certain requirements to open it, none that you seem to meet. So maybe it was one of you. It doesn't matter really, seeing as none of you will be leaving here."

I turned to look at the others behind me, my body was shaking in fear. The others were in no better shape, it seemed the mere sight of him paralyzed them.

"But, I can't be bothered with you lot. I've been down here a long, long, time. It's time we leave this "Tomb". I'll leave a little present for you to express my gratitude for waking us."

The man waved his hand, slowly the statues around us began to animate and come to life. They shook off their stoney exterior and swung their weapons, getting used to their weight.

"If by some miracle any of you make it out, be sure to come look for me. I do love a challenge."

With that the angel woman, cut through the air with her hand creating a portal of light. She waited for the man to stand and walk through before she entered.

The demon woman looked towards us with lust in her eyes. She flicked her finger, releasing one of her nails. It shot through the air faster than we could see. It wasn't until it crashed into the wall that we realized, another person, as well as three nights had been killed. With a smile she waved goodbye before heading through the portal, closing it behind her.

Nobody moved, the nights stood in their places still getting used to their bodies. Then bang, the first shot was fired, and the nights began their assault.

I was the first to move, grabbing onto Sofia I dragged her towards the exit. I fired at the statues as they tried to stop us. Ray was not far behind, as soon as I made my move he followed. It made me think, maybe the three didn't really bother him, maybe he was just moving the pieces in his head according to my plays.

Some weren't as lucky, the one whom had fallen before was in shock causing his immediate death. As we reached the exit towards the stair, Ray stood by the door firing at the knights as we began to climb them, but the last person was too slow. She reached out for Ray as she neared the door, but it was too late. One of the knights, came from her left decapitating her before she could reach him.

Ray swallowed his anger as he turned and ran up the stairs, as he did a gust of wind shot past his face. A cut appeared on his face, as his eyes widened from the shock.

In front of him a spear was lodged into thw steps, and in the end of it, I stood with a hole in my leg.

I screamed in agony, as I looked down holding on to it. Sofia looked down with wide eyes, she knelt down trying as hard as she could to pull it out. She cried out for Ray as she struggled to pull it out. Tears rolled down her face, mixing with the sweat on her hands making it impossible to get a grip.

"HELP ME!!"

She yelled out for Ray. He ran as hard as he could to get to us, but he didn't stop. Using every ounce of his strength, he took the bag from me, and swung Sofia over his shoulder and kept climbing.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HELP HIM!!"

"I'm sorry, but I have my orders. The most I can do it make it quicker."

"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, LET GO OF ME!!"

"I'm sorry doctor I wish I could help."

He said under his breath, but it wasn't for her. It was for me. He stopped for a second, turning to me he nodded towards me. Then pulling out his gun, he fired a shot through my chest.

"NOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Blood slowly filled my mouth as I watched the two reach the exit and out. I could see a few other figures waiting for them, leading them away. Then I could hear explosions, as the light at the top faded away..... Now I was alone.

--

A storm roared through the night sky of the city, most were home sleeping or finishing up for the night. But some were out, visiting unsuspecting guests.

One unsuspecting young woman, received a visit just as she was getting ready for bed.

"Ugh who would be up at this time.... It's three o'clock. Are you fucking kidding me."

Walking out of her room, she turned on the hall light as she made her way down the stairs to the front door. Looking through the hole there were two men in black suits holding umbrellas, standing there.

Seeing them she reached for the gun sitting on the nightstand by the door, and held it out of site of the door. She opened it just enough for only her face to be seen.

"To what do I owe the pleasure of ruining my sleep."

"Sorry about the intrusion, Dr. Snow."

She lightly put her finger on the trigger as one of the men reached to pull something out of his coat pocket.

"We're sorry to inform you, there's been an incident regarding your prodige, Dr. Sun."

Her eyebrow twitched at the statement.

"Well don't keep me waiting, spit it out."

The man pulled out a letter, and handed it to her. She grabbed it using her other hand, as she placed her foot behind the door; just incase.

"As of a few hours ago the young Dr. Sun, has been confirmed as dead."
