Chapter 3 - 3.) A decision that changes things

After learning of the baseline abilities I possess, mainly compulsion, my time aboard the ship became much easier. Although I didn't like the Sea, I liked many of the crew I worked with.

Jacob and I had actually become quite close. I guess my need for normalcy amid my transformation lead to that as I'm not usually very willing to get close to people.

His dad, who I've now learned is named Jack, is also pretty good if a bit stiff. An ex navy sailor that saw combat in Vietnam and had Jacob late in life which lead to the death of his mother. Just one of the many sad tragedies in a world such as this, or any with human occupants on it really.

Last night the crew picked up some odd looking package but none of us had investigated it yet. Jack said he would tonight.

It seemed that after dinner was the time because he motioned Jacob and myself out toward where he had it stored and began cutting into the package.

What we found wasn't good at all. A big. And I mean big, sack of coke. "We need to throw this out of here, now." I say not giving them a chance to mess with it I almost blur to the side of the ship and heave it off.

I hear the sound of footsteps and elevated heartbeats running toward me, Jacob speaks "what was that man? You look freaked."

"I don't want whoever it belongs to coming to us to find their stuff." I say seriously to which Jack nods.

"Let's go to bed and forget about it. Cole, take the rest of the evening off and get some rest. I'll speak to you two tomorrow."

Jacob and I both nod and begin making our way to our own beds. Neither of us said a word. I lay in my bunk and slowly try to drift off to sleep.

Eventually it works long after I feel Jacob and Jack fall asleep, but it does come.

_

I'm woken abruptly by the sound of gunfire. My eyes instantly take on their true form to give me the ability to see in the complex dark ship.

My bed is further down the ship than jacob or Jack who are right next to eachother. I decide to go to the main deck to see what's happening. As I make my way through the corridor I see bodies along the hallway and the scent of blood almost overpowers my reason.

I focus and blur to the door that leads topside and peek out trying not to burn to death. I see it's thankfully still dark outside and I make my way onto the deck and see chaos in front of me.

Mean looking dudes in black tactical gear are rounding up the sailors that aren't already bleeding out or gone. I knew what was happening. There had to be some kind of tracker in the package. The drug lords were clever like that.

"Hey! Stop, what are you doing?!" A yell breaks me from my thoughts of how they got here to us. A familiar voice. I look and see Jacob run at one of the armed men trying to round up one of the younger boys, probably the son of a sailor who had nowhere else to go.

The armed man turned his attention from the boy and points his gun at my friend. With a a burst of fire my friend fell upon the deck.

Now I decided that my secret means little. I can always compel it away from the crew if need be.

In an instant the man loses his head via my hand. I take the pistol on his side before he even hits the ground and am speeding toward the next guy. He's completely unaware of what's coming for him.

With a violent move I pick him up with my hand through his chest holding his heart. I drop him before anyone else knows what's happening and begin making my way through the ranks with ease.

A couple actually managed to shoot me. But because it's metal and not wood it hinders me far less. I finish the last guy off by biting into him and drinking every ounce of blood in his body.

Turning around to see the situation I find all the crew who were on their knees looking at me in fear. The image I give isn't a great one I'll be honest.

But that all doesn't matter when I see Jacob coughing up blood with Jack beside him looking between his dying son and the monster who saved him.

I blur right next Jacob and Jack almost jumps out of his skin. "I can help him." I say. Feeling his heart beat get slower and slower by the second.

Jack seems to be frozen so I do it anyway. With a bite on my hand I put it to Jacobs mouth just as his heart beats for the last time.

I pick my friend up and take him to his room. As I'm leaving I look into jacks eyes, "Tell everyone to begin cleaning this up." I say taking my friend back to his room to await his awakening.

In the distance I hear Jack doing what I told him. Good. Time to relax.

_

A few hours later

With a gasp I see Jacob wake up again, startling his dad.

"Jake?" He asks with tears in his eyes.

"Dad? Cole?" He asks looking to me. "What's happening?"

At this question Jack also looks to me. I show my true face and see them both tense up. "Well here's the long and short of it. You're my friend and I didn't want you to die. So I made you like me."

"And what is that exactly?" Jack asks.

"A vampire." I say simply.

Before either of them can speak I do, "I'm sorry. But you don't have to go through with it. All you need to do complete the transition into vampire is drink human blood. If not you'll die in a day or two. Regardless, you deserve the choice." I say walking out of the room to begin compelling the crew one by one about forgetting what happened on the boat.

My new friend and I, should he decide to become like me, will then begin trying to get the ring allowing us to walk in the daytime once again. After that? Who knows. I'm just going to enjoy it.

I woke up in such confusion. But after going through those gang members like a sharp knife through paper, my confidence is at a new level.

'Time to stop being fearful of myself. I need full control over these abilities if I want to survive.' I think deciding that regardless of Jacobs choice, when I get to the mainland In 2 days I'm going to live to my best ability.

I see the first worker and begin the arduous process. Blurring up to him I say, "you will forget ever having seen me on this boat. You will also have no knowledge about how the gang members were killed."

After I see his eyes glaze over I blur to the next one.

'Need to do this before sunrise,' I think to myself seeing the beginning of the top of the sun come over the horizon.
