"Now we wait," the wolf answered, his tone calm, patient… far more than Orion felt. "As long as we don't move, don't act like a threat — they'll come. One of them will surely recognize me by scent. Even if I've changed a lot… that part of me hasn't."
Megan sat stiffly atop his back, her breathing uneven against his thick fur. Her hands gripped his shoulders with a tension that mirrored his own. She glanced around, eyes flitting from the glowing stares to the shadows they emerged from. The wolves still hadn't approached, but they hadn't fled either. They waited, cautious, uncertain.
And so did she.
"Orion…" she whispered, low and afraid, her voice trembling slightly. "There's so many of them... Are you sure we're safe here?"
He couldn't answer her. Not with words.
