Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: A Kiss Makes It Hurt Less

The assassin fled.

Chen Ran and Wendy, one a novice and the other disabled, naturally could not stop an experienced assassin.

This was within his expectations; surviving under this person's hands was already the greatest fortune for the two of them.

"Are you okay?"

Wendy hurriedly pushed her wheelchair to Chen Ran's side: "You stay here, I'll help you find someone."

"Don't! What if the opponent gets angrier and comes back for a second attack? Wouldn't that be unfair to me?" Chen Ran gritted his teeth, disregarding his current disheveled state and pain, forcing himself to stand up.

Chen Ran did not trust anyone else in the Ocean Branch.

It was simple; since someone could infiltrate here directly, who knows if there are other World Serpent spies? What if Wendy found someone and ended up encountering a spy?

Although the probability was low, it was not impossible.

He had only asked Wendy for help and not sought other Valkyries for the same reason. The Valkyries of Schicksal might not be as pure as imagined.

Only the main characters are pure Valkyries.

His clothes were stained red with blood, looking quite terrifying.

"What should I do? I…"

The girl's face showed visible panic; for her, the time spent together had already painted a vivid picture in her heart of Chen Ran.

"It's okay, don't forget I'm a researcher."

"When I was attacked, I specifically chose places with thick flesh, so I didn't hit any vital organs. I'll be fine."

Before entering the simulation, he had repeatedly calculated with Fire Moth's computer how to minimize his injuries.

Just like a certain news story about a nurse who stabbed her boyfriend eighteen times and was deemed to have sustained minor injuries.

Although Chen Ran was not that outrageous, it was close enough. After all, his body could not be considered a normal person's body; he did not waste his time during his time with Fire Moth.

Although his recovery ability was not as good as MANTIS, he was certainly not completely powerless.

Thanks to the knowledge gifted by the system.

He felt he had regained some strength and said, "Let's go, it's time to talk to the person in charge."

Chen Ran's injury during the Divine Authority Project caused a stir within the Ocean Branch.

The Divine Authority Project was currently the top priority within the Ocean Branch. Anyone involved in the project, regardless of who was injured, would impact the project itself.

Not to mention, Chen Ran's influence on Wendy was evident.

Although the reason for Wendy's gradually diminishing rejection of the Herrscher Core had not been determined, participants in the Divine Authority Project believed it was closely related to Chen Ran.

At this critical moment in the project, someone had made a move against Chen Ran.

"This is a provocation against Schicksal!"

The head of the Ocean Branch directly classified it: "The Divine Authority Project is the highest priority of the Ocean Branch. I have already commissioned Schicksal's intelligence department to investigate this matter."

The various branches of Schicksal do not have independent intelligence systems; this can only be reported to headquarters for processing.

"Protection for Chen Ran and Wendy has been elevated to priority status. The more the enemy wants to stop us, the more we must proceed. Chen Ran is very likely the key to the success of the Divine Authority Project."

Clearly, although the main head of the Ocean Branch could not discern the specific principles behind Wendy's condition, it was certainly related to Chen Ran.

The assassination arranged by World Serpent only further confirmed his thoughts.

He inquired of his assistant beside him: "Where is Chen Ran?"

"He is in the infirmary for wound disinfection and bandaging. Wendy went with him, requesting to take care of him." The assistant paused and said, "After comprehensive consideration, we agreed to let Wendy take care of him."

"Good."

The main head of the Ocean Branch pondered over this.

At this moment, in the infirmary.

Although his wounds had been disinfected and treated with alcohol, he still deliberately grimaced to tease Wendy.

He felt that if he didn't tease this little girl, Wendy would probably cry.

"I'm sorry, it's all my fault. If I could have been faster and arrived in time…"

She felt a bit guilty, hating her own helplessness for the first time.

If her legs weren't like this...

Then she would definitely be able to protect Chen Ran.

For the first time, Wendy's heart began to surge with a desire, hoping her legs would heal quickly, and this experiment would end soon.

Chen Ran blinked and said, "You should think this way: if you hadn't arrived in time, what you would have seen is a Chen Ran who looks like a dried fish."

"How could I be making faces at you now?"

"Don't worry, don't worry, this level of injury won't kill anyone, it just hurts a bit…"

Chen Ran's pain was feigned.

Only in this way could he divert Wendy's attention.

Sure enough, Wendy said, "I'll get you some more alcohol."

"The bandages are already wrapped up, what's the use of more alcohol?" As Chen Ran spoke, he suddenly felt the wounds on his body truly starting to hurt.

The nerves at the site of his injury began to throb painfully after the alcohol evaporated.

Cold sweat immediately broke out on Chen Ran's body.

"Does it hurt?"

Wendy couldn't move her legs and could only sit in her wheelchair, holding Chen Ran's hand, looking at him with concern.

As an excellent student, Wendy could naturally tell how powerful the assassin who attacked Chen Ran was. Even though Chen Ran was prepared and his life was no longer in danger, it didn't mean he was completely fine.

After all, Chen Ran was just an ordinary person.

If only there were a way to help him recover… even if it just reduced some of the pain.

At this moment, Wendy was unaware that the data monitoring device installed on her by the ocean branch was showing abnormal readings on the computer terminal.

Her body's rejection level of the Herrscher Core was beginning to decrease.

"To be honest, it really hurts."

"It's like Lin Daiyu pulling out the willow, or Ximen Qing punching Jiang Menshen, it's just absurd."

Wendy was at a loss whether to laugh or cry: "I don't understand what you're saying, can you stop joking around?"

Sweat trickled down Chen Ran's face from the pain caused by the alcohol, and Wendy hurriedly brought a handkerchief to wipe it dry.

Her voice was filled with urgency: "What… what should I do to help reduce your pain?"

Chen Ran still had the leisure to joke: "A kiss would make it hurt less."

Wendy's face instantly flushed red.

"If you're still joking at a time like this, then it seems you're fine."

She turned her head away, deliberately forcing herself not to look at Chen Ran lying on the hospital bed.

Chen Ran, on the other hand, was feeling a bit tired.

He was injured and had lost a lot of blood, making him very drowsy. Now that he saw that things were more or less resolved, he relaxed slightly, and the drowsiness washed over him like a tide.

His wounds still hurt a lot, but with the help of the medication from the ocean branch, the pain had lessened.

Humans are actually very resilient beings; once the drowsiness hit, he closed his eyes.

Hearing the gradually even breathing in the private medical room, the flush on Wendy's face began to fade.

She turned back to look at Chen Ran, her eyes flashing with complexity.

The young man lay quietly on the white hospital bed, his face pale from blood loss, and the sunlight streaming through the gauzy window illuminated his face, bright and gentle.

"What's this? Usually, I hear you talk a lot, but lying quietly in bed, you look pretty good too."

After a slight hesitation, she took Chen Ran's left hand with both of hers and gently leaned down.

A kiss landed on the back of his hand.
