While he was in a daze, thinking about what had happened, he pulled out a piece of a watch.

After killing John, among the belongings he managed to steal from him was this small one. There were also scrolls and information.
One of the scrolls was a bit strange. It appeared to be a message and seemed to be addressed to two people: a man whose name was 'Ruin', possibly a code name.
And also, that little platoon leader who was a close friend of his father.
Although he understood what the message said, it didn't give him much information beyond that those three were sending messages to each other about something and acting on something.
The mirror wasn't working, so he couldn't tell what it was for at the moment, though perhaps it could be used to communicate.
Now, one of the names there was important.
Ruin.
