He found Adam's room and entered through the window, after checking that there was no one else there. That's what he thought at first, but after a while, he realized that there was a man sitting inside, in a chair, with a serious look on his face, and as soon as he entered, the man stared at him in astonishment, but then seemed to remember, and went back to his frown. Maxwell didn't know it, but he had just met Caricature. He was pleased to hear that they were looking after Adam's safety.
He approached the bed, and Adam looked at him with confusion in his eyes. Maxwell sat down in a chair by his bedside and let him recognize him first.
"Have you come to kill me, Max?" He asked debauched. "You should have the decency to wear your own clothes for that."
Maxwell smiled amusedly.
"I see you're all right." Maxwell took Adam's hand and held it tightly. "You were always good when you wanted to scare me, but I think this time you overdid it a bit. I got a huge fright."
"Two scares, actually." Adam said wryly, but sadly, too. "I heard they managed to rescue Anna alive... I'm glad you still found her in time."
Maxwell looked away.
"That's it, how do you really feel? Even though you know she's leaving with me?"
"Yes. I just want to maintain friendly relations with all of you and, of course, see my son often. Even by video call, I want to see him every day."
"Nobody's going to stop that from happening."
"Ian is now the only reason I live. Henry told me that you're moving to another country. I'm not going to look for you. But I want my son to come and spend the vacations with me."
"If it's Ian's will, we won't stop him."
"There's something else I want you to do together with Anna."
"And what is that?"
"I want you to tell Ian that I'm his biological father. He deserves to know." Adam made this request for selfish reasons. Ian already knew he was his father, but he called him uncle for fear of hurting Max. And he wanted to be called father by his only son and heir.
"We should have done that. That too, I assure you, will be done. And as for you... Find a good woman and get married too. Have more children. Live your life, without getting stuck in memories of the past... I know Anna loves you, but she chose me anyway because she loves me too. I want and need you to accept that. The two of you have a child in common. You must get along and live in harmony for Ian's sake. Let Anna know that she will be welcome in your home and that you will never try to keep her against her will again."
"I can do almost everything you've told me, except have more children. The only woman who ever made me want to be a father is leaving with you. But I'm going to find a good woman to keep me company. No more Bonnie. Anna has told me many times not to have her in my life, and I won't. I won't look for her again until the day she dies."
"Are you going to kill Bonnie?"
"Yes. And she chose when it should happen, without realizing it."
"Why are you going to kill her? Why did I tell her your secret?"
"Because she will always be a threat to my son, and to our family. And also, because she knows my secret, but she already knew it before you spoke to her. Sarah reported everything about us to her."
"I thought you needed her."
"You thought she was my Camille? Everyone was wrong to think so. Even Anna believes this nonsense. I'm not like you. I don't need a relationship like that to be happy. I don't even like the practice of masochism very much. I like wild sex, and that's different from what you like."
"Andrey... I know you're missing out on a lot... I'm sorry about that. Despite everything you've done, I love you, and so do our mothers. I want to be able, one day, to have the confidence to give you my address again, so that you can come and visit us, and stay with us."
"I also hope that one day it will be like this, but for now, I don't want to know where you are. I'm still not ready to see Anna after what she's done, let alone maintain a friendly relationship with her. I love her. And I'm not ready to see her and not be able to reach her. My heart isn't ready to let her go. No matter how much I fight it, and try to give voice to my pain."
"You told me where she was... What made you act like that?"
"I knew that the silver bullets wouldn't kill me. That they were turning into proteins and making me immune to any effect on Ivo that this ore might have on me, but I found myself human, Max. As if for a few minutes, I had never been cursed with the werewolf gene, I saw that the shots grazed my body, and only one penetrated my body, and that it wasn't fatal, and at that moment, I thought and understood that I wouldn't want to live in a world where Anna wasn't in it. Even if she wasn't mine, I needed her to exist. At that moment, I experienced, for the first time in my life, what it was like to be human."
"Did you bury her on impulse?"
"From the night before, I sensed that she was planning to run away for real. Something she'd always said to you, or to her father, but I refused to believe it, even if I was going to, and I'd already started hatching a plan to catch her and put an end to her. I got suspicious when Henry went to fetch Ian, and instead of sadness, I saw joy in his eyes, that I was wrong. She was ready to leave me. She thought she could fool me. She couldn't disguise it. She started doing everything as if she was saying goodbye." Adam thought it best not to tell her about their night together. It was no longer in his interest for Anna to be a disappointment in Max's life.
"You'll get over it soon." Maxwell said and stood up. "You have my number, Adam, and I'll leave Anna's, too. When you feel ready, come and see us. You're my family too. You're my humanity, brother. And watch out for Bonnie. She won't try to get close out of love, but out of revenge."
