Immediately, I dove to catch the bag which was about to fall back to the zombies.
My fingertips grazing the back of the bag, the bag continued to fall until I grabbed the handle and painfully fell to the ground, keeping my firm grip on the bag. Slowly, I pulled the bag back to the roof and softly let it down further away from the broken window.
Sitting next to the bag and resting on a ledge on the roof, I sighed in relief before remembering Kamile and Lola, it couldn't be helped but that didn't make me feel any better. Why didn't I try to make Lola realise it was futile to help Kamile?
I felt sick with how I only cared for what happened to myself and didn't try to stop Lola more. If I had, we both might have been alive now, not just me.
I looked up to the sky and began to wonder "When, if ever, will this be over?", a few moments passed before I lowered my head and took a deep breath before a throbbing pain came from my right arm. The wound which I had bandaged had begun to bleed, I had almost forgotten because it wasn't constantly hurting,
"Shit, I'm feeling lightheaded" I exclaimed out loud while trying to regain my composure. I reached in my bag for a bottle of water and drank about half of the content before putting it back into my bag and laying on the ground, looking up at the sky again.
"Well, what now?", I had to decide where to go from here, I knew I couldn't last up here for long, and if the zombies tried to get to me for as long as they did with the entrance door, then I wouldn't be able to relax for a single moment.
I peered into my bag for bandages, while rummaging, I noticed something that brought a smile to face.
I quickly took out the map which I had forgotten that I had brought with me. Before that, I continued to look for bandages and eventually did find them. To my disappointment, there was a lot less than I had remembered, likely only enough for one or two layers. Nonetheless, I wrapped them around my arm and took the map to begin studying where I could go from here.
After looking at the map for longer than I had thought I would, nothing came up, I was at a dead-end. Deciding to cool my head off, I stared off the edge of the building, holding on against the railing.
I noticed there were significantly less zombies than when I ran inside the mall, the remaining ones seemed to be wandering around aimlessly. With this, I came to the realisation, the city had become dead quiet, apart from the zombie growls, the city was incredibly quiet. It was almost like time had stopped and the only one to experience this was myself and the zombies.
A dark thought crossed my mind bathing in the quiet nature of the current city, "What if I'm the last one alive?", that thought sent shivers down my spine before I shook my head, "Nah, there's no way I'm the last one, I just met 2 other people, I'm sure there are others." still, the thought didn't leave my head.
I began to think how I was going to escape in the first place. I went over to the broken window and, and once again there was noticeably less zombies than I had anticipated, although any amount of them was too many to try to avoid.
Going back to the edge of the rooftop, I began to search for any potential ways to escape from this place, though it seemed each option I had, had to be ruled out because of the damned zombies.
Finally, I saw an option that seemed hopeful. The sewer system was a place that probably had very little, if any, zombies. I knew the zombies had a very strong sense of smell so they would probably try to stay away from there, so that was probably my best option. Of course, I knew the bad smell would be disgusting for me too, but it was better than starving on the rooftop.
Going back to the map, I continued to study the layout of the city further, as I would have no idea where I would end up at.
Before I realised it, it had become dark and even the zombies' growls had become much more quiet so I decided to go to sleep, while the night was still young.
...
I woke up seemingly in the middle of the day, my head was slightly hurting, the street was again filled with zombie growls. I sighed and slowly stood up, lightly holding my head, and went over to the railing to look over the edge.
The streets were overcrowded with zombies. I quickly understood that the best time to escape would be the night, when it's the most quiet as it would be very easy to distract the zombies in the dead of night with a few loud throws of the rooftop tiles that I still had in my bag.
I went over to the broken window, only to be surprised to see no zombies trying to get up to where I would be. Crouching down, I looked from side to side and spotted just 3 zombies in the entire hall. Nonetheless, escaping from within the mall would be extremely difficult and unnecessarily dangerous, it was simply a bad idea.
Suddenly, an idea came to me, if I could somehow lure them to the third story of the mall while I climbed down, my escape could become much safer.
I went to the railing and began to circle around the rooftop whilst holding to the railing. There was an overwhelming number of zombies simply wandering around. Today, I was going to get away from here.
Walking back to my bag, I remembered the map which I had left in the front pocket. I got it out and looked at it one more time before putting it down. To better understand what I had I laid everything I had in the bag on the ground.
I quickly came to realise I had much less supplies than I had thought, even after I visited the grocery store in the mall. I stashed the taser in my front right pocket and began to organize my stuff.
After about half an hour, I had organized everything in my bag and was ready to leave. Now all I had to do was wait for the night. In the meantime, I began to devise a plan of what I would do depending on where the sewage system would take me.
The day seemed to drag on, I did many things to pass the time. Eventually, I tired myself out and took a nap. After waking up, I saw it was almost time to get on with my plan. The moon was high in the sky and the streets were quiet.
After about an hour of waiting, I finally stood up and took out a few rooftop tiles from my backpack. "Let's do this."
After taking a deep breath, I threw the first tile on to the street below.
