You clearly don't know Victor, Elena said with a soft smile, her tone light and teasing. "He never gives up."
Victor narrowed his eyes and pretended to be confused. "I have no idea what you two are talking about," he said, waving his hand like he was completely innocent.
Then he glanced at his watch. It's already getting late. I need to get going. My dad needs me. I'm all he's got currently.
Elena nodded gently. "That's okay. Just make sure you take good care of him."
"I will," Victor said with a small smile. He grabbed his leather bag and leaned over Sophie's cot. "Goodbye, little angel. I'll see you tomorrow."
He gently touched her tiny hand, then stood up straight again.
"Take care," Stella said, watching him leave in a hurry.
Once the door clicked shut, the room went quiet. Only the soft beeping of the monitor and Sophie's calm breathing could be heard. Stella sat back down next to Elena, still looking uneasy.
