~ With Shisui ~
The guild members leaned forward in anticipation. Even those who had seen Romeo train daily weren't sure what he might be planning. Macao's expression shifted from concern to something resembling pride mixed with worry as he recognized the stance his son was taking.
Romeo extended both arms, palms open. In his left hand, a swirling orb of red fire materialized, burning with intense heat. Simultaneously, in his right hand, blue flames condensed into a matching sphere, radiating cold that could almost frost the air around it.
"He's using two types at once," someone whispered from the sidelines.
"I didn't know he could do that," another responded in awe.
Even Shisui raised an eyebrow, genuinely intrigued by the display. The level of control required to maintain two opposing elemental properties simultaneously was impressive for a mage of any age, let alone a child.
Romeo's face reflected intense concentration, beads of sweat forming on his forehead from the effort. The opposing flames in his hands grew more distinct, their glow casting red and blue highlights across the yard.
"I know this won't be enough to defeat you," Romeo admitted through gritted teeth. "But there's no way this won't make you move!"
He brought his hands together, not quite touching, but allowing the two flames to spiral around each other. They merged, forming a tightly controlled helix of red and blue.
Prism Phoenix Burst!
Romeo shouted, thrusting both palms forward.
The combined flames shot toward Shisui. As it traveled, the spiral tightened further, the opposing elements creating a volatile magical pressure.
The attack struck Shisui directly in the chest, exploding in a brilliant flash of purple light. Dust and smoke puffed outward, obscuring him completely. The resulting force of the blast rippled across the yard, causing several guild members to shield their faces.
Romeo swayed on his feet, magical exhaustion catching up to him. He'd poured nearly every ounce of his magical energy into that final attack, pushing well beyond what was safe for his young body. His vision blurred at the edges, his limbs suddenly feeling like they were made of metal.
As the smoke began to clear, Romeo felt a mix of disappointment and grudging admiration when he saw Shisui still standing precisely where he'd been. Not a single step backward, not even a slight lean. The S-class mage stood calmly amidst the dissipating dust, completely unharmed.
'He took that head on without taking any damage,' Romeo thought as his legs began to give way beneath him. 'S-class mages sure are cool.'
His body tipped forward as his consciousness began to slip away. Romeo vaguely registered that he was falling, unable to catch himself. Several guild members moved to help, but they would never reach him in time.
Then something impossible happened.
Shisui, who had been standing nearly twenty yards away, was suddenly directly in front of Romeo. No one saw him move. One moment he was across the yard, the next he was there, his back to Romeo as the boy collapsed against him.
"Looks like you've won this time around, kid," Shisui said quietly, supporting Romeo's weight effortlessly.
Through his fading awareness, Romeo realized what had happened. Shisui had moved from his position. Whether by choice or necessity, he had forfeited the match by breaking the one rule he'd established. And while Romeo was too exhausted to fully process this, a final thought floated through his mind as his eyes closed.
'Maybe... he's not that bad...'
The guild members stood frozen in collective shock. Their silence wasn't for Shisui's willing forfeit, but for what they'd just witnessed. Movement so fast it defied their eyes. Even those watching directly had seen nothing but the end result.
Jet, whose own magic specialized in speed, stared with his mouth slightly open. As someone constantly working to improve his speed and reaction time, he recognized what he'd just seen, or rather, failed to see.
"Shisui..." Jet said slowly, the name suddenly carrying new meaning. "I think I know who he is."
Every head turned toward him, questions written across their faces.
"What do you mean?" Droy asked his partner. "Who is he?"
Jet's eyes remained fixed on Shisui. "Shisui... as in Shisui the Teleporter."
The name sent a wave of recognition through the gathered mages. Over the past year, rumours had spread of a mysterious mage whose speed was so extraordinary that witnesses claimed he could disappear and reappear at will. Most had dismissed the stories as exaggeration.
Until now.
The guild members turned back to Shisui, who still held Romeo securely. Their expressions shifted from shock to awe as they reassessed the newcomer in their midst.
Shisui met their collective gaze with a wry smile, appearing somewhat embarrassed by the sudden attention. He adjusted his hold on Romeo, making sure the boy was comfortable, before giving a slight nod of confirmation.
"It seems I've been found out," he admitted, his tone suggesting he would have preferred to keep his reputation unknown a while longer.
~ With Romeo, later that night ~
Romeo drifted back to consciousness slowly, awareness returning in fragments.
First came the sensations: the stiff sheets beneath him, the dull ache throughout his body, the familiar smell of healing herbs. Then memory: flashes of the fight, the strain of his final attack, the moment he'd started to fall.
He opened his eyes to the familiar wooden ceiling of the guildhall's medical room, its beams illuminated by the soft glow of a lacrima lamp beside the bed.
"Reckless. You Fairy Tail bunch are all reckless fools."
The sharp voice came from his right. Romeo turned his head to see Porlyusica standing beside a small table of medical supplies, her expression as severe as always. The elderly healer rarely visited the guild, preferring her solitary forest home to human company. Her presence indicated how serious his condition must have been.
"Using up almost all your Ethernano. And for what?" she continued, not needing a response. "To satisfy your own personal grudges? For your own ego?"
Romeo winced, not from physical pain but from the accuracy of her assessment. Had it been that obvious to everyone?
"Will I be okay soon?" he asked, his voice coming out raspier than expected.
Porlyusica scoffed, sorting through her supplies without much care for Romeo's question.
"You'll be fine to move around by tomorrow morning," she said, her tone making it clear she considered this a matter of basic fact rather than good news. "Rest through the night, and the worst effects should pass."
Relief flooded through Romeo. Whatever punishment his father would give him for this stunt, at least he wouldn't be stuck in bed for days. He started to push himself up to a sitting position.
"However," Porlyusica added sharply, causing him to freeze mid-motion, "you are forbidden from using any magic for the next week. Minimum."
"A week?" Romeo's dismay was evident. "But—"
"Your young body isn't accustomed to such magical depletion," she cut him off, fixing him with a stern glare. "An adult mage might recover their ability to safely access magic in a day or two. You pushed yourself far beyond what's appropriate for your age and development."
She closed her medical bag with a decisive snap. "One week. No exceptions. Unless you prefer permanent damage?"
Romeo slumped back against his pillow, defeated. "No, ma'am."
Porlyusica nodded once, apparently satisfied with his compliance. "I've left instructions with your father. If you experience any unusual symptoms, dizziness, numbness, or even magical discharge, send for me immediately."
She moved toward the door, then paused. "And next time you feel the need to prove something, perhaps consider a method that doesn't involve harming yourself."
Without waiting for a response, she exited the room, leaving Romeo alone with his thoughts and disappointment. A whole week without magic. Seven days where he couldn't train, couldn't improve, couldn't work toward becoming strong enough to help restore Fairy Tail's glory.
"Look on the bright side, kid," came a voice from his left. "You managed to make me move."
Romeo's head snapped toward the window, where Shisui sat perched on the sill. The moonlight behind him gave him an almost haunting appearance. With a casual grace that made the movement seem effortless, Shisui hopped down into the room, approaching Romeo's bedside.
"That final attack was impressive," Shisui continued, his tone genuine. "Maintaining two elemental properties simultaneously shows remarkable control, especially for someone your age."
He stopped beside the bed, hands resting loosely in his pockets. "What you displayed out there would easily rank close to high C-class in terms of power. You should be proud."
Romeo absorbed the praise silently, uncertain how to respond. All week he'd rebuffed Shisui's attempts at conversation, convinced the newcomer was nothing but a temporary solution to Fairy Tail's problems. Yet here Shisui was, complimenting his abilities after Romeo had essentially forced him into a pointless match.
"So, I won in the end?" Romeo finally asked, though both of them knew the truth.
Shisui had moved by choice, not necessity.
Shisui nodded, neither of them acknowledging the obvious. A silence stretched between them, though one not entirely uncomfortable.
Romeo's mind worked through his options. By the terms of their agreement, he could now make one request of Shisui, anything that didn't involve harming others or stealing. Most of the guild probably expected him to ask Shisui to leave, to go back to his solitary missions and leave Fairy Tail to those who truly considered it home.
A week ago, that might have been exactly what Romeo would have demanded. But something had shifted during their match. Perhaps it was seeing Shisui's calm acceptance of every attack Romeo threw at him. Perhaps it was the genuine respect in his voice when he'd commented on Romeo's magic.
Or perhaps it was the simple fact that when Romeo had fallen, Shisui had been there to catch him, moving from his position and forfeiting the match rather than letting Romeo hit the ground.
"Then, as for my one request," Romeo said, breaking the silence.
Shisui's eyes closed briefly, his face composed in what appeared to be resignation. He seemed to be preparing himself for whatever Romeo might demand, having already made peace with the outcome.
Romeo took a deep breath, surprising even himself with the words that followed.
"I want you to train me to be strong like you."
Shisui's eyes opened in shock, clearly having expected an entirely different request. For a moment, he simply stared at Romeo, as if checking whether the boy was serious.
Romeo held his gaze steadily. If Shisui truly was as powerful as today's match suggested, then what better opportunity would Romeo ever have to grow stronger? 5 years of training with an S-class mage could transform him from a struggling C-class into someone truly capable of supporting Fairy Tail.
And if Shisui was going to leave eventually anyway, Romeo would extract every ounce of knowledge and training he could before then.
