Penelope's POV
"Run!" There was a scream from Seraphina as the ice broke under our feet.
She was on the ground when I grabbed her arm and pulled her away. The opening to the old cave was only twenty feet away, but the mountain around us was breaking apart.
A huge chunk of ice fell on the spot where we were standing moments before.
"The trial has already begun," Seraphina gasped, and her cold breath could be seen. "The cave knows you're here."
"What do you mean it knows?" I shouted over the rumbling sound.
"This place is watched over by the ghosts of Lycan Queens past." They're testing if you're worthy."
Another crack appeared, this one right between us and the cave opening. The gap was getting wider by the second.
"We have to jump," I said.
"Penelope, wait—"
But I was already running. The mark on my neck burned like fire as I jumped across the opening. My feet barely caught the other side. I turned back to help Seraphina, but she was gone.
