The canyon was unnervingly quiet, like the world itself was holding its breath. Zane stepped cautiously into the open, shadows coiling faintly at his feet as he eyed the dozens of figures lounging across the jagged rocks and canyon ledges above.
Each one looked the same — a tall woman draped in tattered desert silks, raven hair swaying gently in the wind, and a silver chain with violet-glowing links resting against her collarbone. Her eyes sparkled like amethysts dipped in mischief.
"Let me guess," Zane muttered. "You're all the real one."
All of them smiled.
Link whistled from his shoulder. "Ten bucks says the real one's the one who didn't wink at you."
Nyx narrowed her eyes. "Ten bucks says she's trying to get in your head."
"Jokes on her," Zane muttered. "I barely use it."
Then a System Notification pinged faintly in his mind.
> [Scanning…] Entity Type: Phantom Construct – Illusion Class Scanning for Source… … … Real body located. Subtle pulse in shadow signature detected.
Comment: Bold of her to assume you wouldn't notice.
Zane let a sly grin stretch across his face. "There you are."
Without warning, he stepped forward — not toward the nearest figure, but diagonally, across the cracked earth and up a sloping ridge. As he neared one of the Shades, she blinked. A bit slower than the rest.
"Gotcha," he said casually. "You blink slower than your clones."
The figure's amused smirk faltered for a split second — just long enough for Zane to grab the silver chain around her neck.
The world shuddered.
Energy blasted out like a pulse, distorting the light for an instant. Zane's vision swam as the system screamed at him:
> [WARNING: Artifact Sync Attempt Detected]
[Phantom Chain recognizes no current wielder. Attempting override.]
[Mental resistance engaged – Entity: ???]
[WILL CONFLICT IN PROGRESS…]
Zane's fingers tightened on the chain. The Shade's eyes sharpened with amusement... and something darker.
"I like you," she purred. "But you should really ask before touching a lady's jewelry."
Zane smirked through the pressure hammering at his skull. "If I asked, you'd have said no."
"I still might."
"Yeah, but now you're curious."
Her lips curled upward. "Very."
The chain pulsed again—energy cracking through the canyon like a sonic boom. The phantom illusions all poofed into dust, leaving only the two of them standing, locked in a silent power tug-of-war.
Nyx floated nearby, arms crossed. "You two done flirting with magic artifacts or should I bring popcorn?"
Link sighed. "I miss when the enemies just exploded."
Zane took a breath and held his ground.
Then, in a flash of light, the pressure faded.
> [Phantom Chain Acquired]
Power: Create and control semi-corporeal phantoms. Share senses. Phase through physical matter for short durations.
Note: "Don't die. Or worse — embarrass yourself."
Zane blinked.
The woman took a graceful step back, rubbing her neck where the chain had been. Her smile hadn't faded. "Guess I was right to be curious."
Zane tilted his head. "You're not mad?"
"Oh, I'm furious," she winked. "But also impressed."
She gave him a little bow, then turned and vanished — melting into the canyon's shadow like smoke.
Zane stood there a moment longer.
"…She's definitely gonna try and kill me later, huh?"
Link nodded. "Absolutely."
Nyx chuckled. "She might kiss you first though."
Zane sighed and turned toward the next path. "Great. Another crazy artifact. Another flirtatious sociopath. Void help me."
And with that, the journey continued — now with one more piece of power around his neck, and one more mystery trailing behind him like a whisper in the wind.
