Vars continued and finally reached the part where the fairy appears and helps Cindrella get ready for the royal ball. The vivid description of the fairy and her magic peaked the curiosity of the listeners. Vars thought that this would be a good time to take a small break as his throat was going a little numb from the constant storytelling.
William understood the intention of the pause Vras took and sent someone to hand Vars a water pouch. While Vars was busy quenching his thrist , the people were busy discussing the story.
" Hey , you were a religious pastor for a couple years right? " A middle-aged man asked the person sitting next to him.
" Yeah I was. " The thirty-ish looking person answered.
" Which religion do these 'Fairy' belong to? You have any idea? "
The former pastor thought for a moment before shaking his head in disappointment. " It's the first time I have ever heard of such a creature myself. Guess we'll just have to ask the outsider.
Many children present also expressed their desire to meet an fairy to they're parents. The parents just flashed them with nervous smiles as they didn't know how to respond to their request.
Finally a few extra curious folk went up the platform to ask Vars himself about the nature of this 'Fairy' creature.
Vars paused for a moment to think.
" I can't just say that they're made up. This can break their immersion in the story. " He thought
Finally he said " Fairy's were an ancient creature. They don't belong to a religion. They are mystical beings who had an great affinity to magic and could use it to do whatever they wished to do. They loved kind people and would regularly help them but , around... 500 years ago they started to disappear. We don't know why and we will probably never know why. But , that is not the whole truth. Some people still say fairy's exist, in a very small number and they are still helping those in need. " Vars made a simple explanation on the spot.
The people present were very satisfied with the explanation and excitedly went down the platform to tell their friends about it.
Vars didn't want to just tell them that Fairy's were fictional. It could have lessened the value taught by the story. He wanted to provide an explanation that would get the people talking and thinking on their own.
After driving his thrist away Vars once again commenced his tale. The people below, be it children, women or grown men all listened with the utmost eagerness.
The story being told to them seemed to liberate them from their daily life of hard-work and transported them to the kingdom where Cindrella lived. When Vars started to describe the royal ball with meticulous details they felt as though, they were present with all the nobles. Dancing and laughing in the ball.
A very large majority of them had never left their village and travelled to the outside world so the vivid descriptions of the city and ball peaked their curiosity even more and they wanted to learn more about it.
The dinner that many people had brought was left alone rotting, as people just could not turn their attention away front the tale, they didn't even want to miss a second.
William also listened while being seated. Although, he knew what would happen in the story, he just couldn't help himself from listening to it once again.
" Cinderella's sister's and mother ,on the next day could not keep themselves from talking about the beautiful girl that had appeared out of nowhere in the ball held yesterday.
' Oh , she was so beautiful. Like a star in the sky! I wish I was like her! ' the first sister said.
' Oh, she was like a shiny pearl in the vast ocean! I wish I was like her! ' the second sister said
' Oh , don't worry my two sweet gems, one day you'll definitely be as beautiful as her. ' The mother finally said
Cindrella heard their cries while cleaning in the other room and couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle. "
Palpable laughter was also heard in the crowd. Some men had little a smile on their faces , while some women let out a small chuckle and some children started to laugh wholeheartedly.
Although it wasn't the funniest thing in the world , it was funny enough to tickle the funny bone of the people present.
And then Vars went on and on with his story and the people continued listening. Soon the end of the story came and Vars described how the shoe perfectly fit Cinderella's feet and how she went on to live happily ever after.
" And that's why you should always be kind. Good things will make their way to you on their own if you are kind-hearted. " He said.
All of the parents in the crowd nodded their heads simultaneously. They directly looked at their children and started to tell them about being virtuous and resisting any evil temptation they might find in their way.
" And that's all for today folks! " Vars said to the crowd below.
A round of applause erupted from the people. Everyone was happy about something. The parents were happy that there children learned a good value. The children were happy to listen to the fun story and everyone else was just happy on being entertained by the story told.
Suddenly two people approached the stage. It was the village chief and William. The chief looked at Vars carefully from head to toe once again.
" Well done young man. You have thoroughly proven me wrong. I admit that i was wrong. " He said
" Oh thanks but, umm... Who are you? And why are you apologizing out of nowhere? " Vars asked
William seeing Vars's confusion quickly explained to him about how the chief was skeptical about him holding the event.
" I thought you were a scummy trader who would sell or advertise his products in the name of an event but , you have proven me wrong." He said
Vars thought for a moment before finnally saying.
" Well I think you were right. I am a trader. " Vars said
The chief's face twisted and confusion quickly spread on it.
" What do you mean you're a trader? "
Vars smiled and said - " Well Chief. I am a trader of stories! My goods are these stories I know and tell. I am person as well. I need to make money to survive and thrive. "
The chief understood Vars intention and he said - " Well I admire you young man but , I must tell you. Finding people willing to listen to your story will be tough. I can see a few people being intrested but , the large majority will not listen again. "
Vars smiled, he was expecting this kind of response. " And chief , who told you I just know the story of Cindrella? I think your thinking may be too narrow to assume I would just keep on telling this story again and again. "
William and the chief exchange surprised glances.
" So you mean to say you know more of these stories? " William asked in a daze.
" I know not just 2 or 3 stories but , more than you can ever imagine. Stories aren't the only way in which i can express human nature and creativity! This tale is just drop in the endless ocean of creativity that a storyteller swims in. " Vars declared
The village chief and William displayed looks of understandingupon hearing Vars's words. Perhaps they both might have underestimated Vars and the profession of a ' Storyteller ' too much.
Apparantly someone below also heard Vars say this.
" Can you tell another story then please! "He asked Vars in a very loud tone.
Seeing that Vars still had more stories under his belt the people around also started to plead with Vars to tell another story. Soon their requests got too loud and Vars had to step in to calm them down.
" Ok , ok I heard all of you. Tommorow here, same time I will tell another story for all of you, so be sure to show up. Is this enough to satisfy you? " He said with a smile of defeat.
This finally seemed to calm the people down and they happily went home.
After this Vars talked a little more with the chief before finally bidding him farewell for the night.
