Inspector Ayaka came home in the evening after work. There was no one in the sitting room, but there were kids' toys scattered there.

"I'm homeeee," she announced cheerfully.

A boy and a girl of about three and four years rushed in from the room. They giggled and ran to hug her.

"My babies!" The cheerfulness in her voice was obvious and amazing. She seemed very happy. "Where is daddy?"

Before the kids could answer, an average height man came out from the kitchen. He was her husband, Hideo.

"Honey, welcome." He pecked her on her right cheek.

"Thank you. What were you doing?" she inquired.

"I was repairing the sink in the kitchen," he gave a half shrug.

"Mummy, mummy, Kaze spoiled the kitchen sink!" Her girl child, Kaori, reported loudly.

Inspector Ayaka turned her gaze to Kaze. He looked apologetically. "Kaze, why did you do that?"

He started crying. "Mummy, I'm sorry!"

She carried him. "Next time, don't do that again. Ok?"

"Yes, mummy." He wiped his tears.

She put him back down.

"Cry baby cry," Kaori teased Kaze, laughing.

"Honey, I'll be in the room," Inspector Ayaka informed her husband, "I'm exhausted!"

"Alright, let me get done with the sink." Hideo left for the kitchen.

Inspector Ayaka went to her room. She opened her handbag and brought out the exhibit bag with the thick liquid substance, and kept it on her study desk.

"Ugh! How much I hate bringing work home. First thing tomorrow morning, I'll take this evidence to the forensic scientist," she sighed.

She went to the bathroom to take a bath. She came out and started wearing her clothes. While she was getting dressed, unknowingly to her, the liquid substance was forming the shape of an amoeba in the exhibit bag.

She went to the kitchen, served their dinner in the dining room, and they all started eating quietly.

"Honey, how was work today?" Hideo broke the silence.

She shook her head. "There was an attack from an unknown creature. Killed ….. "she looked at the kids. "The kids are here."

"Yeah, yeah. We'll talk about it when we go to the bedroom."

"How was work for you?" she asked.

"It was good. Had so many customers. Everything went well, "Sorry for the stress you went through at work." he sliced a beef and placed it on her ceramic plate

"Nah! I'm sorry for the victims and their families. We don't know who the victims are yet, but by tomorrow, people will start coming to the police station to report missing family members, friends, and the rest."

"So bad! May their souls rest in peace!" he prayed.

"Amen, but not until we bring the murderer to justice. Whoever it is needs to," she mouthed "die" because of the kids.

"Mummy, mummy, Kaori is eating my food!" Kaori reported in her little tiny voice.

"Mummy, she ate mine first," Kaze retorted.

"Can you kids just eat your food? Don't eat someone else's own. If you need more, let me know," Inspector Ayaka waved a warning at them.

Kaori stopped eating. "Mummy, I want to eat ramen."

"Kaori, eat your food. You will eat what everybody is eating. And why didn't you say that before now?" Inspector Ayaka scolded.

"I lost my appetite, mummy! I want to eat ramen," Kaori wailed.

"Kaori, stop crying. I'll prepare ramen for you," Hideo soothed.

"Daddy, daddy, me too!" Kaze exclaimed.

"Why do you want to eat ramen? Must you do everything I do!" Kaori shrieked.

"Yesssss!" Kaze voice was cheerful, he stuck his tongue out playfully at her.

Kaori rolled his eyes at her.

Inspector Ayaka turned her gaze to Hideo.

"Honey, you shouldn't be doing this. We can't be in the middle of dinner, and the kids say they want something else, and you give in to their demand," she expressed thoughtfully.

"They are just kids. They will outgrow all this in a couple of years," he carefully answered.

"I'll go make the ramen." She stood up and left for the kitchen.

Inspector Ayaka's family was now in the sitting room. The sitting room was dark except for the light from the television, which illuminated it a bit. An anime movie was playing on the television.

Kaze and Kaori sat together on the floor, their gaze fixed on the television, giving it their full attention. Kaori was holding a baby doll. She touched Kaze, pointing at the television and giggling. Kaze was laughing softly. He held his sister's hand.

Hideo was sitting on the sofa while Inspector Ayaka lay on the sofa, putting her head on his lap. He stroked her hair gently.

"Will you be able to come for the kids' sports ceremony?" Hideo whispered quietly.

"I don't know. This case I'm pursuing needs my attention," she wispered back quietly.

"Your kids also need your attention. The last time you weren't able to make it, the kids weren't happy. They love your presence."

"But you're going, right?"

"Yes, yes. In as much as I'm going, you also need to be there. They get the fact that their mum is protecting the citizens of our country, but they still need you around."

"I'll try, honey."

"Promise you will come."

"I promise. There is something I need to do tomorrow morning unfailingly. When I'm done, I'll come home, change, and then I'll be in their school."

"You are a good mum. You are perfect," he complimented.

Inspector Ayaka chuckled.

"I'm trying to be."

"You are. You try to balance work and your family."

"I can't wait for the kids to get all grown up!"

Hideo laughed softly. "Soon. It's a matter of time. We'll go on that trip we planned before we got married."

Inspector Ayaka laughed heartily. "I can't believe we haven't gone on that trip yet."

They laughed.

"When they both become adults, then we will go for it," Hideo assured.

"Yeah," she said softly

***

The thick liquid substance in the exhibit came out from the bag and moved on the floor, taking on an amoeboid shape. It reached the sitting room and stopped. Then it spread into a large liquid, then formed into a demon!

The demon started attacking the kids and tried to eat them. They were all astonished. They didn't know where such a creature came from or how it entered the house.

Inspector Ayaka and Hideo quickly rescued the kids before it could devour them. But while they were doing that, it was able to get hold of Hideo.

The kids were screaming fearfully and crying.

"Daddyyyyy," they wailed.

"Save the kids, honey. Go! Save the kids!" Hideo screamed.

Inspector Ayaka carried the kids to her room and locked it. She pushed her study desk against the door to support it. She quickly took her gun from the drawer.

"Kaze and Kaori, look at me," Inspector Ayaka tried to be as calm as she could, but her breath came in rapidly and uncontrollably

They looked at her, crying.

"Stop crying, ok? Kaze, hold your sister! Go under the bed and lie there! Wait for me there! If you don't see me, don't come out! Stay there!"

"Mummy, where is daddy?" Kaori asked, crying.

She knew the demon was going to eat him, but she lied anyway. "He is coming. Soon."

"Mummy, we aren't leaving you!" Kaze cried, holding Kaze's hand.

"Kaze! You are the eldest! You take care of your sister! Go under the bed now! Mummy will come back for both of you. I'll kill whatever creature that is and come back for you."

"Ok, mummy," they nodded.

She hugged them tightly and kissed their foreheads, then helped them get under the bed. She cast a look at them for the last time, then nodded her head.

She went out and locked the door with the key from outside. She went to the sitting room. The demon had already eaten Hideo and was coming towards them. She fired a bullet at the demon's hand.

The hand fell off, and the demon growled. Within a second, it grew back its hand. She shot at it continuously for a long time. The demon was trying to eat, but she was always shooting at it, which distracted it but didn't stop it or even kill it.

She pulled the trigger again, but this time there was no bullet. She tried again, but nothing happened. She gasped. The demon mocked her. She fled to the kitchen.

The demon followed her to the kitchen. It wasn't running; it just walked. She hid behind a cupboard, holding a knife. Immediately the demon came, she tried hitting it with the knife, but it held the knife, bent it, and then devoured her hungrily.

It made its way to the room. It didn't need to break the door. It turned into a liquid and slipped through the door into the room. It knew the kids were inside.

"Kids, come out! Mummy and daddy is waiting!" it said in a childish voice.

The kids didn't come out.

"You want to play hide and seek? Ok, let's go! Kids, hide very well, and I'll look for you. If I don't see you, I'll go. Do not come out."

The demon went to the bed. It raised the bed up and saw the kids. It smiled widely.

"You don't know how to hide! Now you make the hide and seek so easy for me!"

Kaori was still holding his sister's hand.

"Leave us alone," he cried.

He tried to run with his sister, but the demon picked up Kaori. She screamed fearfully, swaying her little body to get loose from its grip

Kaze didn't let go of his sister. No matter what, he wouldn't let go of her. The demon raised her up. Kaze still didn't let go of her. The demon put both of them in his mouth with a wide grin and he swallowed them!
