Chapter 85 - Chapter 85 – The Ashes Await

The moon hung low over Konoha, its silver light bathing the village in quiet tension. Though the streets were calm, the hearts of those who led the village stirred restlessly.

In the training yard behind the Hokage Tower, Akari stood alone beneath the torii gate, his blade unsheathed, its edge gleaming with the reflection of stars. The wind rustled the trees, and each movement mirrored the memory of the lands he had walked—the wars he had seen, and the whispers he had heard.

Madara approached in silence, his armor darkened from battle exercises, a silent observer rather than a commander.

"You're not sleeping," he said.

Akari didn't turn. "Sleep has become a luxury I can no longer afford."

Madara smirked faintly. "You're starting to sound like me."

"I hope not," Akari said. "One of you is enough."

A rare moment passed—one of quiet mutual respect, forged not from trust, but survival.

Madara stepped forward. "The clan leaders are restless. Even with Hashirama's peace, they're unsure of what you represent."

"I'm not here to be their symbol," Akari replied. "I'm here to ensure we don't burn everything down just to feel in control."

Madara nodded. "Good. Because what comes next… is not something peace can survive."

Elsewhere – Deep Forests of the West

A lone caravan trudged through the thicket, its members weary, but unaware of what stalked them.

From the shadows, masked figures emerged, chakra cloaked and eyes burning with stolen secrets. They weren't bandits. They were remnants—rogue shinobi from villages lost to Konoha's unifying hand. Trained. Angry. Desperate.

At the center of the group, a dark-haired woman held a scroll pulsing with cursed chakra. "If we open this," she whispered, "the seal will break. And he will answer."

"What if it consumes us all?"

"Then it will consume them first."

Back in Konoha – Council Hall

Tobirama slammed a report onto the table. "That was the third border assault in two weeks. These aren't isolated rebellions. They're coordinated."

"Someone's uniting the resistance," said an elder. "We've seen this before."

Hashirama looked weary, his fingers gripping the edges of his chair. "We need diplomacy. Not war."

"We need to strike before we bleed," Tobirama snapped.

"I'll go," Akari said, his voice calm amid the storm.

Everyone turned to him.

Madara raised an eyebrow. "You're volunteering for diplomacy?"

Akari looked at him. "No. I'm volunteering for clarity. We need to know who's feeding these flames."

Hashirama leaned forward. "This mission may take you far. Perhaps farther than ever before."

"I've already gone farther than I should have," Akari replied, "and I still came back."

Later That Night – Uchiha Compound

As the torches flickered along the stone path, Madara met Akari beneath the old sakura tree. No words passed for a while—only the rustling of leaves and the silence of understanding.

"She's still out there," Madara finally said.

Akari's jaw tensed. "I know."

"The one who took your voice, your power… she's watching again. I can feel it."

"Then let her," Akari answered. "Let her watch me burn away everything she left behind."

Madara's voice dropped to a whisper. "Be careful. Fire consumes. But you… you're starting to become the fire itself."

Far Away – In the Temple Ruins

The white-haired woman knelt in darkness, surrounded by candles whose flames bent unnaturally, flickering backward in time.

The scroll had been opened.

And deep beneath the earth, something stirred.

A voice—neither man nor beast—sighed from the void.

> "Akari…"
