Chapter 4
Amber
Partner… we are both talking.
I gazed into his intense blue eyes.
It's him, Amber! He's our mate! Amber kept repeating in my head.
I looked at the person in front of me, holding my hand firmly yet gently.
It was the alpha of the pack, Tyler.
We had been staring at each other for a while, though it probably lasted only a few minutes. Suddenly, he let go of my hand, and I felt an immediate loss of warmth.
He looked at me, shocked.
You?
His voice betrayed disdain. Then, he shook his head as if struggling to believe what he saw, and turned to leave.
I instinctively grabbed his hand and felt a spark when my skin touched his.
But he quickly withdrew his hand. He looked at me.
Never. Touch. Me. Again, he said calmly before turning and leaving.
I was stunned.
Tears threatened to fall. I felt like everyone was watching us. They had seen everything.
Embarrassed, I turned around and ran as fast as I could.
Away from the lounge… Away from the whispers…
Amber, what are you doing? My wolf urged me to chase after him, but I chose not to react. I kept running until I exited through the front door and reached the garden leading to the gates, without stopping. I rushed straight home, paying no attention to my job or the uniform I had forgotten to remove.
Amber? Is that you? I heard my stepmother call out from another room. I quickly went up to my room, where I closed the door and fell onto my bed, clutching my pillow tightly. Soon after, Mathilde entered my room.
I thought the party would last longer. What happened? I didn't respond, continuing to cry. Amber, what's wrong? she asked, concerned. Leave me alone, I replied, my voice muffled by the pillow. Ignoring my words, Mathilde sat beside me, placing her hand on my head. You shouldn't be crying now, especially on your birthday. But I have an idea to cheer you up.
She stood up and took out an old envelope. Here, she said, handing it to me. Your father asked me to give it to you when you turned 18. I opened the envelope to find a handwritten letter from my father. Mathilde understood it was a private moment and quickly left the room.
LETTER FROM DAD
Dear Amber,
It is sometimes difficult to understand why you find yourself in such a situation. However, I know you will bring light and strength in the face of darkness. You have become a beautiful and talented young woman, ready to face challenges.
Do not lose hope if everything doesn't go as planned. The Moon Goddess knows the reasons for her choices. If you feel anger or disappointment, know that I am always here to support you, even if I'm no longer there. Don't let your emotions prevent you from seeing the blessings around you. Ask the Moon Goddess to guide you, and you will achieve your goals.
With all my love,
Dad.
My tears were now of joy. My father was right; crying out of sadness was futile. Tyler had discovered our bond, a shock for the Alpha. With time, perhaps he will accept it; I just needed to be patient.
Tyler
A maid. Is an omega really the mate destined for me? It seems inconceivable. I paced nervously in my office, trying to understand what had just happened.
After all, I was an alpha from a long line of noble leaders. Why would the Moon Goddess choose me to be associated with a mere maid?
In a moment of frustration, I struck my chair, sending it against the wall. I sat at my desk, trying to regain my calm.
What troubles you, young man? I heard Kronnos's voice resonate within me. This is not the time, I replied internally, closing my eyes and counting to ten to calm myself.
Oh no, you're not going to run away. I've waited nine years for our mate to appear, and now that she's here, you want to escape? Go after her. She is suffering; I feel her pain, he declared. The innocent gray eyes of the young woman, filled with tears, flashed in my mind, and I suddenly felt ashamed.
Perhaps I shouldn't have spoken to her that way. But accepting someone like her as my Luna seemed unthinkable. I had to make a difficult decision and consider rejecting her.
Don't you dare do that, or I'll show you the gravity of your mistake, Kronnos growled in my head. Yet, I remained convinced there was no other solution.
Romain, join me in my office immediately, I telepathically requested of my Gamma, aware that Max, our Beta, was still indisposed due to excessive alcohol consumption.
We couldn't rely on him.
I'm on my way, Alpha, Romain replied almost instantly. Five minutes later, he knocked on the door.
Romain, I need the full name and a background check of one of the maids who worked at the gala tonight, I said, as he watched, stunned, at the mess I had caused.
I'll ask Mrs. Nala for the details of all the maids. Are you looking for something specific? he asked.
My mind immediately went back to her beautiful gray eyes.
Gray eyes and brown hair, I replied.
Very well, he agreed. When do you need this, Alpha?
Tomorrow morning.
