Chapter 34 – The Scarlet Pact
A private medical room in Mo International's headquarters had been converted into a war room.
The walls were lined with monitors showing security footage, digital maps of City A, and encrypted messages intercepted from unknown sources. At the center stood Bai Xueqing, Mo Chen, Lin Nuo, Meng Zhihao, and the newly released—yet heavily monitored—Qiao Lan.
"You're certain he contacted you again?" Xueqing asked, her voice razor-sharp.
Qiao Lan nodded, her face pale. "Yes. Through the same app. He said 'Phase Two begins at midnight.' I... I didn't respond."
Mo Chen tapped a monitor. "We traced the signal—he's bouncing it through six dummy IPs. But the origin points all link to a property once owned by the Xu family."
Everyone stilled.
Xueqing's eyes narrowed. "Xu... as in Xu Yanshang?"
Meng Zhihao muttered, "Didn't he disappear off the face of the Earth five years ago?"
Lin Nuo's fingers flew across the keyboard. "Correction: he was reported missing. But someone using his old encryption key just accessed a dormant military database three days ago."
Xueqing clenched her fists. "He's back. And he's the gloved man."
Mo Chen's jaw tensed, but he stayed silent.
Then, Qiao Lan blurted, "There's something else. He called you 'Zhaohua' in one of the messages. Does that mean anything?"
Xueqing froze.
Zhaohua.
That was her birth name in the ancient dynasty—one only two people knew. Mo Chen… and Xu Yanshang.
Her gaze flicked to Mo Chen, who was already watching her. His expression betrayed nothing, but a storm brewed behind his eyes.
"I need to meet him," Xueqing said suddenly.
"Absolutely not," Mo Chen said. "He's unstable. Dangerous. Obsessed."
"I'm not suggesting I go alone," she said coolly. "We baited a rat before. Now we corner the wolf."
---
That night, Xueqing wore a crimson cheongsam beneath a long coat, the same color she had worn the night Xu Yanshang last saw her in their past life.
Mo Chen adjusted the hidden mic on her collar, his fingers lingering. "You don't have to do this."
"I do," she said, locking eyes with him. "Not just for revenge. For closure."
He pressed his forehead to hers for a moment. "If he touches you—"
"He won't," she said. "You'll be close."
He nodded.
Outside, lightning rumbled. In the shadows, a man with gloves waited.
---
Back at headquarters, Lin Nuo, Meng Zhihao, and Qiao Lan watched from the surveillance van.
"Anyone else feel like we're living inside a spy movie?" Meng muttered.
"Shut up and keep the feed stable," Lin Nuo snapped, though the corner of her mouth twitched in amusement.
---
At exactly midnight, Bai Xueqing stepped into the warehouse at Dock C.
And Xu Yanshang stepped from the darkness.
"You came," he said softly.
"Let's end this," she replied.
