Chapter 9 - Our Cemetery Date

As Max and Nicol drove, soft music played in the background. After a while, Max turned to her and asked with a smile,"So, did you come up with something to ask me?"In her head, Nicol panicked. Crap. She looked at him and said, "No… sorry."Max smiled kindly. "That's okay."

They arrived near the cabin, and Max suddenly frowned."Damn," he muttered."What is it?" Nicol asked."My dad's here… with his girlfriend," Max said."Oh," Nicol replied."He saw us, so now we'll have to smile and wave like everything's normal."Nicol laughed. "Alright."

They both smiled and waved from the car.Max chuckled. "Great, now I'll have to go through the whole interrogation. 'Who's that girl?' and all that."Nicol giggled. "Looks like we're both in the same boat today.""Yeah, we really are," Max said, and they both burst out laughing.

"He didn't know we were coming here?" she asked."Nope. I didn't say anything. But don't worry, he won't be mad. He's a cool guy.""That's good," Nicol smiled.

"I know where we can go," Max said."Oh yeah? Where?""Somewhere no one ever goes. I went there once with a friend... actually, the day we met, I sent you a photo of that place."Nicol laughed. "Wait… the cemetery?""Yep," Max grinned. She burst out laughing. "Wow, very original place to take a girl on a second date.""Well," she added with a smirk, "at least we can try to summon some ghosts."

"God no, don't joke like that," Max said quickly."I'm serious!" Nicol laughed. "I've been into paranormal stuff since I was 15. I follow this YouTuber religiously. Do you know her?""Yeah, actually I do," Max nodded. "I watched her whole investigation trip to England.""Seriously? Me too! And have you seen The Conjuring?""All of them," Max said."Same here. I absolutely love horror movies.""Me too," Max smiled.

Nicol suddenly remembered something."When I was 15, I tried summoning spirits with my cousin. My uncle found out and banned me from going back there."She started telling Max about her uncle, doing an impression of him. Max laughed, and so did she.

They finally arrived. The road was deserted, surrounded by trees with no leaves or color—completely lifeless. The sky was getting dark. It was cold.

Max pulled over."We're here. Want to go check it out?"Nicol nodded. "Yeah, I do."
