Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - Signed and Sealed

Leonard sat in the back seat of his black Rolls-Royce, staring out the tinted window with a clenched jaw. Eli's quiet humming from the passenger side had faded into the background, and all Leonard could focus on was the image of Elena's tear-stricken face from the night before.

The truth had landed like a thunderstorm — sudden, messy, and impossible to ignore.

Eli was his son. His flesh and blood. The boy he had unknowingly abandoned.

He felt like a fool.

A powerful billionaire, feared by business moguls and respected by boardrooms, yet utterly blind to the most important creation of his life.

And she had kept it from him.

The car pulled to a halt in front of the private clinic Leonard had arranged. He glanced at Eli, who looked up at him with innocent curiosity.

"Are we going to the hospital, Mr. Leonard?" Eli asked, his small hand clutching the toy robot Leonard had bought him earlier.

Leonard's heart twisted. "It's not a hospital. Just… a small check-up, okay? It won't take long."

Eli nodded, trusting.

Trusting him.

Leonard stepped out and held the door open for the boy. He had already contacted the head physician and arranged for a private, expedited DNA test. The results would be sealed and delivered directly to him by the next morning.

But deep down, he didn't need a test. He knew.

From the stubborn set of Eli's jaw, the sharp arch of his brows, the intelligent glint in his eyes — it was like looking in a mirror.

---

Meanwhile…

Elena sat on the edge of her bed in Leonard's guest room, wringing her fingers as if she could twist her guilt away.

She had confessed everything. There was nothing left to hide.

Still, the way Leonard had stared at her after hearing the truth haunted her.

Not with rage. Not with hatred.

Worse.

Disappointment.

She had hurt him, and in doing so, she had hurt Eli too.

Mrs. Walker tapped lightly on the door before entering with a gentle smile. "Elena, dear. Come downstairs. Breakfast is ready."

"I don't think I can eat," Elena whispered, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You must eat. For your own strength… and for Eli. Leonard took him out this morning, but he'll be back soon."

Elena's chest tightened. "Where did he take him?"

Mrs. Walker hesitated. "To a private clinic. For a DNA test."

Elena swallowed hard.

She hadn't expected anything less. Leonard was a man of facts and control. Even after her confession, he needed confirmation. Proof.

"Do you think he'll take Eli away from me?" Elena asked quietly, her voice trembling.

Mrs. Walker walked over and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Leonard may be angry… hurt… but I've never known him to be cruel. He loves that boy already. He just doesn't know how to show it yet."

At the Clinic

The procedure was painless. A simple swab inside the cheek. The doctor had smiled kindly at Eli and handed him a lollipop when it was done.

Leonard thanked the staff, collected Eli, and led him back to the car.

"Are we going home?" Eli asked, swinging his legs as they drove.

"Home?" Leonard repeated softly.

Eli nodded. "Your house is big. And it smells like cookies. I like it."

Leonard turned to him, something warm but guarded flickering in his eyes. "Would you like it to be your home, too?"

Eli blinked. "You mean… live with you?"

"If your mother agrees," Leonard said carefully, "I'd like to be part of your life. Every day. Not just when you visit."

Eli beamed. "Will I have my own room?"

Leonard smiled for the first time that morning. "You'll have the best room in the house."

---

Later That Night

The results were in.

Leonard sat in his study, the official document open before him.

Paternity confirmed: 99.98% match.

He closed the folder and leaned back in his leather chair, exhaling slowly.

So it was real. No doubt. No second-guessing.

He was a father.

And he had missed five whole years of Eli's life.

---

Elena's Room

Leonard knocked once before stepping inside. Elena stood by the window, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

"I take it the results are back?" she asked, not turning.

"They are." He held the folder up. "It's official."

Elena nodded stiffly.

Leonard approached slowly. "You didn't lie. But you hid it. For years."

"I had no choice," she whispered.

"There's always a choice."

"I was scared," she admitted, turning to face him. "After that night… you disappeared. I thought it meant nothing to you."

"I didn't even know you left. You were gone the next morning."

"And what would you have done if I had told you back then? Would you have believed me? Or offered me a payoff to get rid of the problem?"

Leonard's face darkened. "You think so little of me?"

"I didn't know what to think," she said softly. "I was heartbroken. And alone."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally, Leonard sighed. "I'm not asking you to forgive me for the past. But I want to be in Eli's life. Fully. Permanently."

"I don't want to keep him from you," she replied. "But I need to protect him. He's sensitive, Leonard. If you come into his life, you can't leave again. Not ever."

Leonard stepped closer. "I won't. That's a promise."

Their eyes locked. The tension between them shifted — not just anger, but years of pain, love, betrayal, and confusion tangled between them.

Leonard cleared his throat. "I've already contacted my lawyer. I want to file legal documents — to acknowledge Eli as my son officially. His birth certificate. Custody arrangements. Financial provisions."

Elena's heart raced. "Are you… trying to take him from me?"

"No," he said firmly. "I'm trying to give him everything he deserves. A father. A future. But not at the cost of losing his mother."

Her breath caught.

For the first time, she realized Leonard wasn't the same man she had known five years ago. He had matured. He was still strong-willed and dominant, but beneath the hard shell, there was someone capable of loyalty… and maybe even love.

---

The Next Morning

Elena, Leonard, and Eli sat in the lawyer's office.

Documents were laid out on the polished table.

Eli sat beside Elena, swinging his legs and sketching robots on a notepad while the adults talked.

The lawyer explained everything: Leonard's voluntary acknowledgment of paternity, joint legal custody, child support, school provisions, and an emergency trust fund in Eli's name.

Elena listened in stunned silence as Leonard signed each document with precision.

At the end, the lawyer looked at her. "Miss Collins, you'll need to sign here to finalize the agreement."

Elena glanced down at the dotted line.

Her hand trembled slightly as she took the pen.

She paused.

Leonard reached out and gently placed his hand over hers.

"No matter what happens between us, I'll never take him from you. This is just the beginning — for him. For us."

Elena met his gaze.

And for the first time since her rebirth, she felt… relief.

She signed her name.

Later That Day

Leonard stood on the balcony of his mansion, watching Eli play in the garden with Mrs. Walker's dog.

Elena joined him, the wind tugging at her soft brown curls.

"He's happy," she said, smiling faintly.

Leonard nodded. "He deserves to be."

They stood in silence for a while.

"Elena," Leonard said, voice low. "Why did you really never come back to me? Even after Eli was born?"

She hesitated.

"Because I was afraid you'd break his heart like you broke mine."

Leonard's chest tightened.

"I want to earn both your trust back," he said. "I can't change the past. But I can build the future."

Elena looked at him, her heart full of conflicting emotions.

Maybe it was time.

Time to stop running.

Time to see what fate still had in store.
