Jax stood at the edge of the broken ventilation shaft, silver eyes flickering with electricity—not human anymore, not fully.
"What are you now?" Kira asked, stunned.
Jax turned to her slowly.
> "I don't know," he said. "But I can hear the Core thinking."

Far below, the Watchers had frozen.
They didn't attack.
They didn't move.
They just watched.
Like statues built from nightmares, cloaked in the silence of collapsing reality.
---
> "They've paused the protocol," Jax murmured. "They don't know if I'm one of them… or a threat to all of them."
Kira grabbed his wrist. "So what are you going to do?"
Jax looked down.
He clenched his fists.
And when he spoke, the voice that came out wasn't entirely his anymore.
> "I'm going to rewrite their blood code."

FLASHBACK – SYSTEM MEMORY BLEED
A child—trapped in a cage of light.
A Watcher inserting a needle into his neck.
Pain. Screaming. Then… silence.
"He's adapting too fast. Memory leak!"
The image glitched.
---
Back in the present, Jax fell to his knees.
Veins glowing.
> Uploading virus... complete.
New command core established...
Hello, Jax.
He had taken control of a Watcher sub-network.
"Kira," he said. "I can make them obey me."
Kira blinked. "That's… power."
Jax turned slowly.
> "No, Kira. That's war."

Suddenly—ALERT.
> Unauthorized rewrite detected.
Releasing PURGERS.
Kira's heart dropped.
"Purgers?" she whispered.
Jax's voice turned grim.
"They're not watchers."
A wall to their left exploded open.
From the smoke walked a massive figure—10 feet tall, plated with flesh and steel. No face, just a skull mask dripping black liquid. Its fingers were blades. And inside its chest…
A second mouth opened and screamed.
---
"RUN!" Jax grabbed her.
They bolted into the ruined tunnel system beneath the Core.
The Purger gave chase.
BOOM.
CRASH.
Steel shattered behind them like glass.
---
"You said you could control them!" Kira yelled.
"I can control the Watchers!" Jax snapped. "The Purgers answer to something older."
Kira slid under a fallen pillar.
Jax dove after her.
The Purger burst through, tearing stone with its bare hands.
Jax stood, his eyes glowing again.
"I'm done running."
---
He raised his hand—
"REWRITE: FLESH–FAIL."
The Purger glitched for a second.
Stumbled.
Then screamed as its limbs spasmed.
The black veins on its body lit up with silver.
> "You're not immune," Jax muttered.
The creature exploded into code fragments.
---
But before Kira could speak—
BZZZT.
Another figure landed in front of them.
Smaller.
Sleeker.
Red eyes.
Smiling.
> "Nice trick," it said. "But rewriting Watcher code isn't new."
Jax's jaw clenched. "Who the hell are you?"
The figure tilted its head.
> "Name's Nyx. I'm the last survivor of Prototype Zero."
"I've been waiting a long time to kill you, Jax."
