Chapter 11 - The diary of an Urban Legend

"Mikko looks just like any other normal high school girl, huh," Rei thought to himself as he watched her sitting in her class.

"Can't believe she goes on to become a B-grade urban legend," he said, obviously knowing no one could hear it. He was just an observer of the past.

He looked at her — her back straight, with neat hair and distant eyes.

"Her posture is perfect... just like someone trying to be invisible." Rei knew this because he was the same.

The bell rang.

A girl passed through Rei as if he wasn't there... he wasn't. He saw as she approached Mikko.

"She's her seatmate, maybe," he thought. He looked at her light brown hair, soft features.

"Her ID says her name is Yui," he gave it a peep.

"Hey, wanna grab something from the canteen?" said Yui as she waved at Mikko.

Mikko blinked once as if the question took a second to register. Then she gave a tiny nod. Her smile was small but genuine.

He saw as they walked together through the crowded hallway. Students bumped into them, not out of malice—they just didn't care.

"It's like Mikko didn't exist for them," Rei murmured.

And then—on the stairwell—a group of three girls turned.

"Wow, Mikko's finally speaking to someone. Is that allowed?" On the stairwell there were three girls who bumped into them. Rei turned around to look at them.

The usual types of bullies,

Loud, pretty and looked cruel.

"Such obvious wide characters," he murmured.

Yui stiffened.

"Ignore them," she whispered to Mikko, she tried to avoid them.

But Mikko had already stopped.

"Seriously though, Yui, you're so nice. Like… volunteering at the zoo nice. Picking up strays and everything."

"Careful, she bites."

One girl shoved Mikko lightly and laughed like it was a joke. Her books spilled onto the floor. Rei's eyes widened. A few students turned to look—

And then looked away.

"No one's gonna help her?" he thought as he saw a teacher pass at the top of the stairs.

But they didn't say a word.

Yui hesitated, she reached down to help—but another girl tugged her arm, whispering something that made her cheeks flush with embarrassment.

Yui… stepped back.

Mikko looked up at her. Something cracked in her eyes.

It wasn't rage.

Not sadness either.

Just—disappointment.

Rei watched it happen.

She picked up her books silently. Walked ahead. Yui walked behind but not knowing what to say.

"Sorry about them…" Yui offered meekly.

Mikko didn't answer.

Her face was calm, her voice low, almost pleasant when she finally spoke:

"They're nothing. Just noise."

"But I can tell that she doesn't mean bullies, it's the ones who watched and didn't do anything." Rei's eyes narrowed.

As days followed Rei saw her being bullied over and over. There were vulgar notes scribbled all over her desk and lockers, people threw paper balls over her in class from behind, water poured all over her gym clothes. Whenever this happened... there were always bystanders watching. They didn't do anything despite knowing she was hurt.

But this wasn't the strangest thing. The weirdest part was that Mikko... smiled.

"I was kinda happy seeing her suffer, after all she killed two people, but now it's kinda sad," Rei thought.

"Also when is this past gonna end, it's been like 5 days," he added in frustration.

Mikko stopped responding to Yui.

She didn't talk and she moved through school like a shadow on the wall. When Yui tried to speak to her, Mikko simply stared ahead as if she wasn't there.

The bullies kept going and as always, the bystanders… said nothing.

The students laughed awkwardly. The teachers pretended not to hear. Even Yui, who was once brave enough to stand beside her, now looked away when it happened.

Mikko watched them all.

Not in hate.

But with a wicked smile, as if she had gone insane.

The morning began like every day.

The hallways were noisy, packed with students laughing, gossiping, clattering open shoe lockers.

Mikko Yamada walked quietly through the crowd, and Rei walked behind her, passing through all the people who couldn't see him.

She entered her class early, as always, and took her seat by the window. Someone threw a paper ball at the back of her head.

She didn't react.

"These people are the real reasons why innocent people die in future." Rei was now annoyed.

Yui walked in late. Their eyes met but no one said anything. Yui hesitated at her desk, but sat down without speaking.

"If only one of them stood up for her, just one," Rei thought as his eyes stopped at Mikko's bag. And his face turned pale.

Inside was wrapped in a towel a knife from her kitchen at home... sharp.

Rei watched from the corner of the room. He was just a projection, a forced witness, stuck inside the past. His Cursed Eye of Trauma made it all too vivid.

He saw the tension in Mikko's jaw.

The subtle twitch in her fingers.

The teacher turned to the chalkboard.

He saw Mikko stand up slowly.

"Oh shit!" he thought.

No one noticed at first. Not until she walked toward the front of the class, and with horrifying calm, stabbed the girl sitting in the front row in the side of the neck.

A wet, horrible choke sound filled the room.

People started screaming.

They panicked as blood flowed through their desks.

Students backed up, knocking over chairs and desks. Some scrambled toward the door. Mikko turned, her eyes were dull, and lunged toward another boy this time. She tackled him to the ground and stabbed him over and over again—she had a smile through it all.

"What the hell are you doing!?" someone screamed.

A girl tried to run past her, but Mikko tripped her and stabbed her leg.

Then the back. More screaming.

Students shoved each other out of the way so the door jammed. Someone was crying. Someone had wet themselves in their friend's blood. The teacher was already gone—he'd run.

And Mikko just kept walking forward.

And smiling and giggling.

She wasn't targeting the bullies.

In fact, her usual bullies cowered in the back corner. They watched and were too afraid to speak.

Mikko ignored them completely.

She turned her attention instead to a group of students huddled by the windows.

One of them whispered,

"We didn't do anything..."

And Mikko responded, coldly:

"Exactly."

She stabbed one through the shoulder. Another girl tried to fight back—Mikko punched her so hard she cracked her head against the wall.

In just a small time, the classroom reeked of blood and fear.

Only Yui was left near the back wall.

She was frozen and shaking.

Her eyes locked with Mikko's.

"Mikko… please… we're friends, right?"

Mikko stepped closer and tilted her head.

"You stood there."

She took a step closer to her.

"Every time."

Another step closer.

"You saw me."

Now just near her she looked Yui in the eyes.

"And you still did nothing."

Yui backed into the corner, tears were running down her face.

"I was scared…" she said in a quiet tone.

"So was I."

And with one slow and deliberate movement—Mikko stabbed her in the chest.

Yui's eyes went wide.

She collapsed like a broken puppet.

The classroom went silent.

Rei stood in a corner, he was horrified.

Only the sound of Mikko's breathing remained.

Her shoes were soaked in blood.

Her uniform splattered with red.

She walked to the center of the room and looked around at the fallen bodies. Everyone from other classes had already run away.

And then she brought the knife to her own throat.

One clean motion.

And she collapsed.

Tears went through Rei's eyes.

"So this is why my eye is a curse," he murmured.

The world around Rei cracked once more and now he was back to present.

He was glaring Mikko right in her eye.

"You brat, what did you do!?" screamed the legend. Rei had a calm expression now.

"You've already had your revenge, Mikko. You need to stop now." Rei took a step forward.

"You don't know anything about it, so shut up..." before she could continue she felt something burn on her skin.

Alyssa had snuck up behind her and threw her paralysis ash.

"That's Alyssa for ya," shouted Ezio. He looked outside the window and saw the glimpse of moonrise.

"The time is finally right," he gave a smirk.

"Ezio, now!" shouted Alyssa.

"Hey Rei, we're gonna chat later about what you saw, but for now she has to go."

Mikko tried to move in frustration but she couldn't.

Then with a smirk Ezio took out his hand mirror and a flaming candle. Then pointing it at Mikko he added:

"Bloody Mary."

"Bloody Mary."

"Bloody Mary."
