Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: AWAKENING

The sun rose over Jacksonville, casting a golden glow over the construction site. Martha stood on the bed of Finn's pickup truck, her silver braid shining like a beacon. Fifty residents formed a human chain, blocking the entrance.

Avery gripped Dale's shoulder, having promised his mother this would be safe. That was before he saw the new sign bolted on the fence: TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED, ABELS DEVELOPMENT PROPERTY

Finn muttered, "Like we're foreigners in our own town," as he hefted his wrench. Black SUVs arrived, Isabelle saw it from the tinted glass of her Mercedes window. She'd come to deliver her mother's revised blueprints- "make yourself useful" Her mother told her.

When the shouting began, security guards in Abel-black swarmed the protesters. A rock flew, and chaos erupted. Avery shoved Dale behind him as a guard lunged at Martha. The sound of shattering glass and raised voices filled the air. "STOP!" Isabelle's scream died in the chaos. The guards pushed forward, their batons gleaming in the morning light.

Avery's eyes locked onto the guard threatening Martha. He knew he had to act fast. With a swift motion, he grabbed the guard's arm, twisting it away from Martha. The guard stumbled, and Avery stood tall, his eyes flashing with defiance.

Just as it seemed the situation would escalate further, Eleanor Abel emerged from one of the SUVs. Her voice cut through the chaos: "Enough." The crowd stilled, and the guards parted to let her through, was as if the people of Jacksonville was witnessing Moses parting the red sea before their own eyes. She stepped forward, pristine in white linen, her eyes scanning the scene.

In her office, Eleanor offered Avery a contract his family's house in exchange for ending the rebellion, and to work for the Abels, "you will never stink of grease again" Eleanor spoke out softly. Avery hesitated, torn between his family's needs and his principles. Isabelle, silent until now, spoke up: "Mother, this is—" But Eleanor cut her off: "Business." Avery's eyes narrowed as he read the contract, his mind racing with the implications.

Isabelle stared at her mother, seeing the truth: they weren't saviors, but locusts. The realization shook her to her core. She wondered how she'd been so blind to her mother's true intentions. As she watched Avery's reaction, she felt a pang of guilt for not speaking up sooner.

Avery tore the contract in half, refusing to betray his family and community. Finn waited outside, asking,

"Well?"

Avery's answer was clear: some lines couldn't be uncrossed. Together, they walked away from the Abel Development's grasp, the sun setting behind them.

As night fell, flames engulfed the construction site. Isabelle's balcony offered a perfect view of the inferno. She spotted a figure running—Avery? Her phone buzzed with her mother's command: "Come downstairs. We own this town now." But Isabelle hesitated, unsure whose side she was on.

The fire raged on, a symbol of resistance against the Abel Development's stronghold. Avery, Finn, and the townspeople stood united, determined to fight for their homes and their future. The question was: would they succeed, or would the Abels crush their spirits? The flames seemed to answer, casting a fiery glow over the town.

Isabelle stood frozen, her eyes fixed on the flames. She knew her mother's ambition would stop at nothing. But Avery's bravery had sparked something within her. She wondered if she could find a way to stand with the townspeople, or if she'd be forever bound to her mother's will.

The fire brought the town together. Residents gathered, sharing stories and

strategies. Avery and Finn stood at the forefront, rallying the crowd. As the night wore on, the flames died down, but the determination remained. Jacksonville would fight for its future, and Avery would lead the charge
