Chapter 4 - Interlude to first mission

"Ugh, fuck." I groan as I sit up. Looks like I survived.

"Good, you're awake. The doctors said you would wake up at any moment." My eyes turn to the corner of the room to find a Viltrumite woman with her hands behind her back. Her calculating gaze sends shivers down my spine.

"I won right? So I'm not gonna be executed." I ask, and the Viltrumite woman nods. I note her very familiar appearance but I can't put a hand on it.

"Indeed. Thidor was weak. And so he met his death at your hands. You've proven worthy of your heritage and will now take his duties and place on squad Beta." The woman explains as I blink.

"What? I don't get a debriefing on whatever to hell 'Thidor' was up to before I killed him and took his place?" I question in confusion as the woman shrugs. A weird thing to see from a Viltrumite.

"Your squad captain will brief you, your living space when you aren't off the planet on missions is located in sector 8-b. If you're lost just ask a robot or slave alien for directions." With that, she promptly floats out of the room.

I released a sigh, She gave me the creeps. Her stare felt like she was analyzing me. Looking for something. Whatever that is I don't know. Neither do I wanna find out.

Short brown hair. Blue eyes. Fucking Anissa. I shiver even more. Horrifying. Whatever led to her sexually assaulting Mark is something I wanna avoid. So I'll just avoid her.

I blink a bit as a robot hovers into the room it passes me the traditional Viltrumite get-up and hovers out immediately.

After getting dressed. The moment I left the room I was met with a man I immediately recognized. Omni man.

Well, he isn't Omniman here. More so just Nolan. He gives me a stern look over. I stand a bit taller under his gaze. Not giving off any weakness. The Viltrumites are an eugenics society. I've already proven strong enough to be amongst them.

"Tomorrow. Meet me on our moon. I'll be debriefing you on your first mission." His deep voice holds nothing but professionalism. He's easily one of the strongest Viltrumites I've seen.

Outside of maybe conquest dear old 'Dad,' he's probably the strongest Viltrumite I've interacted with.

I just nod and float away. After about 5 minutes of flying around, I finally cave in and ask for directional help.

The door to my new 'home' opens by itself when I put my hand on the pad outside of it. Inside is as bland as my prison cell was.

No furniture. No floating TV. Just a bed, a fridge of some sort. And that's it. I sigh. What did I expect from robotic murder aliens? These guys are probably also never home since fighting lanterns and taking over planets across the galaxy has to be a bit time-consuming.

Finally at peace with myself. I decided to enjoy myself by sleeping all day. What? I haven't had proper rest in a while.

The next day came immediately. Leaving my living area. I slowly float up as I mentally prepare myself to enter the void of space. Ignoring other floating figures flying around the planet doing their task. I slowly rise to the tip of the planet's atmosphere.

Looking at Viltrum's red moon. With my enhanced vision I can spot Nolan and another male Viltrumite floating. Both of them notice me and Nolan tilts his head at me.

I blink. They're far away. Very fucking far away. Even at my top speed, it's gonna take me like 2 days to get to them.

That was my initial thought. Before I began flying to them at least. Immediately going my top speed so as not to embarrass myself. The difference was immediate.

Flying in space. Viltrumites. The way my body rocketed forward. My vision darkened but I remained aware. That's all the hint I got that I moved at speeds beyond light.

Also. Did I forget to mention that space is fucking cold? The small amount of precipitation on my body Visually crystallized under my eyes. And the feeling of being wrapped up in a wet blanket engulfed me.

I almost shot past the moon. But stopped myself just in front of the two older Viltrumites.

('Good, you're here on time. I assume this is your first time flying outside of a planet's atmosphere? Due to our subconscious. We never get our true full speed on a planet unless we want to. We move at speeds that could ignite the atmosphere leading to large explosions.) I blink as Nolan educates me. That's cool.

(Yea, I didn't expect to move that fast.) I respond. We're speaking mentally so I assume Viltrumites have Minor Telepathy of some sort.

(Well get used to it, newbie. You don't look much surprised that Thidor didn't rip you in half) A gruff unfamiliar voice projects in my head as I turn and stare blankly at the other Viltrumite.

Bald head. Mustache. White. Somehow fat. But more so strongman fat. Don't recognize him.

(Yea? Sounds like you were fond of that brute. Did it hurt your feelings when you found out he was dead? I made sure his end wasn't anything close to peaceful.) I taunt. As if I'm going to let this no name Viltrumite shit talk me.

(Why you!)

The older Viltrumite moves closer to me as I get ready for a fight before Nolan intervenes. His figure blurs as he's suddenly between us at speeds I could barely follow

(Enough, arguing is useless. And you. Varnis. Arguing with a fledgling over Thidor. Regardless of whether he was your son or not. He met his fate by being weak, and if you can't accept that I'll personally see that you meet the same for betraying the empire's ways.) Nolan's voice projects coldly to both our minds as I spot the other Viltrumite freeze slightly at Nolan's threat before I blink.

Thidor was his son? Oh man. That's not good. I take a large mental note to watch my back around this Varnis guy. Viltrumites don't do familial shit but I wouldn't doubt he'd attack me as a matter of pride

I ignore the intense stare that the two ancient beings have before they seem to settle down.

(Now. On to our mission debrief. Our Scouts have found a planet some 3 light-years away They've achieved space travel not to long ago. Primitive. But their people live long and are somewhat sturdy for a lesser race. The perfect slaves. They refer to themselves are Tralaxis.)

I nod. My mind is a bit shaken. We're going to be enslaving people.

(After the scouts sent were met with heavy resistance. They've requested a squad of 3 to dismantle the planet's defenses and take over. Requirements include leaving 70% of the population alive. Destroy rebel cells. Capture key figures for specialized tasks later. Neutralize planetary leadership-)I turn my attention elsewhere as Nolan begins to ramble on robotically.

(We'll be departing now.) Is all I hear as I turn my attention to the older Viltrumites in slight surprise.

(Now? Where's our ship? 3 lightyears away is very far shouldn't we be taking a spaceship?) I ask genuinely curious as I get shocked looks from the older Viltrumites before Varnis looks heavily amused.

(Listen here 'Vergil' we move faster than any ship available. Even one of our more advanced ships can barely match half the speed of a young Viltrumite. Even you would easily outspeed our fastest of ships.) Varnis explains as Nolan adds on.

(Not only is a ship more noticeable. But they're slow. We don't need them at all. You moved millions of Clicks in the blink of an eye not to long ago and you're worried about a ship?) What the hell is a click? Alien miles I assume.

(Then why do we even have ships at all? If we can do all of this with just our bodies alone?) I question. Gesturing to the planet in the distance even now numerous ships can be seen flying to and leaving the planet as Nolan stares.

(Simple. Just because we can do all of that do you think lesser species can? We need ships to transport slaves to places like the Vega system for funds. Also no matter how fast we can fly. We can only hold our breaths for so long so while they aren't a necessity they are needed.) Nodding at the small lecture I sigh internally. Ignoring the fact that I don't need to breath at all if I don't want to, and that I'm currently not holding my breath either.

(Then how do we know we're to find the planet. Isn't the universe like constantly moving or something?) That gets confused looks from the both of them.

(No.)

That's all I get before we slowly fly a distance away from the moon.

(Just follow me, we'll be their in roughly three Viltrum rotations. Or 56 hours.) Nolan then blasts off. Quickly followed by Varnis and myself

I'd love to say I kept up with their impossible speed easily. That I was such a badass that we flew side by side. But I'd be lying. It's like being a 5 year old and chasing an older kid. Your so close yet so fucking far away.

I can still see them so I follow easily enough. The very space around the three of us warps as I feel my body begin to feel a bit weird.

I notice that the three of us simultaneously picked up speed. 3 light years in 56 hours. That shit sounds impossible.

But clearly it isn't.

The more we flew at speeds far beyond that of light the more I got better at flying at such a speed. When flying at these speeds your basically blind. I don't know how to explain it but while I'm blind. I can still 'see'

I'll ask Nolan later. But it's like echo location but not actually echo location if that makes sense.

Finnaly coming to a halt after non stop flying. We all pause. Floating to the dark side of the local moon I note how serious the older Viltrumites look.

Despite the darkness Nolans eyes gleam visibly his face cold. Our hair flowed due to the lack of gravity as red lights shined around the three of us

Nolans face hardened slight and Varnis smiled wickedly.

(They know we're here.)

The next thing I know three large beams of pulsing red energy shot towards us. Colliding with each of us in a massive explosion.
