You're a good cop, dad. You put on that badge and carry that gun because you know if you don't someone who shouldn't will. When I put on this mask, I only did it -- Because it freed me from responsibility. I thought I was special. And Peter Parker died because he tried to follow my example. I have to take responsibility for that. To make his death mean something. But I can't do it in a jail cell. This mask is my badge now. If I don't define what it means... monsters like this will. This is where I'm needed most.

Gwen Stacy was born in Forest Hills to George and Helen Stacy. Following her mother's death, she was raised by George alone. Gwen's free spirit and artistic inclinations often put her at odds with the type of ethics her father worked to instill. As a result of this contrast with her father, Gwen would often retreat into quiet seclusion and play the drums.
Over time, she developed a friendship with her neighbor and fellow introvert Peter Parker, sharing their love for music.[29] At Midtown High School, Gwen developed relationships with other students, a group of girls with whom she formed the band, The Mary Janes,[30] and rebellious affluent student Harry Osborn.[25]
After being bitten by a genetically-engineered spider, Gwen was granted arachnid-like super-powers, and started a career as a crimefighter, dubbed by the media as "Spider-Woman." She was given a costume and a set of Web-Shooters by retired crimefighter Janet van Dyne. Gwen spent most of her early adventures focused on exploiting and maintaining her newfound attention more than helping those in need; however, Gwen's behavior changed after her father expressed he believed Spider-Woman could easily help people.[30]
Gwen Stacy becomes Spider-Woman
Spider-Woman's influence also caused one of the biggest tragedies in Gwen's life. The bullied Peter Parker, desperate to be special like his idol Spider-Woman, conducted an experiment that turned him into a Lizard-like creature. Parker crashed the Midtown Senior Prom, where Gwen fought him. Despite his pleas for de-escalation, Gwen did not pull any punches. Following Gwen's beatdown, Peter returned to his human form but, due to the injuries sustained at Gwen's attacks, he died.[31] With no evidence or link to his transformation, Spider-Woman was blamed by the media for Peter's death and branded a criminal.[32]
Haunted by Peter's death, Gwen doubled her efforts to fight crime to redeem herself. Additionally, Gwen's father George was tasked with conducting the NYPD investigation to capture Spider-Woman. This drew the attention of Matt Murdock - a corrupt lawyer, leader of the Hand ninja, and the right hand and successor to New York's Kingpin of crime - who sent hitman Aleksei Sytsevich to kill George in an attempt to make an ally of Spider-Woman. After thwarting the murder attempt, Gwen found herself held at gunpoint by her father, and she was forced to reveal her double identity. She pleaded her innocence, and swore to never rest until criminals like the Kingpin were stopped. Captain Stacy told her to leave the scene before he changed his mind.[30][29]
Spider-Verse
Gwen was one of the first spider-totems to join Spider UK's Spider-Army in order to combat the Inheritors during the Great Hunt.[30][33]
Among the Spider-Army
She was sent to Earth-21205 to recruit the spider-totem of that reality, a Peter Parker who was driven to madness and grief caused by the death of the Gwen of that reality and became the Goblin; however, that Peter was killed by Verna and her Hounds. Angered, Gwen swore vengeance and warped away from that reality.[34]
On the run from Morlun, Spider-Woman found herself on Earth-41940. She was then recruited by the S.H.I.E.L.D. of Earth-41940 into the Spider-Men, a group of Spider-Man analogs assembled to combat the Multiversal Sinister Six. Morlun's failure to kill her or any of the other Spider-Men brought the Totem War to Earth-41940. She was among the Spider-Men not fond of the Superior Spider-Army's methods of with dealing the Inheritors and decided to join a rival group of spiders, Team Amazing.[35]
Spider-Woman was later present during the final fight against the Inheritors, during which the villains were finally defeated and dealt with.[36]
Return to her universe
Gwen later returned to her reality, where she still tried to turn the public opinion against her by becoming a vigilante. With the appearance of a new villain named the Vulture, Gwen set out to catch him and deliver him to the police in order to gain their trust. However, her vigilantism strained her friendship with Mary Jane Watson and the other members of her band, as well as with her father.[5] After her first fight with the Vulture ended in a humiliating defeat, Gwen learned that her father had lost jurisdiction of the manhunt for her, which had been reassigned to Frank Castle, a maverick police officer known for his brutal measures. An argument with her father was interrupted by the Vulture, who had been sent to find Spider-Woman by Murdock. Incapacitated by the Vulture's gas fumes, she was attacked by Castle, who managed to unmask her and was shocked to discover she was just a teenaged girl.[37] When a gig the Mary Janes was headlining was attacked by the Hand, Spider-Gwen broke up a fight between Black Cat and Murdock, who had taken a keen interest in making Spider-Woman his apprentice and figured out her civilian identity by watching her fight and targeting her family.[11]
Secret Wars
With the destruction of the universe, an amnesiac Gwen found herself on Earth-15513 under the assumed alias of Ms. Woodley, an employee of Ozcorp. teaming up with the Peter Porker of Earth-8311, the Anya Corazon of Earth-616, the William Braddock of Earth-833, the Pavitr Prabhakar of Earth-50101, and the Peter Parker of Earth-90214, Gwen managed to overthrow Mayor Norman Osborn and stop him from hijacking control of the Web of Life and Destiny.[38]
Web-Warriors assemble
Following the restoration of the multiverse, Gwen became a part-time member of the Web-Warriors, helping to protect dimensions that had lost their Spider-Totems to the Inheritors.[39]
Civil War
On Earth-41940, the Superhuman Registration Act was passed and then enforced by S.H.I.E.L.D. Spider-Woman was one of the heroes who opposed the act and joined the Peter Parker of Earth-32323's Secret Avengers. Their base was raided by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, with Agent Venom being shot. Remorseful, Director Fury approached Gwen with a new proposal.[35]
Unmasked
Nick Fury decided to make specialized deals with heroes, instead of forcing them to his side by force. Spider-Woman became a major proponent of Fury's plan, convincing Spider-Punk to register. She also talked to Agent Venom, persuading Thompson to forgive Fury and even join him.[35]
Return of the Lizard
Waking up late for her new job at the Dollar Dog bodega, Gwen arrived to learn it had been attacked first by the Bodega Bandit - a small-time criminal stylizing himself after 18th century highwaymen; and then by a giant lizard-monster. Hunting down the Bodega Bandit, she learned that the Lizard had eaten his dog. Unwilling to believe the Lizard had come back, Gwen realized the culprit was Dr. Curtis Connors, the only other person aware that Peter had been the original Lizard, but that Connors had vanished after Peter's death. Haunted by her failure to save Peter, Spider-Woman located the Lizard in the sewers only to discover Connors was one of many. Her fight with the Lizards was interrupted by Captain America, who informed her the monsters were property of S.H.I.E.L.D. and that she was placing her under arrest.[29]
Haunted by her past
Despite not wanting to fight Captain America - who her father idolized, Gwen was forced into a three-way battle between her and the Lizards and was knocked out. Waking up handcuffed with vibranium, Gwen was interrogated by Captain America, who accused her of being a member of the terrorist organization S.I.L.K. Noticing Dr. Connors and the other Lizards reverted to human form, Spider-Woman asked if Captain America had a cure, but was told that only a temporary suppressant existed. Devastated that this was going to be Peter's legacy, Gwen told Captain America that Peter had been the Lizard that attacked Midtown and that she didn't have a clue what S.I.L.K. was. Connors transformed back into a Lizard and attacked, but Gwen defeated him with help from Captain America and Jean DeWolff, a police friend of her father's. Deciding to give her a chance to prove her innocence, Captain America let Spider-Woman go, and Gwen later gave the Bodega Bandit her pet hamster to replace his dog.[8]
Attack of the Green Goblin
Visiting the Spider-Woman of Earth-616 using her Web-Warriors portal device for advice and to help free her from the vibranium handcuffs, Gwen asked her what her Earth-616 counterpart was like. Saying she should talk to Peter Parker, having never personally met Gwen Stacy herself, Jessica advised her to focus on being the best Gwen Stacy she can be rather than dwelling on what happened to Earth-616 Gwen and Earth-65 Peter. With Jess distracted by her pregnancy-induced hunger-cravings, Gwen returned to Earth-65 and was shocked to discover Harry Osborn - a high school friend of hers and Peter's - has returned after two years, having vanished after Peter's funeral.
Gwen was further shocked to learn that Harry blamed himself for Peter's death, having done nothing to stop Spider-Woman from killing one of his two best friends, and that he had spent his two years training as a soldier and joined S.H.I.E.L.D., later defecting to S.I.L.K. in order to take revenge.[31] Hunted by Harry as Spider-Woman, Gwen offered to surrender peacefully, but Harry - dressed in green goblin-themed powered armor and accompanied by orange and blue goblin androids - declares he's going to kill her. Gwen tried to talk Harry down, but he drank an improved batch of Lizard serum in order to gain an edge over her, knocked her out, and unmasked her, the shock of learning her identity causing him to lose control of the Lizard mutagen.[40] Regaining consciousness to see Captain America fighting the increasingly monstrous Harry, Gwen followed Harry into the sewers after Captain America was knocked out by a pumpkin bomb explosion and managed to talk him down, giving him the Lizard serum suppressant in order to reverse his mutation. Returning home, Gwen offered to tell her father the truth about how Peter died, but Captain Stacy told he'd retired from the force and for her to keep her secrets.[41]
Spider-Women
While meeting with Earth-616 Spider-Woman and Silk on Earth-65, the three were attacked by the Super-Adaptoid, discovering this was merely a distraction for someone to steal Gwen's portal device and strand them on Earth-65.[42] While Jessica told Gwen to live her life and hang out with her friends, Gwen instead followed her and saved her and Reed Richards from being ambushed by S.I.L.K. agents.[28] Discovering that the leader of S.I.L.K. was Cindy Moon's Earth-65 counterpart, with Richards' help they managed to build a portal to Earth-616. Silk and Spider-Woman managed to track Cindy-65 to Parker Industries, but were ambushed by her. With Spider-Woman and Silk outclassed by her stolen tech, Cindy-65 revealed that she had created the spider that gave Gwen her powers, derived from the genetic material of an extraterrestrial arachnid. Incapacitating Gwen, Cindy-65 injects her with a formula that removes her spider-powers.[28]
Defeated by S.I.L.K.
Returning to the Fact Channel, Gwen learned of the origin story of Jesse Drew and informed him of Cindy-65's deception. Jesse defected from S.I.L.K. and provided Gwen with radioactive isotopes derived from the DNA of the alien spiders that had bitten him, enabling her to temporarily restore her powers.[43]
Hunted by the Punisher
After enduring a brutal beat down in her powerless state from Cindy-65, Gwen realized how helpless she was without her powers.[44] Despite Captain America's support and her father issuing a public confession of how poorly the Spider-Woman investigation was handled, Gwen became depressed at the prospect of permanently losing her powers once her eight isotopes were used up. However, being powerless gave her an opportunity to reconnect with her friends. When discovered that Mr. Alby - her boss - had been forced to sell the Dollar Dog - which had been rebuilt from a bodega into a high-priced restaurant - to pay off the repairs from her fight with the Green Goblin, Gwen almost gave up being Spider-Woman forever but was stopped by the arrival of Frank Castle, who'd figured out she was Spider-Woman and attacked her. Gwen used one of the isotopes to knock him out and flee the scene.[32]
Standing against the Punisher
Gwen tried to ask her father for advice, but they were attacked by Kraven the Hunter, an associate of Castle's from when he was a member of Tony Stark's War Machine mercenaries. While the isotope injector was damaged by Kraven, George Stacy stopped Castle from exposing Gwen as Spider-Woman.[45] Gwen sought advice from Jesse Drew, who told her to take her father and run, and considered seeking refuge on Earth-616 or help from her various allies, even contemplating becoming Murdock's apprentice if it would protect her father. After receiving an inspirational speech from the Bodega Bandit - who she had stopped from robbing a burger joint while out of costume - Gwen resolved to fight and had Reed Richards repair the injector, using the last of the isotopes to fight Castle. The fight between the two caused massive amounts of collateral damage, but George Stacy and Jean DeWolfe arrived in time to stop him from killing Gwen with his War Machine gauntlet. With Gwen despairing over her inability to break the cycle of violence ruining their lives, George decided to turn himself in for aiding and abetting Spider-Woman.[46]
Deal with the Devil
When Matt Murdock approached her and offered to help her in exchange for Spider-Woman's fealty, and Gwen's help in persuading her father to work with Murdock, Gwen accepted, desperate to get legal representation for Captain Stacy.[47] Gwen was given new hope when Jessica Drew and her babysitter stopped by for Thanksgiving.[26] On Christmas Eve, Spider-Woman was attacked by the Hand ninja as a test of her skills, Murdock revealing he knew all about her power loss and offering her an unlimited supply of isotope samples. Gwen accepts, making Murdock Gwen's "only hope for being Spider-Woman".[48]
Meeting Miles Morales
When Miles Morales' father vanished from Earth-616 and was found on Earth-65, Gwen teamed up with him and discovered that Jefferson Davis' Earth-65 counterpart was S.I.L.K. field agent known as the Scorpion.[49][22] Coming across an alternate future world where they were married and had children,[50] Gwen and Miles formed a romantic connection but were forced to part ways.[51]
Venomized
With the revelation that corrupt district attorney Foggy Nelson had moved her father's trial date up, Gwen's life began to increasingly spiral out of control as her father refused to refute the charges against him, not caring that being found guilty would result in him being sent to prison and wanting to use the trial to reveal Spider-Woman's innocence. Vowing to do whatever it took to save her father, Gwen met with Murdock at Oscorp, where he and scientist Dr. Elsa Brock revealed a way Gwen could both permanently regain her powers and cure Harry Osborn: Exposing someone mutated by the Lizard serum to the radioactive spider-isotopes, both related through Cindy-65's research, would draw the mutagen out, transforming it into a black, amorphous symbiotic creature; Described as a "mutant cousin of Agent Drew's original alien parasite"[52] and "a hybrid [with] all of the abilities of Spider-Woman plus the regenerative power of the Lizard".[6]
Agreeing to Murdock's plan for the sake of helping Harry, Gwen travelled to Madripoor with a squad of Hand ninja.[52] Gwen's meeting with Harry was interrupted by the arrival of Logan and Shadowcat, a pair of ruthless bounty-hunters sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture Harry. Harry convinced Gwen to renege on her agreement with Murdock, and she turned on the Hand ninja sent to assist her.[53] Growing increasingly desperate as Harry's condition degenerated, Gwen called Murdock, who berated her for going back on their deal, but she refused to take Harry to the Hand, realizing that she'd unwittingly fallen into Murdock's trap.[54] When Harry fully transformed into the Lizard, Gwen teamed up with Shadowcat and Logan, using her isotopes to turn the Lizard serum in Harry's veins into Venom. The symbiote first bonded with Logan, whose healing factor made him immune to the radiation. Gwen and Shadowcat were able to work together to phase and separate him from Venom. The symbiote subsequently bonded to Gwen but, when Murdock arrived to gloat, Gwen stole his smartphone and played music in order to keep it under control. When she attacked him, Murdock revealed he'd stolen her portal device and revealed that her prolonged disappearance had let the Rhino beat her father into a coma. Enraged, Gwen gave in to the symbiote and swore revenge.[55][6]
Bonded to the Venom Symbiote
Hunting down the Rhino as Venom, Gwen became increasingly aggressive and violent as the symbiote's influence over her grew. Otomo, Murdock's second-in-command, informed her of the Rhino's location, and "Gwenom" confronted him and Murdock, swearing to come for the Kingpin after she was done with the man who hurt her father. As she fought the Rhino, Gwen noticed police officers filming her and realized that it was a setup to discredit her father and reaffirm the notion that she was a criminal, but her desire for vengeance outweighed any misgivings over her actions, so Gwen kept fighting. Before Gwenom could strike a finishing blow on the Rhino, the Punisher intervened and separated her from the symbiote using a sonic baton before killing the Rhino himself using his War Machine gauntlet. Enraged that her vengeance was stolen from her, Gwen rebonded to the symbiote and was subsequently framed for the Rhino's murder, renewing the manhunt against her.[56]
After brutally attacking and nearly killing the Bodega Bandit, Gwen solicited Reed Richard's help in infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s maximum-security prison to ask Cindy Moon for her help with controlling Venom, and to confront her over why she'd set the mutant spider that had bitten her loose. Cindy revealed that despite wanting power more than anything, she hadn't used the mutant spider on herself out of fear of failure. Cindy reveals that Gwen's dark thoughts, anger, and thus her quest for vengeance, are not the result of Venom but were her own. Cindy challenged Gwen to let go of her rage and hatred towards Murdock, saying that seeking revenge would only play into his hands. However, Gwen's determination to take the Kingpin down was only renewed after seeing that Felicia Hardy had been thrown into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s maximum-security prison as a result of her attack on Murdock, the former Black Cat despairing that Murdock had won and anyone and anything not already under his control soon would be.[21]
Hunting down the corrupt cop responsible for letting the Rhino into her father's cell, Venom was about to kill him but was confronted by the Punisher. Rejecting his offer of an alliance to take down Murdock, she offered the cop a chance to redeem himself by turning himself in, and later approached Ben Parker and unmasked herself.[57]
Gwen would soon reveal her dual identities to May and the Mary Janes as well, professing her guilt in hiding her life from Spider-Woman from them for so long. Gwen's bandmates were shaken yet supportive, but Ben emboldened Gwen to continue on with her plan of vengeance against Murdock. As Em Jay, Betty, and Glory were berating Ben, Castle contacted Gwen who then snuck out in the midst of the fight.[58]
Gwen zipped onto the roof of Murdock's building, where a bloody, disheveled Castle was aiming his War Machine gauntlet towards Murdock. Gwen threw Murdock into the air with a webline, causing Castle to miss, but as Castle fired another blast while Gwen belittled him for descending into violence Captain America rushed in and disarmed and incapacitated Castle. Cap attempted to console Gwen, promising Gwen that Murdock "will see justice". Recalling her own experiences with the police, as well as Murdock's sway over the courts and justice system, Gwen turns on Cap, rallying that Murdock "owns both sides of the law. He is your justice." Gwen overpowers Cap, breaks her arm, and knocks her out.
Gwen dangled Murdock over the edge of the building, prepared to kill him, but when Murdock finally revealed his obsession with her—a long test to see whether or not she can be corrupted by power, just like he was—Gwen could no longer go through with killing him. As Murdock taunted Gwen, her teleportation device worn by Murdock on his wrist began beeping insistently before a portal opened from it and sucked Gwen into an alternate dimension, her presence giving rise to a new timeline called Earth-617.[59]
Gwen almost immediately encountered the Gwen Stacy of that reality, who initially presumed Gwen-65 to be a clone. Frustrated with the overwhelming time pressure, and not wanting to deal with Gwen-617's problems, Gwen walked out on her counterpart, but not before Gwen-617 heard Gwen referring to herself as "we." Upon learning that Gwen-617's father had been killed and seeing how she was coping with her loss, Gwen-65 came to the realization that at least her own father was still alive and that she should have stayed with him instead of giving into her rage.[19]
Gwen Stacy meets Gwen Stacy
Gwen-617 used Empire State University's supercomputer to locate a weak spot between dimensions, taking Gwen-65 to the Avengers manor to get it checked by Tony Stark and Hank Pym. Using a device engineered by Stark, the two Gwens located a weak spot near the George Washington Bridge - Gwen-65 noting the irony. Saying farewell, Gwen-65 promised to Gwen-617 that she'd never forget how lucky she was to still have her father, and leapt off the bridge to return home.[20]
The Trial of Spider-Gwen
After returning to Earth-65, Gwen approached J. Jonah Jameson and revealed the truth to him, unmasking herself.[20] Contacting her friends, Gwen reveals to them how when she inputs anger, fear, and pain into Venom it becomes "too much and it's like a dam bursts". Gwen concludes that "if the Venom gives me back ten times what I put in, maybe it's time I think more about what I give." With the help of Reed Richards and the Mary Janes, Gwen forms a plan to take down Murdock and take back her web-watch.
Confronting Murdock, who had been deemed a liability by the Hand, using a band recording of the Mary Janes played through technology adapted by Reed. The sound crippled Murdock while it strongly affected the Venom symbiote. Gwen declared herself free of his machinations, achieving a balance with Venom which transformed into a replica of her old costume. Retrieving her dimensional portal watch, she left him to face the Hand by himself when he rejected her offer of redemption.
Meeting with Detective Jean DeWolff, Gwen allowed herself to be arrested, desiring to atone for her crimes.[60] Gwen was assigned Jennifer Walters as an attorney, being told that she wasn't on trial for anything she had done but everything Spider-Woman could do. Despite the efforts of DA Foggy Nelson to get the case thrown out, Gwen was convicted by the jury and sentenced to one year in a maximum security S.H.I.E.L.D. prison. Despairing that her sentence had been so lenient despite all the damage she'd caused, Gwen allowed herself to be brutally beaten up by the other inmates and psychologically tormented by the Vulture, who had established himself at the top of the prison's hierarchy. Gwen rejected an offer by Captain America to let her out of prison if she joined a black-ops team consisting of potential assets like Black Cat, Silk, Kitty Pryde, Logan, and the Punisher; stating she needed to be held fully accountable for her actions as Spider-Woman.[61]
The end of Spider-Woman
After a year in prison, Gwen was released and reunited with the Mary Janes; initially vetoing Betty Brant's suggestion that the band go on tour and use that as an excuse for Spider-Gwen to help people in places outside New York. Learning that her father had awakened from his coma and was undergoing rehab, Gwen and George discussed their respective second chances while en route to the Dollar Dog; Gwen telling her father that what had happened to her wasn't his fault and that she wanted to find a way of helping people that didn't involve violence, and George assuring her that no matter what the future held in store for them he had her back. When a fire truck went past the diner, Gwen bid her father farewell and left to assist the firefighters in evacuating a burning apartment building.[4]
Spider-Geddon
When the Superior Octopus used the cloning technology of the Inheritors and merged with the New U Technology in order to make himself immortal, the Web-Warriors decided to reassemble the Spider-Army in order to stop him, fearing the Inheritors would hack it and return.[62] Because they were sending Spider-Bots, their fears would prove to be true, has they would have the technology to do it.[63] Before that, Spider-Gwen was approached by Spider-Ham and she joined with the rest of the Spider-Army, who lastly recruited Miles Morales. When they arrived at Otto's lair, it was already to late, and she witnessed as the Spider-Noir killed himself and Spider-UK's life energy was absorbed by the Inheritors.[64]
Verna then got her hands on Gwen's Dimensional Travel Watch and sent her to another dimension.[65] There she met an alternate version of herself who became that world's Green Goblin. Peter and Mary Jane explained what happened and that Harry Osborn was that world's Spider-Man. It's also revealed that world's Gwen Stacy was working on a project to make Harry travel between dimensions with his Spider-Powers, showing she could help Spider-Gwen return to her friends. In the end, the Goblin was cured of her insanity and helped develop the Ticket to the Multiverse, which would allow her counterpart to travel through the Multiverse.[66]
Gwen vs. Gwen
Instead of just going straight back to San Francisco, Gwen decided to recruit as many spider-totems as she could, including the mainstream Spider-Man.[67] She arrived at the Transamerica Pyramid just in time to see Miles, now with the power of the Enigma Force, fight with the now revived father of the Inheritors, Solus. Peter commanded the Spider-Army to obey Otto's orders, which meant Miles killing Solus with the Sword Vigor. After he was slain and the rest defeated, they created new clone baby bodies to the Inheritors, without their memory and free of their hunger, whom were adopted by Spider-Ma'am. With the Web of Life and Destiny now destroyed, Gwen was the only one who could travel through the Multiverse.[68] Gwen would later venture to Earth-90214 and Earth-803 to inform of Spider-Noir and Spider-UK's deaths to their relatives and friends.[69]
Outlawed and Exiled
After Gwen began attending Earth-616's ESU, she informed Peter about the Jackal having followed her and wanting to kidnap her. Peter then told Gwen about C.R.A.D.L.E., and the Underage Superhuman Welfare Act, which outlawed every superhero under the age of 21, following an accident with the Champions. This news infuriated Gwen, who was totally against the idea, and refused Peter's proposal to remain in her home reality and skip school for the time being.[70]
Targeted by Jackal
After talking to her father and to the Bodega Bandit, Gwen teamed up with Sue Storm and Johnny Storm to disrupt Man-Wolf's gang activity.[71] The next day when she faced the duo, they demanded that she leave New York, since they were now the new rulers. After she refused, Sue tried to kill her, much to Johnny's dismay, but Gwen's symbiote allowed her to fight back. Despite her best efforts, she was blackmailed by the Storms into leaving for good, and after bidding her father goodbye, went into self exile in the Prime Marvel Universe.[72]
Order of the Web
Now living in the 616 reality, upon Julia Carpenter's warning an unknown force brought Spider-Man (Peter) into conflict with Sin-Eater, Gwen told him that she didn't really how her counterpart would think about Norman Osborn.[73] After Peter left and continued on to save Norman from Sin-Eater, Gwen became a founding member of the Order of the Web with the other spider heroes to save Peter from Norman, after the temporary abatement of Sin-Eater.[74] While escaping, Norman antagonised Peter about Gwen which caused him to lose his cool, and tossed Norman out for Sin-Eater as they escaped.[75] From Peter's sacrifice of Norman sealing a deal with Kindred, Gwen and the Order were possessed in consequence by a demon sent by Kindred to destroy Peter, pursuing the veteran Spider-Man to the Sanctum Sanctorum.[76]
Gwen names the Order
Under the control of Kindred, the Order began wrecking havoc across the city and even battling the New Warriors.[77] Arriving at the Brooklyn Bridge they attacked innocent bystanders and were also harming themselves, as Ghost-Spider threw Miles out of the bridge in order for Kindred to taunt Peter even more, forcing Peter to made a deal with the demon. Kindred accepted the deal and released the spider heroes from his control.[78] The confused heroes were then met by Doctor Strange and Black Cat, and the sorcerer explained that they needed to collaborate in order to help Peter and they all went to the Astral Plane, leaving Black Cat behind.[79]
Gwenom vs MJarnage
When the dark elder god Knull - creator of the Prime Marvel Universe's symbiotes - attacked Earth, Gwen found her symbiote - one of the few outside of Knull's ability to control - being adversely affected by their bloodlust, causing it to slowly transform into its Venomized form. Unable to save her roommates from being taken over during a fight with a symbiote dragon and worried about what would happen if her symbiote came into contact with one of the Prime Marvel Universe's, she attempted to return to Earth-65 using her Ticket to the Multiverse. At that exact moment on Earth-65, the Jackal bonded a sample of Gwen's symbiote to Mary Jane, which caused her to be teleported to the Prime Marvel Universe through their shared symbiote. Gwen caught MJ, but before either could process what had just occurred they landed in a pool of living abyss. MJ was taken over by a symbiote that merged with the portion of Gwen's artificial symbiote and was dubbed Carnage by Knull, who commanded her to kill Gwen and bring him her artificial symbiote.[80]
Symbiote vs. Symbiote
Transforming into her Venom form, Gwen attempted to warn MJ that the gestalt symbiote would kill her, but MJ refused to listen to Gwen's attempts to reason with her, berating her for having abandoned her and their friends, and accusing her of wanting to be the only superpowered member of their group. Carnage knocked Ghost-Spider into a pool of living abyss and Gwen was pulled into the Symbiote Hive-Mind by Knull, who informed her that MJ had willingly sworn fealty to him in exchange for power and mocked her for having obliviously pushed MJ away. Refusing Knull's order for her to submit to his will, Gwen refused to let Knull have her friend, the dark god accepting her challenge. Gwen pursued Carnage, stopping her from harming civilians and challenging her to a battle of the bands. The soundwaves destabilized Carnage's gestalt symbiote, enabling Gwen to reassert control over the portion of her symbiote bonded to MJ and seemingly kill the living abyss bonded to MJ. With MJ passing out from radiation sickness, Gwen vowed to keep her safe and find a way to return them both home - not noticing that part of the Carnage symbiote remained bonded to her.[81]
Into the Gwenverse
At some point, Gwen and MJ returned to Earth-65, where Gwen resolved the situation with the Storm twins, rescued her friends from the Jackal, and resumed her duties as a superhero and member of the Mary Janes. While struggling to repair her damaged reputation as a superhero and relationship with MJ and her father, Gwen was abruptly struck by a pulse of temporal energy while attempting to use the Ticket to the Multiverse and fell through a multiversal portal. Gwen was rescued by Spider-Zero, the Master Weaver of the Web of Life and Destiny, and they returned to find Earth-65 had been overwritten to a dystopian futuristic society. Taken aback by MJ being openly flirtatious and friendly with her and having forgotten her secret identity, Gwen and Spider-Zero fled from a police mech and sought refuge in a library, where Spider-Zero revealed that the pulse had split Gwen's essence into five alternate versions of herself who had obtained the powers of Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel.
Gwen and her variants
Attacked by the police mech, which was piloted by her own father, Gwen was rescued by Spider-Zero and taken to Loomworld, where she was informed that Earth-65 had been rewritten from some point in the future and that in order to restore it she had to gather the alternate versions of herself and recombine with them before the changes to the timeline became permanent. Gwen was sent to 800 CE to find the variant of herself who had obtained the powers of Thor, Thorgwen. Worried that Thorgwen's existence would result in the appearance of more dangerous supervillains, gods, and cosmic entities, Ghost-Spider attacked her and tried to steal Mjolnir, being mistaken for Loki. As Thorgwen exposited her backstory and blasted her with a bolt of lightning, Ghost-Spider realized that Thorgwen embodied her attention-seeking side.[82] Gwen was able to talk her Thor counterpart down from a fight by exploiting her self-absorbed nature, persuading Thorgwen to accompany her to the mid-20th century, where they encountered Gwen Rogers -- aka Captain America. Gwen's attempt to befriend the prudish embodiment of her desire to do good was disrupted by Gwen Howlett, aka Wolverine, the embodiment of her unrestrained fiery temper and rage. A fight between the four Gwens broke out, but was interrupted when Finale's Terminal Six attacked attempting to kill them.[10] Taken to Loomworld by Spider-Zero, the four Gwens set out to recruit Toni Stacy, aka Iron Gwen, the embodiment of Gwen's love for science fiction and anime. Another fight with the Terminal Six ensued where Norman Osborn was revealed to have become a Human/Skrull hybrid after accidentally having been scarred by Wolverine in the past, attempting to kill Toni in a fit of rage. Badly wounding him in self-defense, Toni reluctantly agreed to accompany the other Gwens after being disowned by Howard Stark.[7]
Shadow Clones
Gwen would eventually get a part-time job at a smoothie shack, where she met Mateo, a guy she had a crush on. Ghost-Spider would later fight the Sinister Six of Earth-616, who attacked Gwen on her dimension before she successfully sent them back to their universe. She then came across a version of Doc Ock while on patrol, but quickly realized that the villain was actually another Gwen Stacy. After an investigation led by Reed Richards, they found out that the villain was a clone of Gwen Stacy.[83] They would soon be attacked by a version of Gwen that was made of sand, who the other two Gwens quickly freed from her control device.[84]
Gwen and her clones
After threeotherversions of Gwen, who resembled the Vulture, Rhino, and Kraven respectively, held Reed Richards hostage, Gwen and the other two clones went to rescue him but in the process were captured by Lyla Bennett, who revealed herself to be the person behind all the Gwen clones.[85] Bennett planned to activate a machine that would kill every version of Gwen Stacy in the multiverse as revenge for the death of her husband Lee, who accidentally died in the middle of the fight Gwen had with the Sinister Six.[86] Ghost-Spider was soon rescued by Sandgwen and Gwen Ock, with the latter sacrificing herself to destroy the machine and save the other Gwens. After freeing the clones from their control devices, they each left Ghost-Spider to find their own path in life.[87]
Smash
During a performance, Gwen saved Em-Jay from being assassinated by a would-be supervillain, though in doing so she inadvertently ruined the gig, leading to Em Jay upbraiding her. Gwen confided in her father that she felt like she no longer belonged on Earth-65 and that the Mary Janes were the only thing keeping her anchored there. Not long afterwards, Gwen learned that the Mary Janes had been asked to front for the new rock band Uncut Gems, headed by Dazzler (Alison Blaire), and Em Jay offered to reinstate her as the band's drummer on the condition that she not get up to any superheroics. However, it soon transpired that the offer had been a ploy by the Uncut Gems' manager, super-spy Natasha Romanoff, to get Ghost-Spider to serve as a bodyguard to Alison, who was being targeted by supervillains like the Hulk. Learning that Natasha had dealt with the Storm siblings behind the scenes, thereby having enabled her to return to Earth-65 without issue, and was aware of her activities throughout the Multiverse, Gwen agreed to protect Alison, infuriating Em Jay in the process--though Alison attempted to smooth things over by asking her to replace Rick Jones as the Uncut Gems' guitarist for the duration of the tour. When Pixie, a former friend of Alison's, attacked during the Uncut Gems' next performance, Gwen intervened but was buried under debris.[88]
Team-Up with Dazzler
Not long after, Em Jay and Alison were both captured by the Hulk--a transformed Rick Jones--and Pixie; Gwen discovering that the person targeting Alison was mad scientist Bruce Banner--who had kidnapped and brainwashed Alison's friends and sister to isolate her.[89] Banner revitalized the remnants of the Carnage symbiote inside Em Jay and Carnage attacked Gwen, berating her for being oblivious to Em Jay's feelings for her. However, with the help of Banner's benevolent Hulk persona, the Carnage symbiote was subdued and the Mary Janes finished the tour.[90]
Unfortunately, the Carnage symbiote remained bonded to Em Jay and began taking over her and attacking Gwen whenever she got angry, costing the Mary Janes several gigs. While Gwen was comforting Em Jay, Orlando Octavius approached them and claimed ownership of the Carnage symbiote due to having financed Dr. Banner's gamma research, attempting to abduct Em Jay. Stopping Carnage from killing him, Gwen reached out to Natasha for help but was incapacitated by Carnage, who took her phone for a private conversation. To Gwen's surprise, following this Carnage attempted to ditch her, fed up with her obliviousness to Em Jay's feelings. Their altercation was interrupted by Mortis, Alison's long-lost sister who'd been hired to capture Carnage by Octavius. With Carnage injured by Mortis' energy blasts, Gwen attempted to carry Em Jay to safety before they were attacked by Mysterio, who was also working for Octavius. Easily defeating him, Carnage took Gwen to where Natasha was waiting with a helicopter, and Gwen was devastated to learn that Em Jay had agreed to join Natasha's super-spy agency in order to learn how to work together with her symbiote. With Em Jay confessing her feelings and saying they would talk once she returned, Gwen was left with no ties remaining to her home dimension.[91]
Spider-Society
Sometime later, Gwen would be recruited by either Miguel O'Hara of Earth-2099 or Anya Corazon of Earth-616 to join the Spider-Society which she would accept.[92]
Relocation to Earth-616
Following this, Gwen was faced by King Loki from an alternate universe who wished to claim an artifact from her reality that would allow him to reset reality. She raced against him to the artifact, which turned out to be a Cosmic Cube, and against all odds she was successful in reaching to it first. This caused the Cosmic Cube to merge with her,[93] and now the new target of King Loki Gwen was forced to leave Earth-65, being rescued by Orobourous of the Time Variance Authority.[94] Relocated to Earth-616 under the alias Lisa Rogers, Gwen was instructed to lay low, not fight crime, and not let any of her allies know she had returned. Drawn into action to thwart a bank robbery, Gwen revealed her presence to Peter Parker, Julia Carpenter, and Miles Morales in the process and was chastised by O.B. for having done so.[16]
Ghost-Spider finds a new home
Despite being warned by O.B. not to use her symbiote to fight crime, Gwen got into a fight with Kraven the Hunter, who drugged her and threw her off the George Washington Bridge to drown.[16] Personality
Even when you're not wearing a mask, you're still a super hero. You're still on the outside. You don't get to be normal. All you get to be is special. Forever.
—Spider-Woman[source]
Gwen is a free-spirited individual with artistic inclinations, traits of which would put her at odds with the types of ethics her father tried to instill. She has an interest in music, hence her role as a drummer in the Mary Janes, and a love for corn dogs. Like her father, Gwen possesses a strong sense of justice and is a natural detective, both of which catered well to her decision to become a superhero after receiving her powers.
In her earlier adventures, Gwen relished in the attention as Spider-Woman, opting to exploit and maintain it rather than use her abilities altruistically; however, her behavior changed when her father expressed his belief that Spider-Woman could easily help people.[30] After Peter Parker, who had mutated into the Lizard, died in a fight against her, Gwen harbored an immense amount of guilt, and her being blamed by the public for his death only served to worsen it greatly. Regardless, she had a strong enough will to continue being Spider-Woman, no matter how much enmity much of the world had for her.[32]
Unfortunately, Gwen's protective nature has given way to desperation and vengeance at times, as she had been prompted her to commit terrible actions or at least consider them. Most notably her response to her powers diminishing and the mounting charges against her father, when she entered a deal with the Matt Murdock of her dimension, which led to a series of disastrous events, including her union with the symbiote and her intentions to kill Murdock for his transgressions.[47][57]
At the end of the day, Gwen is willing to take responsibility for her actions and recklessness. This is shown after she spared Murdock, in which she revealed her identity and turned herself into the authorities, as well as accepting her conviction and a one-year sentencing to a S.H.I.E.L.D. prison.[20][60] She even declined Captain America's offer to join a task force as recompense for her sentencing, opting to carry out her sentence and endure the abuses she faced in prison.[61]
After her release from prison, Gwen had struggled to balance her civilian and superhero lives. She realized it was foolish of her to expect to return to a normal life, and lamented the fact that she no longer had a secret identity, but struggled onward as best she could.[60] Upon realizing she could carry out a normal life in the Prime Marvel Universe, she decided to enroll in the ESU located there and came to enjoy the lifestyle split between there and her own dimension. When coming to terms with her present circumstances, she decided to rebrand her superhero identity after something Miles Morales had said to her when he first saw she had survived their latest encounter with the Inheritors,[68] "Ghost-Spider," believing that "death follows [her]."[3]
After bonding with the symbiote, Gwen initially regretted becoming host to it. Noticing that since bonding with it she became much more aggressive and violent. She had also become wary of it's behavior, such as dispensing "gummy spiders" she is not controlling, the frequent headaches, and occasional blackouts. However, she also acknowledges that it is a living creature that is her responsibility, and she has taken it upon herself to show it a better path alternative to the more destructive nature its inclined to.[4][95]
Reputation
Initially, Gwen's reputation as Spider-Woman was favorable. However, after Peter Parker died fighting her as the Lizard, the public largely blamed her for his death, and the NYPD and S.H.I.E.L.D. sought her capture. In the NYPD, some had even considered Spider-Woman to be more of a dangerous animal to be put down than a criminal.[52] Unsurprisingly, the John Jonah Jameson of her dimension had largely opposed her and branded her a menace, which had pedigree due to the concurrent warrant for her arrest.[8][32]
After revealing her identity and finishing her prison sentence. The public's reception of her had improved considerably,[4] with J.J. Jameson even publicly welcoming her back to the city on television (though it was most likely to improve his own reputation).[96] As of now, she is currently able to work closely with most forms of authority in New York, particularly the NYPD, as the officers now know of her relations to Captain Stacy.[95] However, some people still harbor resentment towards her, as shown when told to leave a restaurant when on a date with Harry, and Gwen herself struggled to deal with the attention she was getting.[97]
Ultimately, Gwen later decides to go to Earth-616 to attend the ESU located there. As the newly dubbed "Ghost-Spider," she was received warmly there as a partner of Spider-Man, but at the same time, the public does not know her identity.[3][15]
Relationships
Peter Parker of Earth-616, having been in a relationship with his own dimension's Gwen Stacy and deeply affected by her death, was shocked to see Gwen among the many Spider people recruited to fight the Inheritors.[33] Initially, Peter refused to endanger Gwen in any way,[98] but they eventually compromised as the conflict with the Inheritors escalated, promising to look out for each other.[99] Following the Inheritors' defeat, Gwen and Peter have a platonic relationship and the latter welcomed Gwen to his dimension when she decided to enroll in the ESU there.[3]
Gwen had developed romantic feelings for Miles Morales, which were reciprocated by the latter. When traveling to multiple dimensions, Gwen had discovered Earth-8, a dimension in which versions of herself and Miles were happily married and with two kids, who both possess abilities similar to their parents. Unfortunately, the two were eventually forced to part ways and returned to their own dimensions.[51] Gwen had also went on to date the Harry Osborn of her dimension some time after mourning the Spiders who were killed during the Spider-Geddon event. However, Gwen quickly found herself to be reluctant to go any further with it, as she had realized how no longer having a secret identity hurt her chances at having a normal life, as well as endangered those around her.[100]
Upon learning of Em Jay's feelings for her, Gwen admitted to caring for Em Jay.[90] However, events with the Carnage symbiote prevented Gwen from confirming if she might have been attracted to Em Jay or not.[91] AttributesPower Grid[109] Powers Venom Symbiote: Gwen lost her powers as a result of Cindy Moon depowering her with her Power Glove,[28] but exhibits similar capabilities as a result of having bonded to the Venom symbiote.[6] Superhuman Strength: The symbiote enhances Gwen's strength and allows her to lift roughly 10 tons.[2] Superhuman Durability: The symbiote enhances Gwen's durability to superhuman levels.[2] Superhuman Agility: The symbiote enhances Gwen's agility to superhuman levels.[2] Wallcrawling: The symbiote allows Gwen to cling to most surfaces.[2] Spider-Sense: The symbiote grants Gwen a spider-sense that warns her of incoming danger.[2] Camouflage: The symbiote can mimic other clothes and camouflage her appearance.[2] Constituent-Matter Generation: The symbiote can generate ensnaring tendrils and organic webbing.[2] Healing Factor: The symbiote can heal Gwen's injuries.[2] Spiders Control: Gwen can control the spider-like creatures that make up her costume and use them like semi-autonomous scouts.[2] Bioelectricity: While being held captive, Gwen developed a new power, that being the property to produce electricity like Miles.[101] Former Powers Abilities

Former Equipment Notes This Gwen Stacy's reality was originally Earth-14211, but it was changed to Earth-65 in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #9.[103] The number 65 is notable because the original Gwen Stacy was first introduced in the year 1965.[104] Trivia Despite being introduced somewhat recently, this version of Gwen Stacy became very popular among the fans with some even demanding for her own series. She eventually got one starting with Spider-Gwen. Gwen is not an Eminem fan.[105] Gwen is "sick with the burns and bad at puns."[29] A hallucination of Spider-Ham sometimes provides her inner dialogue.[29] Spider-Gwen was voiced by Reba Buhr in Spider-Geddon: Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider. Since her inception, Gwen's full given name has repeatedly been spelled "Gwendolyn" by her creator, Jason Latour, as well as most subsequent writers; however, after being given erroneous information by a fan, Seanan McGuire suggested "Gwendolyn" was a typo and her name should instead be spelled "Gwendolyne," spelling it as such in Ghost-Spider despite the fact that at that point it had never appeared in any Marvel publication as such.[106] When this was pointed out, Seanan McGuire replied that the change in how Gwen's full name was spelled was "most likely" due to "[different] spelling conventions [or] different copy-editors."[107] Gwen has been variously drawn as having short messy hair with no accessories and long hair with a black headband - identical to her Earth-616 counterpart's. The Sue Storm of Gwen's reality used to be Gwen's hero.[17] Gwen follows Sue's shared social network account with her brother Johnny.[71] Gwen has a separate social media account for her Ghost-Spider identity.[71] Stacy was seventeen when she became Spider-Woman.[72] Gwen was capable of lifting the Mjolnir of Thorgwen's reality. It is presumed, but unknown if that version of the hammer had the worthiness enchantment.[82] See Also 217 appearance(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 9 appearance(s) in handbook(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 41 minor appearance(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 16 mention(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 2 mention(s) in handbook(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 972 image(s) of Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 73 quotation(s) by or about Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 9 victim(s) killed by Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) 4 item(s) used/owned by Gwendolyn Stacy (Earth-65) Links and References Gwendolyn Stacy on Marvel.com Gwendolyn Stacy on Wikipedia.org References All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe #1 King in Black Handbook #1 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #10 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #34 Spider-Gwen #1 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #24 Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #3 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #2 Spider-Gwen #2 Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #2 Spider-Gwen #5 Clone Conspiracy #1 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #3 All-New Wolverine Annual #1 Ghost-Spider #1 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #1 Ghost-Spider #7 Ghost-Spider Annual #1 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #30 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #31 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #26 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #16 Spider-Verse (Vol. 2) #1 TVA #1 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #4 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #14 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #50.LR Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #8 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #1 Edge of Spider-Verse #2 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #3 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #9 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #9 Spider-Verse Team-Up #2 Spider-Man Unlimited Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #14 Spider-Gwen #3 Spider-Verse (Vol. 2) #5 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 4) #1 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #4–5 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #6 Spider-Women Alpha #1 Spider-Woman (Vol. 6) #7 Spider-Women Omega #1 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #10 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #11–12 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #12 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #15 Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #12 Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #14 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #18 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #19 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #20 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #21 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #22 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #25 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #27 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #28 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #29 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #32 Spider-Gwen (Vol. 2) #33 Spider-Geddon #0 Edge of Spider-Geddon #1 Spider-Geddon #1 Spider-Geddon #2 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #1–3 Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #313 Spider-Geddon #5 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #4 Ghost-Spider #8 Ghost-Spider #9 Ghost-Spider #10 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #48 Amazing Spider-Man: The Sins of Norman Osborn #1 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #49 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #50 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #51.LR Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #52 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #52.LR King in Black: Gwenom vs. Carnage #1 King in Black: Gwenom vs. Carnage #2–3 Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1 Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #1 Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #2 Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #3 Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #4 Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #5 Spider-Gwen: Smash #2 Spider-Gwen: Smash #3 Spider-Gwen: Smash #4 Giant-Size Spider-Gwen #1 Edge of Spider-Verse (Vol. 4) #4 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #11 Web of Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #1 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #7 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #6 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #6–7 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #10 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #11 Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #7–8 Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #3 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #15 Feldman, Steffi (12 February 2019) 5 Easter Eggs from Earth-65, Home of Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider Marvel.com. —Gwen Stacy[source]
Gwen Stacy was a classmate of Peter Parker while they were undergraduates at Empire State University. Initially, Peter's problems as Spider-Man made him ignore her advances, and in return, she felt insulted by his aloofness.[9] Gradually, however, a romance developed. Gwen, a science major, seemed to appreciate Peter's intellectual personality, different from that of jocks like Flash Thompson and preppies like Harry Osborn. She was Peter Parker's first true love.
Eventually, Gwen was kidnapped and killed by the Green Goblin during a confront with Spider-Man.[5] Her death deeply affected Peter for years to come and also served as the catalyst for Peter's relationship with Mary Jane.[10] She was later resurrected and had adamantium grafted to her bones, being trained by Weapon X to become one of their assassins known as X-31. During her return, she also impersonated her "doppelganger" Gwendolyn Poole, known as "Gwenpool".[3]

Gwen's first appearance
Gwen was the daughter of NYPD captain George Stacy and Helen Stacy. As a teenager, she attended Standard High, a rival school to Midtown High.[11] In school Gwen met and befriended fellow student Harry Osborn, becoming best of friends. She also entered a relationship with football player Darius LeClerc.[12] Gwen decided decided to run for school president, being assisted by Harry and Darius, but soon her father was accused of corruption. She investigated the case to clear her father's name, only to discover that Darius' father Robert had been collaborating with the Crime Master, leading to his death. Although Darius didn't blame Gwen for his father's death, they still broke up.[13]
When Peter's Aunt May lay sick, Peter gave everyone the cold shoulder, including new classmates Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy.[9] As a result, Peter began to get snubbed by Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn for being anti-social.[14] Gwen later attended a space exhibit where Peter was also in attendance. Gwen became frustrated when Peter only noticed the exhibits and remained completely oblivious to her presence. When the criminal known as the Looter showed up to steal a meteor, Spider-Man arrived to prevent it. Peter attempted to try and talk to Gwen, but she wrote him off as a coward for running when the villain showed up.[15]
Over time, Gwen started to see Peter in a positive light, admiring his strength and courage.[16] When Peter went to school on his bike, Gwen noticed his new ride and mentioned it. As he told her that she's got a lot to learn about him, they both really noticed each other for the first time.[17] At Empire State University, Gwen invited Peter to a party at her house on Sunday, but he declined so as to meet his neighbor's niece, Mary Jane Watson.[18] Gwen and her friends later learn that Flash Thompson has been drafted for the war.[19]
Gwen met up with Peter, Harry and Flash at a local café. While talking about Flash being drafted, Mary Jane walked in and the boys were stunned. They became even more surprised when Peter revealed that he knew her and Gwen became jealous when Peter and Mary Jane left together.[20] Gwen and her friends planned a going away party for Flash Thompson before he left for the armed forces to fight in Vietnam.[21] She also visited an unwell Peter Parker.[22] Gwen started to notice Peter's depression over his Aunt's illness, which started to affect his grades.[23] With Gwen and her friends' help, Peter was made to feel better about his life.[24] Flash Thompson returned home on furlough from the war, meeting with the gang: Harry Osborn, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane Watson.[25]
Peter asked Gwen to accompany him to a science symposium with Professor Warren. At the symposium, Doctor Octopus attacked and stole a device called a "nullifier", a device designed as missile defense. Spider-Man tried to stop him, leaving Gwen on her own feeling abandoned by her date.[26] Peter visited Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, where both competed for a date with him, but he left them both to check on his Aunt May.[27] Gwen and her friends all got together at the Coffee Bean Barn.[28] Peter and Mary Jane went to his Aunt May's House to assess the damage done by the attack by Dr. Octopus, where they were joined by Gwen.[29] Suddenly, Peter went missing, causing Gwen and all his friends and family to worry.[30]
Spider-Man
Once Peter returned, he, Gwen, and the rest of their friends met up and decide to go and check out a nightclub where Mary Jane had taken up a job as a go-go dancer. However, the club was a criminal front where Dr. Winkler's brainwashing techniques were being utilized to further a criminal organization. They gave Mary Jane a special camera that briefly puts people under their control, forcing them to go in back and get legitimately brainwashed. When this was done to Captain George Stacy, Gwen began to worry about her father when he didn't return from getting fresh air. Peter, also finding it suspicious, decided to go look for him but as Spider-Man.
Spider-Man went in back and caught Winkler in the process of brainwashing George Stacy, but before Spider-Man could stop him, he was grabbed by Winkler's employer: Kingpin.[31] Once Kingpin completed the brainwashing, he let Stacy go. Stacy met up with Gwen and Harry, who were being told by Mary Jane about Spider-Man's appearance at the club; George attempted to alleviate any concern they had about what happened. When Peter later tried to confront George as Peter Parker, Stacy attacked him, forcing Peter to defend himself. Gwen walked in on the situation, and her father accused Peter of going mad and attacking him. Gwen refused to listen to anything Peter said and demanded that he leave.[32]
When Gwen Stacy confronted her father about his involvement in the attempted theft of top-secret plans, his brainwashing wore off and he told her the truth of what happened. With George wanted by the police and slated to be killed by the Kingpin's men, they decided to try and flee the city. Peter (having deduced they may be in trouble from the Kingpin's men) came to their rescue but arrived to find their home full of the Kingpin's goons. When Spidey defeated them, he found that they had also been brainwashed and were useless for getting any more information from Kingpin. Peter developed a special gas mask to protect him from the Kingpin's gases and began searching for any clue to the Kingpin's hideout, but the Kingpin's men managed to stop Gwen and George at the airport.
Then, they were taken back to Osborn Industries, and were about to be killed by a giant vat of a boiling hot chemical. This was interrupted by the arrival of both Norman Osborn and Spider-Man. The two fought off the Kingpin and his goons, and while Winkler was killed, the Kingpin escaped. Spider-Man saved Gwen and George from a painful death. Afterwards, the true story came out and with Osborn's corroboration of the events, George Stacy's name was cleared of any wrongdoing.[33] Peter Parker tried to patch things up with Gwen, to no avail.[34][35]
Gwen was told by her father, whose memories from when he was brainwashed have come back that Peter never attacked him when he was under the Kingpin's influence, which brought Gwen happiness as she hopes to patch things up with Peter. However, her joy was replaced with worry when Betty Brant and Ned Leeds told Gwen that Peter was on the roof of the Bugle building when the Vulture attacked.[36] Gwen's father was taken hostage in prison but was rescued by Spider-Man, who had been recently arrested.[37]
Peter repaired his relationship with Gwen and Captain Stacy.[38] After a fight with the Synthetic Man Peter was left bedridden and Gwen and Mary Jane came over to look after him but ended up both going out with Harry instead.[39] When Peter picked up Gwen for a date, they witnessed the Man Monster attack the home of Captain Stacy. Peter sent Gwen for help and then changed into Spider-Man in an attempt to save Captain Stacy.[40]
Harry called Peter, telling him that his dad was back, and to celebrate his wellness, he invited Peter, MJ, and Gwen to a party he was throwing. Peter saw right through it as a trap, but picked up Gwen and went anyway, despite the danger. When the two arrive, Harry, MJ, and Norman were already there. After a little while, they started dinner. Norman started to lose his grip and would've attacked Peter in front of everyone if dinner had lasted longer. After the Goblin and Spider-Man battled, Harry, MJ, and Gwen met with Peter again, as Harry met with his father again while Peter walked out with the girls, still worrying about the Goblin returning.[41]
Gwen Stacy visited her father. When the phone rings, Gwen hopes it's Peter, but it turns out to be only Joe Robertson checking to see if there's been any new word on Mysterio.[42] When Peter and Gwen visit Aunt May, May pretends to be in better health than she really is so as not to spoil the young lovers happiness.[43] A group of student protesters were arrested in connection with the theft of an ancient clay tablet. When Gwen Stacy arrives at the police station, she slaps one of the protesters in the face when he calls Peter a coward. When she tells her father about it, he asks her if maybe she was more worried that it's truth, a question which Gwen isn't sure of the answer.[44] Peter is later told off by Gwen for not calling her and she confronts him with the fact that she thinks he's a coward.[45]
When Peter later meets up with Gwen, they are surprised to see Flash Thompson is back in town. However, when Flash makes a harmless flirtatious remark towards her Peter loses his temper. Which upsets both Flash and Gwen who leaves Peter to mull over his current relationship problems.[46] Spider-Man has come to the Stacy home to ask George Stacy if he can provide any clues about where the Shocker may have taken the tablet stolen from his home. After overhearing Gwen talking about Peter to her father, Spider-Man makes his presence known to Stacy, after some consideration George gives Spider-Man the only lead he can think of: The address of the Shocker's ex-girlfriend.[47] At Empire State University campus, Peter walks around in a complete daze and doesn't even notice Harry Osborn's new mustache. Harry is puzzled by Peter's lack of reaction, but Gwen Stacy sticks up for her man. She tells Harry to help Peter instead of giving hostility, and to actually act like his friend.[48]
Peter later visits the Stacy home, and meets with Gwen, who asks Peter to share his secret with her because his disappearances have gone on far too long. Peter promises he'll tell her soon, but not yet. Before going out on a date, they are interrupted by George Stacy and Joe Robertson, who have been talking about Spider-Man. George asks Peter to come back sometime soon and discuss what he knows about Spider-Man, having taken so many pictures of the wall crawler.[49] When Peter asks Gwen to meet with him, she tells him she's busy, Pete completely unaware that she has Flash Thompson over for a visit.
Peter tries to study but finds that he cannot get Gwen off the brain, and decides to go and see her anyway, coming up with an excuse for his visit. However, along the way, he spies Gwen with Flash Thompson when he walks pass the Coffee Pot café. Unaware that she's seeking advice about Peter and his secret, Peter assumes that the two of them have become an item and storms off.[50] The next day, while Peter is on the campus of ESU he is confronted by Gwen, who is upset with him ignoring her, he confronts her with the fact that he saw her out with Flash Thompson the night before and leaves before she has a chance to explain.[51]
At his apartment mulling over how to deal with what he believes is a relationship going on between Flash Thompson and Gwen Stacy, Harry comes home with Flash. Peter loses his temper and almost pummels his former rival, when Flash explains the truth of what happened: That Gwen came to him for advice over her troubled relationship with Peter. Realizing what a fool he's made of himself, Peter calls Gwen to apologize and the two make up and agree to go to the Midtown Museum exhibit that her father is in charge of guarding priceless paintings. Peter rushes there as Spider-Man so he can meet Gwen on time.
When Peter and Gwen steal a kiss, Peter's spider-sense goes off, but it appears to only be George Stacy, although Peter finds it strange that George walked by as if he didn't recognize it. When the painting that was on display turns out to be stolen, Peter and Gwen realize that George is nowhere to be found. They rush back to the Stacy home where they find a dazed and confused George Stacy with no recollection of making it out to the museum. In reality, the "George Stacy" at the museum is really the Chameleon.[52] Gwen calls and invites Peter out to Flash Thompson's farewell party as he is returning to duty in Vietnam. As Peter's financial woes get the better of him, causing him to snap at another one of Flash's harmless flirtations towards Gwen, he storms out of the going away party.[53]
Peter and his friends bid farewell to Flash Thompson who is going back to fight in Vietnam. Later as Peter and Gwen are strolling through the streets, Peter is about to confide in Gwen that he's really Spider-Man. At that moment, the Schemer's men attack another one of the Kingpin's trucks. When it's jackknifed off the road, it pins Peter and Gwen under it. Gwen is knocked out and Peter uses his spider-strength to get them out of anymore harm's way. With no leads to go on, Spider-Man changes back into Peter Parker and goes back to Gwen in the hospital. Gwen has just come out of her coma and is upset that Peter wasn't there by her side. She asks her father to escort Peter away. As they are leaving, George tries to console Peter telling him that Gwen will be in a better mood the next day. Before leaving, Peter almost let it slip to George that he's really Spider-Man, before catching himself and quickly departing.[54]
With no leads on the Schemer Peter decides to pay a visit to Gwen who is recovering at home following her release from the hospital. At first Gwen gives him a cold reception because of his leaving her at the hospital; however as they discuss just how Peter managed to not be harmed in the accident is too close for the Stacy's learning the truth about his secret identity that Peter makes an excuse for an abrupt departure.[55] While at the apartment that Peter Parker shares with Harry Osborn, Peter mulls over his studies while thinking about how he's so broke he can't afford a present for Gwen's upcoming birthday.
He's roused from his work when Gwen and her father come by for a visit and start asking him questions about his connection with Spider-Man. George is suspicious about how Peter can be present so many times when Spider-Man is in action. Using the fact that he has pictures to develop as an excuse to go into his dark room, Peter quickly changes into Spider-Man and enters in through another window. Pretending to be a different person, Spidey demands to see Peter Parker for his cut of the money for the pictures that Parker takes. The Stacy's fall for it, and "cover" for Peter by telling Spider-Man that he isn't there. Satisfied that his secret is safe, Spider-Man departs, and waits for the Stacy's to leave. As Spider-Man succeeds in capturing the Schemer, Gwen and George Stacy return to Parker's home to find it empty.
They wonder if Peter was either kidnapped or willingly left with Spider-Man, this prompts George to call the local precinct.[56] When Spider-Man is about to enter his apartment when he spies Harry Osborn, Gwen and George Stacy waiting for him. Sneaking some clothing, Spidey changes back into Peter Parker and enters the apartment. When Gwen sees the bruises on his face, she demands to know what sort of trouble he's in. When Peter isn't forthcoming with answers, she tells him not to call her until he can promise not to get involved with Spider-Man ever again, and leaves with her father.[57]
Coming to the conclusion that his spider-powers are fading for good, the ailing Peter Parker realizes that today is Gwen Stacy's birthday, and he hasn't been able to get her a gift. In a moment of desperation, he uses his fading spider-powers to steal a pearl necklace from the jewelry store but stops himself at the last moment. As Gwen's birthday party begins, Gwen becomes aware of Peter's absence and begins to get upset. The party is then suddenly shocked when Peter enters the party, Spider-Man mask in hand and tells everyone that because his powers are fading, he can finally reveal that he's Spider-Man.
When George Stacy points out that Peter is feverish and sick, Peter realizes that he's putting Gwen through enough distress to cause hysteria and flees. Taking off his costume and disguising his face, Peter visits Hobie Brown and asks him to help fool everyone into once more believing that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are two different people. Peter then goes to visit the Stacy's home and explains to Gwen, George, Mary Jane and Harry that he was in a fever state and didn't know what he's saying. When Gwen doesn't immediately believe Peter, Hobie (dressed in Spider-Man's costume) enters through the window and his performance in front of everyone convinces the others that Peter's story is true.
His mission accomplished, Hobie leaves the scene and stashes Spider-Man's costume where he was told. Afterwords, Peter departs from the Stacy home, secure in the fact that his secret identity has been protected, but still has an uneasy feeling as though he's walking on eggshells.[4] Gwen and Peter's relationship was now back on track, but this was short lived due to the oncoming battle with Doctor Octopus.[58]
Death of Captain Stacy
As Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus battle on the rooftops on the ground there stands a child directly in the path of the falling bricks and Captain Stacy also in the crowd below pushes the child out of the way to save him. Unfortunately, Captain Stacy is hit full on with the bricks and Spider-Man goes down to save him. Pulling him out of the rubble and once atop the rooftop, Stacy dies in Spider-Man's hands, but not without first revealing that he knows Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Spider-Man is given instructions to look after Gwen Stacy, while Spider-Man worries that she may learn that her father died because of him.[59]
At the funeral of George Stacy everyone close to the late police captain is in attendance. Peter is there to support Gwen during this time; however, he begins to consider what would happen if Gwen who blames Spider-Man for her father's death ever found out that Peter is Spider-Man. Also in attendance is Sam Bullit, a man who was competing with George for the job of district attorney. When Gwen later asks to aid on Bullit's campaign, it's another advantage to Bullit. Spider-Man then heads back to his apartment.
Entering he is suddenly startled when the lights are turned on by Bullit who had come there with Gwen Stacy, because he knew there was a connection between Parker and Spider-Man.[60] Spider-Man has just been confronted by Sam Bullit and Gwen Stacy at Peter Parker's apartment. Spider-Man, hoping to talk sense into Gwen, grabs the girl and makes an exit. However, this is spotted by Robert Drake, who is out on a date. He changes into Iceman and attacks Spider-Man, whom he thinks will harm the girl, forcing Spidey to make an escape. Bullit thanks Iceman for his help and asks him to track down and capture Spider-Man.[61]
While dealing with the grief of her father's death, and Peter's sudden strange behavior, Gwen gets a call from her Uncle Arthur offering her to come out to England to live with them, a decision she needs to think about. She goes to see Peter to see if he wants her to stay; however, when she mentions her hatred of Spider-Man, it causes him to be reluctant to tell her to stay and Gwen, hurt, leaves Peter's apartment. Peter then storms off and loses his temper over how his alter ego constantly ruins his life. Swinging to Gwen's apartment, Spider-Man finds the land lady cleaning the place up. He learns from her that Gwen had left for the airport to go to England. Rushing there, Peter arrives moments too late, and watches in agony as her plane takes off. Realizing that his slow decision cost him the girl he loves, Peter leaves the airport.[62]
Now in England and away from Peter she is able to deal with her father's death.[63] When Robbie Robertson learns that of what happened to Gwen, he sends Peter on "Assignment" to England on the condition he takes news photos for the Bugle while he's out there. Peter is about to see Gwen, when he notices the news reports about Spider-Man being in England and realizes that Gwen could put two and two together and figure out his secret identity. Cursing his stupidity, Peter is forced to go home without visiting the girl he loves. Meanwhile, Gwen learns about Spider-Man's heroics in London from her Uncle, who suggests that in her grief, she might have done the web-slinger an injustice.[64] Gwen begins to realize that leaving Peter behind to move to England was a big mistake and decides to return back to New York and find Peter, and hopefully patch things up. When Peter returns home, he is greeted by Gwen.[65]
After a day out with Gwen Stacy, Peter decides that it's time he gets his personal life in order and tries to find a steady job. Disappointed that he doesn't have the money to take his girlfriend out, Peter arrives at Gwen's and tells her the news. Gwen tells Peter he's being silly and doesn't need to take her out and they opt to stay in, while she cooks them supper for a nice romantic night indoors.[66] Gwen was also encouraged by Mary Jane to forget her bitterness towards Spider-Man. [67]
Peter still trying to improve his life with Gwen takes a formula to remove his powers making him normal, but the reverse happened.[68] Peter panics, thinking of himself as a freak, he snaps back to reality when his phone rings, its Gwen, inviting him to come see a movie, Peter moans at her so that she'll hate him and forget him just in case they don't see each other again, Gwen gets the message and hangs up.[69] Gwen Stacy sits at home worrying about what happened to Peter. When she calls Aunt May, she becomes even more worried when Aunt May tells her she hasn't heard from Peter either.[70]
Gwen in the Savage Land
After hearing about a monster in the Savage Land, Jameson figures this is the scoop that the Bugle needs to stay afloat and decide to bring some of his staff to the Savage Land in order to snap pictures of this elusive beast. When Joe calls Peter to secure him for the expedition, Peter instantly agrees as he needs the money. This upsets Gwen, and Peter decides to take her to the Bugle. When he arrives there Jameson sees what he's has thought was missing from this expedition to begin with: A woman's perspective and asks Gwen if she'd like to come. When they arrive a creature grabs Gwen and leaves, Peter tries to stop the monster but is swatted away and lands in a nearby river. Gwen is then taken to a man who's "adopted" the monster, none other than Spider-Man's old foe, Kraven the Hunter.
As Calkin and Jameson go after the monster, they run into Ka-Zar and his sabertooth tiger Zabu and enlist his aid in trying to find Gwen. Meanwhile, Peter has changed into Spider-Man and begins his own search for Gwen as well.[71] Gog has brought Gwen to Kraven the Hunter, who has decided to take Gwen as his mate. Spider-Man battles Kraven with the help of Ka-Zar who then rushes Gwen back to Jameson and Calkin. After thanking Ka-Zar for his help and bidding him farewell, they depart from the Savage Land.[72]
Peter and Gwen arrive back in New York safely.[73] When Peter meets up with Gwen, he learns that they aren't going out on a date so much as checking in on Flash Thompson, who Gwen is worried about since he's come back from Vietnam. When Flash Thompson loses his temper over their concern, the couple decides to leave him be and go out for a romantic evening together.[74] Gwen meets with Randy Robertson who is in a good mood after the Daily Bugle does a report of the protest against the police surveillance cameras. She is later confronted by Flash who apologizes for how he acted.
When he tries to express his feelings for her, she stops him and tells him that her feelings for Peter are real. She then confronts him with the fact that that is not the only thing bothering him, Flash declines to talk about it. On his way back from the Daily Bugle Peter spots Gwen walking with Flash. He spots two military men pull up in a vehicle and escort Flash away, leaving Gwen in tears. Spider-Man wonders if this spectacle will change things between him and Gwen.[75]
When Peter tries to go off after them, Gwen stops him, calling him on the fact that everyone thinks him a coward.[76] Peter is stuck by Gwen, unable to go after Flash's attackers as Spider-Man because Gwen would think Peter Parker is a coward. While at Harry Osborn's apartment, Gwen arrives and tells Harry that Peter has been "kidnapped" by Spider-Man. When Aunt May enters the room, Gwen lashes out at her when she calls Peter a boy, but she quickly apologizes for her outburst and the two make peace. After he rescues Flash he tells Spider-Man that the whole story will be great to tell Gwen. Spider-Man departs and wonders how Peter Parker is going to be able to compete with Flash's feelings for Gwen now that he's a civilian again.[77]
When he returns home, he finds Gwen and Aunt May waiting for him. When May suddenly changes her tone when she catches herself fussing over Peter, Gwen tells Peter how she and May had an argument about how she is too coddling over Peter. Peter, too tired to do anything passes out in Gwen's arm and she puts him to rest of the couch. When Flash arrives to tell everyone he's okay, Harry asks him to walk Gwen home. Peter wakes up only in time to see Gwen and Flash leave the apartment and assumes the worst before dropping back to sleep.[78] When Peter returned home and tells Gwen that Aunt May has left, but tells her not to be hard on herself because her harsh words to Aunt May were long coming.[79] Gwen and Peter then go searching for Aunt May as she has been kidnapped.[80]
After fevered dreams of Aunt May being held hostage and dying at the hands of Dr. Octopus, Peter is awakened by Gwen Stacy. She and Harry have summoned Doctor Bromwell after realizing how ill Peter was. After examining Peter, Doctor Bromwell determines that Peter is suffering from nervous exhaustion and possibly has an ulcer to boot. The doctor gives Harry a prescription for Peter and Gwen promises to take good care of him.[81] While on the campus of ESU, Dr. Miles Warren confronts Gwen Stacy about the rumors he's heard about Peter Parker, she confirms them for him. She is then met by Flash Thompson, who makes a crack about Peter's ulcer. This upsets Gwen who tells him off and storms away.[82]
Gwen goes to the Daily Bugle, to see if they've heard anything about Aunt May. When Ned Leeds finishes the story, he was trying to tell Peter, that someone fitting Aunt May's description was hired by an employment agency and sent to a place in Westchester, Joe Robertson, Ned, and Gwen all leave to go to that location to see if May is there. Peter Parker appears shortly after Joe, Gwen and Ned arrive. When Peter meets with his Aunt May, she's called by Dr. Octopus briefly. When she comes back, she tells Peter that she's not coming back home, that Peter is a grown man and can make his own decisions, and that she's decided to stay here and keep watch of Dr. Octopus' home as per his request.[83]
Spider-Man web-slings across the city to meet up with Gwen for a date but can't help but keep an eye out for the Smasher. Meeting up with Gwen, Gwen feels bad for Aunt May's decisions of late because they were influenced over Gwen's criticisms of Aunt May's mothering of Peter, she reassures Peter that Flash is only a friend, and he has nothing to worry about. The couple then go to a fundraiser for Raleigh's campaign, where they meet with Mary Jane. During the event, Peter's spider-sense goes off, he notices the roof of the reception hall is about to collapse. Killing the lights Peter, with no time to change into his Spider-Man costume, tries to stop the collapse with his webbing; however, it's not enough, and unless he comes up with an idea fast, the roof will collapse and kill everyone there, including Gwen.[84] Gwen and Mary Jane attend a youth rally for Raleigh.[85]
Peter joins Harry, Gwen and Mary Jane in driving a campaign truck for Raleigh's campaign. It's shortly attacked by the Smasher. Everyone gets out safely before the Smasher destroyed the truck.[86] Peter calls from Canada to check in on Gwen, she tells Peter to come back to the States as quickly as possible because Harry has had a relapse from his previous drug overdose. Peter tells her that he has to finish business in Canada, but he will be back as soon as possible.[87]
Death and Post-Mortem Main article: The Night Gwen Stacy Died
While waiting for Peter in his apartment, Gwen is ambushed by The Green Goblin[5] announcing that he was looking for Peter, but he can kidnap Gwen instead to lure him into a trap.[6][88] Gwen throws a lamp at the Goblin, who knocks her out with gas from a pumpkin, which he leaves in Peter's apartment for him to later find,[6] before he brings the unconscious Gwen to the Brooklyn Bridge. Spider-Man later arrived to fight the Goblin, but Spider-Man was sick and not performing as well as usual.[5]
Peter holding Gwen's dead body
Before the fight began, Gwen awoke and overheard the Goblin announce that Peter is Spider-Man, sending her into a state of shock thinking that her boyfriend killed her father. Later, when Spider-Man goes to save her, Gwen wants to tell him to stay away from her, but her mouth is still frozen in shock. The Green Goblin pushes her off the bridge, while she feels nothing inside.[6] Spider-Man caught her by a leg with a string of web. The sudden stop in midair snapped Gwen's neck, making it difficult for her to breathe.[5]
She was still alive during the battle, with the revelation of Peter's secret identity making her die feeling betrayed, but Gwen's last thoughts were asking herself what she did to deserve this.[89] Spider-Man initially thought he had saved her, but when he pulled Gwen back up onto the bridge, he realized that she had died.[5] In anger, Spider-Man almost killed the Green Goblin in retaliation, but chose not to do so in the end. The Green Goblin still seemingly died anyway when he was impaled by his own Goblin Glider in an attempt to kill Spider-Man (he was later discovered to have survived).[10]
The death of Gwen Stacy had enormous repercussions. Mary Jane, a close friend of Gwen, was deeply affected by her death. Consequently, Mary Jane became much more serious and compassionate. Gwen's death also drew Peter and Mary Jane into a closer friendship, and eventually a romantic relationship. The Punisher tried to hunt down Spider-Man, as he wrongly believed the hero to be Gwen's murderer.[90] The Punisher had been manipulated into going after Spider-Man by a supervillain called the Jackal.
The Jackal was once Miles Warren, a former professor of Gwen, who had secretly been in love with her. Following her death, Warren grew increasingly insane and adopted the persona of the Jackal. He also became completely obsessed with Gwen and created a clone of her. The Green Goblin manipulated the Jackal and the clone of Gwen and used both of them in the Clone Saga. Eventually, the clone established her own identity,[91] but later was killed by her own prototype, who also later died.[92]
Sins Past
Gwen's face?
After Gwen's death, a mad Harry Osborn created clones called Sarah and Gabriel Stacy from the DNA of Norman and Gwen, intending to make his father and best friend believe Norman and Gwen had twin children together. To sell the scheme, Mary Jane Watson was hypnotized by Mysterio to believe the same.
However, though Peter was devastated to think of Gwen cheating on him with Norman, he somehow felt in his heart that it was not true, though he would not get confirmation of his suspicions for some time. Once Harry died, an A.I. of him controlled by Mephisto took over the cloning process of the twins, whose clone degeneration caused them to die over and over, and every time Mephisto would torture them in hell before sending them back resurrected with new bodies. Eventually the twins absorbed the A.I.'s consciousness and began tormenting Peter in the guise of Harry, all the while believing Gwen was their mother and believing the motivations of hate the Harry A.I. held for Peter.[93]
Dead No More
A new clone of Gwen Stacy was created years later by the new Jackal. The Jackal's new cloning technique allowed for the clone to possess all of the memories of the real Gwen up to the point of her death, which convinced both of them that the clone was in fact the real Gwen Stacy brought back from the dead. Unfortunately, this new cloning technique afflicted all of its subjects with cellular decay, which was prevented with the daily consumption of a pill.[6] This new Jackal was in turn a clone of Peter Parker known as Ben Reilly.[89] Gwen noticed the similarities between him and Peter even though he used a voice modulator to hide his identity. She went along with his plan to extend the reach of his new cloning technology for a better world since she saw some of Peter Parker within Ben.[94]
New U Technologies
In order to investigate the Jackal's new enterprise, New U Technologies, an alternate reality spider-powered version of Gwen known as Spider-Woman kidnapped the cloned Gwen and impersonated her.[95] The cloned Gwen was kept hostage by Scarlet Spider,[96] but she returned to New U after the impostor was outed.[89] At New U's headquarters, Gwen reunited with Spider-Man, who the Jackal had brought to his base to convince him to join forces.[97] During a private conversation, Gwen forgave Peter for her and her father's deaths. She also tried to convince Peter to join the Jackal, but her reassurances that her and all of the people cloned back to life by the Jackal were the originals had no effect on him.[94]
All of the Jackal's clones, including Gwen, began to decay when their creator started to broadcast globally a frequency that accelerated the cellular degeneration.[97] Gwen helped Spider-Man by directing him to the Jackal's lab and stayed behind and confronted Green Goblin, Hobgoblin and Jack O'Lantern on her own to buy time for Peter. She set off a Pumpkin Bombs killing herself along with them.[7]
Kindred and Judgment
Her corpse, along with others, was eventually dug up by Kindred in order to torment Spider-Man.[98] After Kindred's initial capture, the bodies of Gwen and the others were taken by Carlie Cooper to her morgue in order to prevent the police from linking them with Peter and discovering he was Spider-Man.[99] When Kindred revealed "himself" to Peter as Gabriel and Sarah, they battled before Mephisto killed the twins as they no longer served a purpose. Before dying, Sarah asks Peter if they never really had a mother, to which Peter answers that if things had been different Gwen would have loved them as a mother no matter what.[100]
When the Progenitor declared that humanity would be judged, it appeared to Peter Parker as Gwen Stacy with its thumb awaiting judgment. After observing Peter throughout the day and hearing a heartfelt confession from him, the Progenitor approved of Peter. As a reward, the Progenitor revived the real Gwen Stacy so that they could share a moment together, but only for a moment as she disappeared soon after.[8]
All-New, All-Deadly Gwenpool
Gwen reveals her identity to Peter and Gwenpool.
