Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 : The girl I love

The next morning arrived with golden light brushing across the city's shoulders. It was the kind of morning that promised nothing but offered quiet chances. Eli opened the bookstore earlier than usual. He didn't know if she'd come, but something inside him was awake in a new way—a gentle kind of hope that made everything feel lighter.

The scent of freshly ground beans filled the shop. Eli brewed two cups, just in case. Her usual, and something new. Because today felt like a beginning.

The bell above the door didn't ring at first. But when it finally did, hours later, it did so gently. As if it had missed her too.

Alina stood in the doorway, hair slightly windswept, cheeks tinged with the cold morning air. She smiled, and this time it wasn't guarded. It was the kind of smile you give to someone you've been thinking about too much.

"Trying something new today?" she asked, gesturing to the second coffee.

Eli looked up from the counter and smiled. "I was thinking of surprising you. But now that I've seen you, I realize nothing else could."

She laughed softly and stepped closer. There was something different about her posture now. She wasn't just visiting a store—she was returning to a place that felt safe. To someone who had begun to feel essential.

"I wasn't sure if I should come," she said.

"I wasn't sure if I should hope," he replied.

They didn't need to explain further. Their silences spoke enough.

Alina took the new coffee and sipped. She made a face.

"Too sweet," she teased.

Eli chuckled. "I'll remember that."

"You always do."

That sentence hung in the air like music neither of them wanted to stop. She walked to the table by the window and sat. He followed.

"You still carry that notebook?" she asked.

He blinked, caught slightly off guard. "You remember?"

She nodded. "You mentioned it once, after I asked if you write. You didn't let me read it then."

Eli smiled, a little shyly. "I guess I was still figuring out what I wanted to say."

She tilted her head. "And now?"

He reached into his coat and took out the small, familiar notebook. He flipped through pages until he found one he had memorized, but still needed to read out loud.

Then he spoke:

You walked into the silence I wore like armor. And without asking, made it into a song. Now when I'm alone, I still hear you.

Alina didn't speak right away. Her eyes had softened, and she was tracing the rim of her cup with slow fingers.

"I don't know what to say," she whispered.

"You don't have to."

She looked at him, something fragile shining in her gaze. "I'm not used to this."

"Being seen?"

"Being... cherished."

He didn't flinch. "You should be."

She exhaled. "I'm scared again."

"I know," he said. "But this time, maybe you don't have to run."

She didn't answer. But she didn't move either. That was something.

They sat together in the quiet hum of the shop, watching the world move outside.

Eventually, she broke the silence. "You make things feel simple."

Eli shook his head. "I think they've always been simple. We just forget."

She smiled, genuinely this time. "So what happens now?"

"I think we keep talking," he said. "Keep showing up."

Alina reached across the table, fingers grazing his. "I can try."

That night, Eli returned to his room. He placed the coffee cup she left behind on his windowsill like a small monument.

He opened his journal again.

She held my hand like it wasn't a question. And in her silence, I found every answer I was afraid to ask.

---

Alina sat on her bed, flipping through an old book. Her heart felt light and full at once. She had spent so much time fearing what could go wrong. Today she had simply let it go right.

She whispered to herself, "Maybe I'm not falling. Maybe I'm just learning how to stand with someone else."

She reached for her phone. No message.

But somehow, she knew he was writing about her.

And somehow, that was enough.
