There were five figures in the shadows. I hadn't noticed them earlier, the dim light stretching their shadows across the street. A passing car's headlights briefly illuminated one of their faces—and I froze.
It was a criminal the entire country had been hunting for the past four years. He appeared to be making a deal in person. Standing next to him was a lookalike—his usual trick to avoid being caught.
They saw me.
A cold, emotionless feeling filled my heart. I turned to run. My legs screamed in pain—and then it hit me.
The last thing I heard was the hiss of compressed air, followed by a crack like thunder as a projectile moving at the speed of sound struck the back of my head.
A gunshot rang out.
That was the last sound of my life.
