"You want me to investigate what?" I stare at Mr. Roth across his mahogany desk, wondering if I heard him correctly.
"The Jin family massacre," he repeats, his weathered face grim. "Three days ago, someone slaughtered the entire household. Parents, children, even the servants. The police investigation hit a wall within hours."
Catherine Shaw sits beside her father, her usual arrogance replaced by nervous energy. She keeps glancing at me like I'm a ticking bomb.
"Why come to me?"
Mr. Roth leans forward. "Because whoever did this has connections that reach into the highest levels of law enforcement. Normal investigators can't touch this case."
"And you think I can?"
"I think you're the only one in Everbrook City who doesn't care about stepping on powerful toes."
I study his face, looking for signs of deception. The Roth family runs one of the city's most successful law firms, but they're not stupid enough to get involved in something this dangerous without good reason.
