Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 – Rising Sun Duel

May 1, 2019 – Kawasaki, Japan

Todoroki Stadium shimmered beneath the lights. Banners rippled. Chants bounced between steel and sky.

A Japanese commentator remarked with a hint of surprise:

> "More than 400 Indian supporters have flown in. And they haven't stopped singing."

Indeed, they hadn't.

Among the chants and flags — one stood tall:

"The Elephant Remembers."

---

✦ Arrival

Arjun stepped off the team bus, jacket zipped up to his neck. Behind him, Faizan walked in silence, earphones in, head lowered.

Kerala Blasters weren't just here to compete.

They were here to make the world remember the name.

> "No away goals rule," Coach Sameer reminded the squad. "It's clean. You win tonight — you're in the final. Simple."

Arjun tied his laces slowly. There was a calm to his fingers, but a storm in his chest.

He thought of his father.

Of his mother, watching from Thrissur.

Of the 14-year-old fan, Adarsh, who'd written:

> "You carry us, chetta. You march, we sing."

---

✦ 1st Half – The Wind Rises

Kawasaki came out hard.

Precise. Cold. Technical. Their passing triangle rotated with robotic perfection. They aimed to strangle Kerala early.

In the 8th minute, a stinging shot forced Albino Gomes to a full-stretch save.

Coach Sameer screamed:

> "Wake up! This isn't a festival!"

But Arjun was already awake.

In the 14th, he dropped deep, stole possession from their central playmaker, turned, and launched a 40-yard diagonal to Faizan. The crowd gasped.

Faizan beat the right-back and whipped in a low cross.

Sahal reached it —

But blazed it over.

Hands on heads.

---

✦ 31st Minute – Silence in the Rain

The drizzle returned. The field glistened. Kawasaki pushed again.

And finally, they broke the line.

A give-and-go. A cutback.

A low finish past Gomes.

1–0. Kawasaki (2–1 aggregate)

Their fans exploded.

Kerala's fans stood stunned but proud, their yellow flags refusing to drop.

Coach Sameer didn't yell.

He turned to his assistant.

> "Tell Arjun: freedom. Nothing to lose. Let him off the chain."

---

✦ 38th to 45th Minute – Dev Awakens

It began with a shoulder drop.

Arjun received the ball just past midfield. He danced past one, rolled it through another's legs, and drove forward like a battering ram blessed with silk.

Shot — saved.

But the crowd felt it.

Kerala found their rhythm. Like a tabla's beat behind classical carnatic vocals — structure and soul.

The half-time whistle blew.

Still 1–0 to Kawasaki.

But something had changed.

---

✦ Halftime – The Fire Speech

The locker room smelled of sweat and wet grass.

Coach Sameer walked to the center, drenched but defiant.

> "They play to win.

But you? You play so your children know what it meant to be Indian tonight."

He looked at Arjun.

> "You carry Thrissur, Arjun. But more than that, you carry silence. That night in your backyard. That voice of your father. Use it."

No more tactics.

Only belief.

---

✦ 2nd Half – The Elephant Charges

52nd minute: Sahal to Jeakson. Jeakson to Arjun.

One touch. Turn. Rocket.

Top corner.

1–1. (2–2 aggregate)

The away section exploded. A thousand voices. One chant.

> "Oru paadam, oru veeran… Marannilla njangale!"

Even Kawasaki fans clapped.

Rainer Graf, watching in the VIP box beside a Bundesliga liaison, whispered:

> "Now he's not just an Indian talent. He's a European one."

---

✦ 72nd Minute – The Moment of Pain

A mistimed tackle. A high knee.

Arjun rolled. Clutched his ankle.

The stadium gasped.

Medical rushed in.

He waved them off.

Coach Sameer ran down the touchline, yelling:

> "If you can't walk—"

> "I can run," Arjun shot back.

He stood. Limped. And stayed on.

---

✦ 84th Minute – Destiny's Crossroads

Faizan intercepted a backpass. He darted to the box, defenders chasing.

He paused. Looked up.

Arjun arrived like thunder behind him.

A square ball.

A first-time shot.

2–1 Kerala. (3–2 aggregate)

Silence. Then… song.

Even the Japanese fans… sang.

---

✦ Full Time

The referee blew the final whistle.

Kerala Blasters — an ISL club — had just made it to the AFC Champions League Final.

Players collapsed. Fans cried. One player — Arjun Dev — dropped to his knees, kissed the badge, and pointed to the sky.

He whispered something only the rain heard:

> "Appa… we did it."

---

✦ Post-Match — A Letter and a Name

That night, on Instagram, Kalyani posted a story.

A screenshot of the goal.

Her caption:

> "When one elephant marches, the world watches."
