Absolutely—let's continue with Chapter 2 of The Dragon of Iron.

This chapter will:

✅ Show Willem's first base expansion.

✅ Begin early skirmishes.

✅ Lay seeds of tension with reincarnators elsewhere.

✅ Keep the ~5,000 word target and human-like tone.

🌍🔥 THE DRAGON OF IRON

Chapter 2 — Sparks in the Dark

Southern Free State Forest — 1440, Nightfall

The hum of the power conduits was the only sound that kept Willem company as he reviewed the holographic schematics floating in the air before him. Blue lines sketched out each structure: the ore refinery's smelter towers, the vehicle assembly gantries, the skeletal frame of the first watchtower.

He'd fought in more warzones than he cared to count—Chad, Mozambique, the DRC. But never had he seen a Forward Operating Base rise from nothing with such perfect speed. It was eerie how the system's drones worked—silent and tireless, welding armored plates and feeding them into place as if guided by an invisible hand.

His gaze drifted over the vehicle bay. A fresh icon blinked to life.

Cheetah MBT

Springbok IFV

Hornbill Gunship

Oryx Stealth Fighter

T-45 Power Armor Squad

T-60 Power Armor Squad

He selected the Cheetah MBT. The system projected a 3D model spinning in the air—a hybrid of Leopard 2 and Abrams DNA, bristling with reactive armor and a co-axial autocannon.

Willem tapped the icon.

[Production Commenced.]

It was as if he'd just ordered a cup of coffee.

He drew a slow breath, watching as drones began laying reinforced flooring in the assembly bay.

If anyone tries to overrun this place, they're in for a bastard of a surprise.

— Half a Kilometer Away —

The forest was alive with whispers.

Three figures crouched behind a low ridge, their faces painted in ochre and ash. Bare feet rested on dry leaves as they peered at the glowing construction yard.

One of them—a tall hunter with cords of muscle braided under his skin—adjusted a rough copper monocle. The lens magnified the strange metal fort.

"The demons build their nest," he murmured in a dialect older than any Willem knew.

His companion—a woman with a crude iron spear—clutched a leather charm to her chest.

"We must tell the Chieftain. Before their steel beasts come for us."

The hunter gave no answer. His one good eye gleamed with fear.

— Back at the Base —

Willem turned away from the vehicle bay as the first watchtower finished construction. Searchlights swept over the treeline, throwing long shadows across the dirt. He spotted the faintest movement—a flicker of color between branches—and stiffened.

"Perimeter breach," he called out. "Sector Three."

The nearest soldier—a corporal named Steyn—snapped his rifle up. Willem felt a flicker of dark pride. They were perfectly trained. Not a wasted motion.

"Thermals up," Willem ordered. His HUD shifted—color washed away in a flood of black and white. Two human heat signatures crouched low, one already retreating into deeper cover.

He clicked his tongue. Scouts. Probably the first of many.

"Steyn—take a fireteam. Shadow them, but do not engage without my word. I want to know where they came from."

"Yes, sir."

As the squad melted into the darkness, Willem turned his attention back to the console. He selected the Springbok IFV next—light armor, fast deployment, excellent for patrols.

Build up fast, he reminded himself. Establish overwhelming force. Then negotiate from strength.

The familiar mantra steadied him. No matter how alien this place was, the rules of power hadn't changed.

— A Mile North —

The scouts fled through the underbrush, hearts hammering. They didn't stop until they reached a hollow at the base of a hill, where a dozen warriors crouched around a smoky campfire. All heads turned as the hunter skidded to a halt.

"Steel men," he rasped. "Building walls and towers. I saw iron beasts taking shape."

A chieftain rose, mantle of woven feathers brushing the ground. His voice was calm, but the lines of his face were etched in worry.

"Then it is true. The prophecy of the Dawnlight. The ones who fall from the sky."

"What will we do?" asked the woman, clutching her charm. "If they come…"

The chieftain's gaze burned cold.

"We will resist until the last of our blood waters this earth."

— Dawn —

The first Cheetah MBT rumbled out of the assembly bay, engines growling like a waking predator. Steyn's squad returned, mud-caked and silent. Willem met them at the edge of the yard.

"Report."

Steyn saluted. "We tracked them to a settlement two miles north. Approximately 150 structures—timber, thatch. Defensive earthworks, primitive watchtowers. Estimated 800–1,000 population."

"Armament?"

"Mostly iron and copper weapons. Some crude black powder arms. No sign of advanced metallurgy."

Willem nodded slowly, mind already racing. One thousand was no small number. If they decided to swarm the base, even primitive weapons could overwhelm a thin defensive line.

He keyed the system again:

[Construct Defensive Perimeter: 3km Radius]

[Deploy Auto-Turrets: 12 Units]

[Begin T-45 Power Armor Production]

He turned to Steyn.

"We will not wait for them to strike. Prepare an armored reconnaissance force. Two IFVs, one MBT, and a T-45 squad once they're ready. We need to show them the cost of hostility."

Steyn's eyes gleamed. "Yes, sir."

— That Afternoon —

The Draconic Emperor, they would call him centuries later.

But now, he was just a man in battered fatigues, watching the first armored column crawl down a dirt trail.

Willem climbed onto the Cheetah's hull, his boots thudding against reactive armor plates. The tank commander popped the hatch, offering him a headset.

He slipped it on. Static crackled in his ear.

"Commander," the crewman greeted. "Systems green across the board."

Willem's gaze swept the forest canopy. The smell of hot oil and churned earth filled his lungs.

"Advance," he ordered. "Show them we are not prey."

The convoy rolled forward—steel behemoths under a sun that seemed to blaze with quiet judgment.

— Northern Settlement —

Children shrieked as the first IFV trundled into view, gun turret swiveling. Warriors scrambled to raise shields and level crude muskets. The chieftain's eyes widened in horror.

"Gods preserve us…"

Willem climbed down from the tank. Dust billowed around him as he stepped into the open, hands raised to show he was unarmed.

He spoke in a voice that carried across the hushed crowd.

"Lay down your weapons. You will not be harmed."

His translator drone repeated the words in the native tongue—smooth and toneless.

For an instant, no one moved.

Then a musket fired. The shot went wide, but it shattered any hope of a peaceful surrender.

"Fire," Willem said, voice cold.

The IFV's autocannon roared, shredding a barricade into splinters. Screams rose as villagers scattered. He felt nothing—only the distant ache of inevitability.

— After the Skirmish —

The chieftain lay among the ruins, clutching his side. Blood seeped between his fingers.

Willem crouched over him, studying the defiant eyes that refused to look away.

"You could have avoided this," he said quietly.

The chieftain spat blood. "You are no man. You are death in iron skin."

Willem's gaze hardened.

"No," he said. "I am the future. And you will either join me—or vanish."

The chieftain's eyes fluttered shut.

— That Night —

As the prisoners were herded into makeshift pens, Willem returned to the base. The first T-45 squad stood at attention—towering figures in armored exosuits. The vehicle bay hummed with energy as another MBT took shape.

He stood on the rampart of the newly completed wall, watching searchlights cut across the trees. Somewhere out there, more settlements would be preparing for war.

He felt no triumph. Only the familiar chill of responsibility.

This is how it begins, he thought.

Brick by brick. Battle by battle.

Until all South Africa kneels.
