Chapter 10 - Blood and Betrayal

Part I – Whispers Behind the Throne

The Shadow Court was not made of loyalty.

It was made of fear, power, and opportunity.

And in the cracks of that structure… betrayal always finds a way.

In the war chamber of the Black Citadel, a secret file was delivered to Velatrix.

It was anonymous.Untraceable.Marked with one word: "Traitor."

Inside: proof that one of their own had been feeding information to the Church for over three weeks.

And worse… that this traitor had contacted Kael.

Part II – The Trial of Chains

In the depths of the Citadel, beneath the Hall of Bone, the seven members of the Shadow Court stood in a circle—each bound by magic oaths to speak truth, unless they were willing to bleed for their lies.

Zerath entered last. No words. Just silence.

Vaenira stood still, hand on blade. Gorhax paced like a caged beast. Yurein's bones clattered in anticipation.

The suspect: Grimul, the Demon of Forbidden Law.

He had always been loyal to balance, not chaos.

Now, under Velatrix's evidence and the Librarian's memories, he was exposed.

"You sought to trade Zerath's plans to the High Bishop," Vaenira growled."Why?"

"I believed," Grimul said, "that our master had begun something that cannot be controlled."

Zerath raised a hand.

"You were right," he said simply.

Then burned him alive with a single word.

Part III – A Hero and a Liar Reunite

Location: Ruins of Elderstead

Kael returned to where his village once stood—now barely ash and scattered bones.

He expected silence.

Instead, he found her.

Vaenira.

Unmasked. Standing in the rain. Waiting.

Kael drew his blade instantly.

"You," he growled.

"I expected worse," she said quietly. "You've grown."

"I should kill you."

"You should," she agreed.

But Kael hesitated.

She tossed a sealed scroll toward him. "Read it."

Inside: a map showing the true location of the Spear of Astrael—the relic stolen by Zerath. Not a lie. Not bait. A real leak.

"I'm not here to stop you," Vaenira said. "I'm here because… I'm tired of all of it."

Kael stared.

"Why betray him?" he asked. "You're his blade."

Her eyes lowered. "I was also yours once."

Part IV – The Throne Watches

In the Citadel, Velatrix approached Zerath in his chamber.

"She met the boy," the Spider of Secrets said.

Zerath didn't look surprised.

"She gave him the map," she added.

Now, he looked up.

"And?"

"She's cracking."

He rose from his throne slowly.

"No," he said. "She's remembering."

Part V – An Empire Fractures, A War Awakens

Far in the east, the Crownless War escalated—Virelden's capital fell under siege. Refugees streamed across borders, and churches burned from both divine rage and public distrust.

And in the west…

Kael rode with his templars toward the Spear's resting place.

With Vaenira watching from the shadows—not yet his enemy……but no longer Zerath's ally.
