Chapter 13 - Chapter 10: The Third Trial (I)

Augustus POV:

I was waiting alongside the others as the time of the third trial approached. As the final preparations came to an end, the Elders in charge of the trials began speaking. "The trial of combat shall be one-on-one battles. Everybody will fight 3 battles against randomly selected opponents, and at the end of the trial, the top three hundred will be granted the opportunity to enter the Aurora Pocket Dimension. To select your opponent, we will draw lots. The pairs will be the 1st and 600th, 2nd and 599th, 3rd and 598th, and so on. After each battle, new numbers will be drawn to match up with new opponents. Now all of you, come up and grab a number using your energy. Be sure not to disturb someone else, as that is grounds for immediate disqualification." I walked up beside Samael to pick out their numbers from the large bowl, reaching into it with our energy. I got hold of the bamboo stick with a number on it and read it out loud to myself. "367, huh. That means I will fight against number 233. What number did you get, Mael?" "I got 189, Aug. See you later, and let's hope we don't have to fight each other in the next round." "Yeah, Mael. I hope to never have to face you in the arenas." Samael and I laughed, then we walked to our designated arenas. I was going to be fighting in arena 233, while Samael would fight in arena 189. As the battle grew closer, I pulled up my status page.

3rd POV:

Samael arrived at arena 189 at the same time his opponent did. His opponent was a young woman, 15 or 16 years of age. She was wearing a black robe, embroidered with silver stars. The robe was loose-fitting, and Samael couldn't make out what weapon she was using. The announcer for arena 189 called out the names of the contestants. "Samael of Akasi versus Samara Voidstar. The march will begin in 5 minutes. Ready yourself for combat!" Samael brought forward his new spear. It was a beautiful weapon. Its handle, made of a dark wood, seemed to suck in the light of the deep blue runes glowing all along it. The metallic reinforcements travelled along the hilt in a captivating fashion, giving off the feeling that the very weapon was alive. The spearheadwas made of the same metallic material as the handle reinforcements, but the tip had a glowing blue aura around it, almost as though it was calling for the very world around it to heed its command. Samael went into a high stance, the spear tip pointing towards the young woman, Samara, as the announcer had called her. In response, Samara pulled out her weapon from beneath her robe. She wielded a set of twin daggers. The heat radiating off the daggers made it clear they were highly attributed towards using fire. It was a bad matchup against Samael, who, in the time spent here, had come to learn that his bloodline made him highly adept at using the elemental laws of water. Though he could use the water element to an extent, it was still quite limited since he still hadn't broken his mortal shackles and ascended to Tier 1. Samara, on the other hand, was already at the 2nd stage, Chaos Acceptance Realm and Chaos Soul Realm. Though her physical abilities were significantly weaker than Samael's, she held what should be an overwhelming advantage in elemental law usage. Samael didn't look worried at all, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. His confident expression made Samara feel a sense of dread. She could tell Samael was far stronger than he let on, and she wouldn't stand a chance.

As the countdown reached zero and all the arenas began their battles, Samael continued to observe his opponent carefully. Though he can tell that he can overwhelm her with his physical prowess, the issue of elemental laws is one that's not easily solved. He can't afford to be caught off guard when his opponent has such an advantage over him. Samael resolved himself. He had to end this fight before Samara could use her fire laws against him. He couldn't afford to be tired out in the first fight. Samara circled Samael, looking at him like he was her prey. There was even a bit of pity in her eyes as she looked at him. Samael pounced, his immense speed wiping the pitying look off Samara's face as he stabbed forward. Samara barely managed to redirect the strike, getting a small gash on her shoulder. Samara attempted to close the distance by sidestepping Samael's thrusts. In response, the boy rotated his spear, hitting Samara in the back of the head with the imbued steel-tipped edge of the handle. Samara was caught by surprise and stumbled forward clumsily, getting punched by Samael in the throat as a result. Samara fell backwards, her throat bloodied by the impact as she struggled to recoup. Samael simply watched as she sat there struggling to get her surrender out. Tired of waiting, Samael went up to her and hit her hard in the back of the head, knocking her out cold. "Winner of arena 189: Samael of Akasi" the Elder, acting as an announcer's voice, spread out across the courtyard. Samael put his spear back onto his back as he exited the arena. He'd have to wait until the other fights were finished before he could draw his number for the next fight.

Soon, the voice rang out again, announcing the victors of the other arenas. Augustus had won his battle as well, to Samael's relief. As he went over to Augustus, he could tell it had been a tough battle. They both looked severely battered and bruised, having seemingly engaged in a brawl rather than the typical battle style of cultivators. "You did good, Aug! Let's go draw the numbers for our next battles." "When this third trial is over and I'm all healed up I need a spar with you, Mael. I want to be strong enough to not drag you down, so I'll be increasing my training so I can keep up!" Smiles lit up Samael's and Augustus' faces as they bantered and joked around, not bothered by the serious atmosphere in the courtyard.
