Victor glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his eyes questioning if I wanted him to take the call. I nodded quickly, wiping away the remnants of tears from my face.
"Go ahead," Victor said into the phone. "Mrs. Sterling is with me."
The investigator cleared his throat. "I've been tracking Gideon Thorne's movements as requested. He's been blackmailing Fiona Dubois for months."
My breath caught. "Blackmailing? For what?"
"That's the interesting part. He knows something about her that she's desperate to keep hidden. I haven't uncovered the exact details yet, but it's serious enough that she's been paying him significant sums."
I leaned forward. "How did you find this out?"
"Bank records. Regular transfers from an offshore account linked to her. And I managed to photograph them meeting twice—she looked terrified both times."
My mind raced through possibilities. What could my uncle possibly have on Fiona that would scare her enough to pay him off?
