I stood rooted to the spot at the police station entrance, watching the array of shocked expressions focused on me. Dominic Beaumont's face had transformed from grateful admiration to confusion in seconds.
"You're Elara? The one who saved my sister?" he asked, his eyes narrowing as he looked me over.
"Yes," I said simply. "I was driving by when I saw the accident."
I noticed Fiona's face drain of color. Beside her, Caleb stiffened, his hand tightening around her waist. The officer who'd been escorting me out looked between us, clearly sensing the tension.
"Ms. Dubois will be receiving a formal commendation for her bravery," he added, gesturing toward me. "We'll be in touch about the ceremony details."
"Thank you, officer," I replied, then turned to leave. I had no interest in whatever drama Fiona was trying to create. I'd learned long ago to walk away from her games.
As I headed toward the parking lot, I heard Fiona's voice rise behind me.
