Chapter 65 - Collision in the Moonlight

The suffocating weight of humiliation pressed down on my chest as I watched the door close behind Julian and Natalie. I forced a smile, turning back to my colleagues who sat in uncomfortable silence.

"Well, shall we continue?" I asked, proud that my voice didn't waver.

Conversation gradually resumed around me, though I caught several pitying glances thrown my way. Being Julian's mate in name only had become public knowledge, but having it displayed so blatantly stung worse than I'd anticipated.

I reached for my wine glass, abandoning my usual restraint. The rich red liquid burned down my throat, momentarily dulling the sharp edges of my pain. Before long, my glass was empty.

Dr. Mercer leaned toward me. "Are you alright, Aurelia?"

"Never better," I replied, signaling the waiter for another glass. "Just enjoying the evening."
