I awoke to the gentle knock on my door, momentarily disoriented by the unfamiliar surroundings. Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the luxurious bedroom that was apparently mine now.
"Miss Beaumont?" a voice called from beyond the door. "Are you awake?"
"Yes," I managed, my voice still thick with sleep. "Come in."
A middle-aged woman in a neat uniform entered, carrying a small tray. Her kind face broke into a warm smile when she saw me.
"Good morning. I'm Martha, the head of household staff. I've brought you some tea." She set the tray on the bedside table. "Mr. Hudson asked me to check if you needed anything and to inform you he'll be here at nine to discuss arrangements."
I glanced at the elegant clock on the wall. It was just after eight.
"Thank you, Martha." I pushed myself up against the plush headboard. "This is all very... new to me."
