Chapter 17 - Before the Darkness

Revan rubbed the back of his neck, breaking the silence. "Alright," he said, voice steady, "we've faced what's behind us. Now it's time to deal with what's ahead."

Cassie's eyes flickered with determination. "The ruins we found—the place where the book came from. If we don't understand that place, the shadows will keep hunting us."

Elara unfolded the ancient map from her satchel, pointing to a tangled section marked Blackwood Forest. "That's where the Echo is strongest. If we want to learn how to control or banish it, that's where we need to go next."

Revan's gaze hardened. "No more running, no more hiding. We face it head on."

Cassie cracked her knuckles. "Then let's move before whatever's hunting us catches up."

Elara gathered their gear. "The forest is no ordinary place. The trees remember. The shadows play tricks. We'll need all our wits—and trust in each other."

Revan nodded, feeling the weight of the mark pulse faintly beneath his skin. "Together, then. We survive this, or we don't."

With that, they stepped out into the chill evening air, the creeping shadows of Blackwood Forest waiting like a silent breath on their backs.

The campfire crackled softly, throwing flickering light on their worn faces as night settled around the edge of the clearing. The forest loomed like a dark sea beyond the ring of trees, its dense canopy swallowing even the moonlight.

Elara knelt by the fire, checking over their weapons and supplies with a practiced eye. "We don't know what waits for us in Blackwood," she said quietly. "But it's not just the shadows. The forest itself is alive—old magic, tangled roots, and whispers that can drive a person mad."

Cassie tightened the straps on her pack, her breath visible in the cool air. "I've felt it already. Like the trees are watching."

Revan pulled his cloak tighter around his shoulders, feeling the faint pulse of the mark beneath his skin. "We stick close. No wandering off, no lone trips."

Elara looked up, meeting their eyes. "Trust each other. Watch each other's backs. And if the shadows start to creep in, remember what you're fighting for."

Cassie nodded, a rare softness in her voice. "For the family we've found... and the one we're protecting."

Revan stared into the dying fire, feeling the weight of their mission settle deeper. "At first light, we move. Ready or not, Blackwood is waiting."

The night deepened, the forest humming with unseen life—and somewhere deep within, the Echo pulsed, waiting.

The first steps into Blackwood were like slipping beneath a shroud. The towering trees closed above them, their gnarled branches twisting into a near-impenetrable canopy that swallowed the sky. A thick, humid stillness wrapped around Revan, Cassie, and Elara, broken only by the soft crackle of leaves underfoot and the distant call of unseen creatures.

The sunlight filtered through in sickly green shafts, casting eerie shadows that danced and shifted like living things. Every sound — a twig snapping, the rustle of leaves — seemed amplified, echoing unnervingly through the dense woods.

Revan's hand hovered near the dagger at his belt, the faint pulse of the mark beneath his skin warning him of the lurking dangers. Cassie's breath came in quiet puffs, her eyes sharp as she scanned the shadows, frost magic simmering just beneath her fingertips. Elara moved with confident steps, her years of experience evident in the way she read the forest's subtle signs — broken branches, disturbed moss, a sudden chill in the air.

"We need to stay close," Elara murmured. "Blackwood plays tricks on the mind. It feeds on fear and doubt."

A sudden movement caught their attention — a flicker of shadow darting between the trees. Revan tensed, summoning a faint shimmer of shadow around his arm like a warning.

Cassie whispered, "It's watching us."

Elara nodded grimly. "And it knows we're here."

The deeper they ventured, the thicker the forest grew, the weight of ancient magic pressing down like a living thing. Yet even in that suffocating dark, their resolve burned brighter than ever.

Together, they stepped forward, into the heart of Blackwood — where the Echo awaited.

The air grew heavier with each step, thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Shadows pooled between the twisted roots, and a low, almost imperceptible hum seemed to vibrate through the ground beneath their feet — a subtle, otherworldly pulse that set nerves on edge.

Branches reached like skeletal fingers overhead, their bark rough and mottled with strange luminescent fungi that glowed faintly—ghostly blue and green hues casting unsettling halos in the darkness. The canopy shifted almost imperceptibly, like it was breathing, alive with unseen eyes watching their every move.

Mist curled around the forest floor, creeping tendrils that licked their ankles as if trying to pull them deeper into the undergrowth. The familiar world faded; sense warped as the boundaries between reality and shadow blurred.

Cassie's frost magic crackled faintly in response, tiny ice crystals forming on the edges of leaves and stones, a fragile counterpoint to the forest's oppressive warmth. Revan's shadow flickered nervously, restless in this place that seemed to mock the very essence of his power.

Even Elara, so steady and sure-footed, paused for a moment, her sharp gaze scanning the darkness. "Blackwood is alive," she said quietly, voice barely above a whisper. "It watches. It waits. And it remembers."

A sudden rustle made them freeze. From the shadows emerged a pair of glowing eyes, reflecting pale like a predator's. The creature stayed just beyond the torchlight's reach, its form indistinct — more shadow than flesh.

Revan swallowed hard, feeling the mark throb beneath his skin. This was no ordinary forest. Blackwood was a place of forgotten things, where time twisted and the past whispered dark secrets on the wind.

Ahead, a narrow path forked between two ancient oaks, their trunks scarred with strange runes that pulsed faintly with a cold blue light.

Elara stepped forward, voice steady but cautious. "This is where the trial begins."

They shared a glance — unspoken resolve passing between them — and together, they stepped forward into the unknown.

As they pressed deeper into Blackwood, the weight of the forest's silence grew heavier—no birdsong, no rustling of small creatures, only the soft crunch of their footsteps on the thick carpet of moss and leaves.

The path narrowed, hemmed in by gnarled roots that seemed to twist and writhe beneath their feet. Ahead, the faint glow of the runes on the ancient oaks pulsed steadily, casting eerie shadows that danced unnaturally.

Elara halted, her eyes darkening. "This is no ordinary test," she said quietly. "Blackwood doesn't just challenge your strength or skill. It hunts your fears… your doubts."

The air around them grew colder, though no breeze stirred the stagnant forest. Cassie shivered, fingers tightening around her frost crystal. Revan felt the familiar tug of the mark beneath his skin—its pulse quickening as if warning him.

A distant whisper echoed through the trees, indistinct but threaded with menace, as if the forest itself was speaking in a language just beyond understanding.

Elara stepped forward, voice low but firm. "We each face what lurks inside our own shadows. Only by confronting those truths can we move forward."

Before them, the runes flared bright, and the path seemed to dissolve into twisting shadows, beckoning them to step beyond—and into the trial.

The glow from the runes faded into a faint hum, a low vibration that seemed to pulse with the forest's heartbeat. The four of them gathered in a small clearing, the air thick with tension and unspoken fears.

Revan stretched his bound fingers, wincing as the mark beneath his skin throbbed. "Well, this feels like the kind of place that's going to try to eat us alive," he muttered, attempting levity but sounding anything but sure.

Cassie glanced at him, a half-smile tugging at her lips. "You're just scared it'll mess with your shadow," she teased lightly. "Which—let's be honest—is the only thing keeping you sane."

He shot her a look, but the corner of his mouth twitched. "Yeah, well, it's a lazy bastard. Not exactly the reliable type."

Elara folded her arms, watching them with a mixture of amusement and concern. "You both joke, but fear can be a weapon if you let it. This trial will pry at those weaknesses. You'll need to trust each other."

Revan met her gaze, nodding slowly. "Trust, huh? We're getting pretty good at that."

Cassie stepped closer to Revan, voice soft but firm. "We have to be. If we fall apart now, the forest will tear us down one by one."

Lira, usually quiet, finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "We've come this far. We can do this. Together."

A shared glance passed among them, a silent promise to face whatever darkness awaited.

Revan swallowed hard and exhaled, "Alright… let's show this forest what happens when shadows stand united."

The clearing fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the distant rustling of unseen creatures and the soft whisper of the wind threading through Blackwood's ancient trees.

Revan crouched by a gnarled root, running a hand over the rough bark as if drawing strength from its age. His eyes flickered downward, resting on the faint dark spiral of the mark curling on his forearm. The weight of it pressed deep inside—power and curse tangled in the same thread. He closed his eyes, swallowing the cold knot of doubt that churned in his chest.

Cassie approached quietly, her frost crystal clutched loosely in one hand. She knelt beside him, her breath visible in the chill air. "You alright?"

He gave a small, tired smile. "Yeah... Just thinking about how much I've lost. How much we all have."

Cassie's gaze softened. "We fight for more than just ourselves now. For each other. That's what keeps me going."

From the shadows, Elara's voice came steady, almost a whisper. "Fear isn't weakness. It's what makes courage real. It's what shapes us."

Lira shifted closer, her eyes wide but determined. "I never thought I'd find a family. You all… you're it."

Revan glanced up, meeting their eyes. The quiet strength in their faces bolstered something inside him—hope, maybe even a flicker of peace.

He exhaled slowly. "No matter what happens, we face it together."

Cassie reached out, her fingers brushing his arm in a rare moment of tenderness.

The forest around them seemed to lean in, waiting.

And in that stillness, they found the courage to step forward.
