Episode 56: Kill Code

---

Julian barely rolled aside as Unit K-11's blade-arm slammed into the rooftop, cleaving straight through concrete like it was paper. Sparks danced. The roof shook.

Eve scrambled to her feet, clutching the data drive like a lifeline, her eyes locked on the towering machine — a perfect blend of metal and menace.

"K-11," she gasped. "They activated the failsafe."

Julian fired round after round, but the bullets bounced harmlessly off its reinforced alloy. "That's not a failsafe. That's a damn terminator."

The bot turned to him slowly, eyes glowing crimson. A distorted voice echoed from its core.

"Target: Eve Dalton. Terminate."

Julian lunged, grabbing Eve's wrist. "We run. Now!"

They bolted, racing down rusted stairwells inside the comms tower. Metal groaned beneath their feet. The entire structure swayed with age.

Behind them, K-11 moved with deadly precision — not fast, but inevitable. Controlled. Calculated.

Eve's thoughts raced. "It'll jam any signal within range. If we don't finish the upload before it reaches the core—"

Julian cut her off. "Then we die trying."

---

Far across the city, Reese stumbled through a sewer tunnel lit by emergency flare. His shirt was torn, one eye swollen shut. But he kept moving.

In his hand, a salvaged data screen blinked with one word:

TRACKING.

Julian and Eve's signal had returned — faint, buried beneath layers of interference, but there.

He whispered hoarsely, "Hold on, you two. I'm coming."

---

Back at the tower's core, Eve slammed the drive into a backup server panel. The lights around the room flickered as the upload began.

Julian took position at the entrance, gripping an electric shotgun he'd rigged from parts in the helicopter. "Come on, you tin bastard…"

Then — silence.

No footsteps. No humming.

Just… stillness.

Eve's voice was barely audible. "It's too quiet."

Julian's eyes darted around the corridor. "No. He's recalibrating."

And then—

BOOM.

The far wall exploded inward, metal flying, dust choking the air. K-11 stepped through the rubble, blades extended, eyes locked on Eve.

The bot moved fast this time — terrifyingly fast.

Julian fired — one shot, two, three — lightning rounds cracked against its frame. The machine staggered, but didn't fall.

"Go!" Julian shouted. "Finish the upload!"

K-11 lunged.

Julian tackled it mid-strike, both of them crashing into the cables and debris. The shotgun clattered away. Sparks flew.

Eve turned back to the screen.

Tears streamed down her face as she screamed, "Hold him, Julian!"

---

Across the burning city, Lucian watched it all unfold on his private uplink. His fingers curled into fists.

"End this," he hissed.

---

Julian's body slammed into the server console. Blood spilled from his mouth. His ribs cracked under K-11's crushing grip.

But he smiled through the pain.

"Hey… Eve?" he coughed.

"Y-Yeah?"

He pressed a button on his belt. "Plan B."

---

A hidden mine under the floor blinked once.

Then exploded.

K-11 was thrown backward into a support beam, smoke billowing from its fractured chest plate.

Julian dropped to the ground, unconscious — or worse.

Eve screamed, "Julian!"

She crawled to the terminal, fingers trembling.

99%…

100%.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

A blast of light surged through the room. The drive melted from overload, but the signal was out — bouncing across satellites, hijacking news feeds, flooding every screen on Earth with the truth.

Nexus's crimes. The experiments. The lies.

All of it.

---

At Nexus HQ, alarms blared. Lucian's face paled as screens across the globe began to flicker with files he'd buried.

"No…" he whispered. "No… no no no!"

---

Back at the tower, the power died. Silence fell.

Eve crawled toward Julian, resting her forehead against his.

"Please don't die," she whispered. "We're not done yet."

A faint cough.

Then a whisper.

"Was it... 15 miles?"

She smiled through her tears. "And then some."
