Episode 55: Ghost Signals

---

Wind screamed through the open chopper as they lifted higher, the city fading into a blur of flame and shadow. Eve clutched the data drive to her chest, heart hammering with guilt, fear, and raw adrenaline.

Julian stared out the hatch, his eyes fixed on the rooftop they'd just fled.

No sign of Reese.

No movement.

Just smoke.

And silence.

Eve's voice broke through the storm. "He saved us."

Julian nodded slowly, jaw clenched. "And if he's alive, he'll find us."

The pilot turned, voice strained. "We've got enemy drones on our six. You've got five minutes to figure out where to drop."

Eve took out a small device and connected it to the data drive. A digital map lit up between them — pulses of red marking Nexus control centers, surveillance hubs, kill zones.

"There's one place they haven't touched," she muttered. "A dead zone — no signal, no surveillance. An old comms tower. We can finish the upload there."

Julian nodded. "Mark it."

---

Far below, under the rubble of the crumbling warehouse, Reese coughed violently, his body crushed between steel and dust. Blood dripped into his eye as he blinked through the haze.

Darkness threatened to consume him, but a weak blinking light on his wrist comm kept him tethered.

Julian's signal.

Faint. Distant. But still alive.

With a groan, Reese reached into his jacket and pulled out a mini-charge. He set it, closed his eyes, and whispered, "For the mission."

A muffled boom followed.

Dust scattered. A shaft of moonlight broke through.

And slowly — agonizingly — Reese dragged himself toward the light.

Meanwhile, in a sleek underground command room deep beneath Sector 9, Lucian paced like a lion, eyes scanning live footage of the burning skyline.

His analysts were scrambling, muttering about ghost signals and blind spots.

"Shut them down," Lucian said calmly. "I want the girl and the drive. No more games."

One of his lieutenants turned. "Sir… we lost visual on them after the extraction. They're off-grid."

Lucian's eyes narrowed. "They'll surface. They always do."

He leaned over the console and tapped into a hidden channel. A low hum filled the air, followed by a voice — cold, female, synthetic.

"Unit K-11 online."

Lucian smiled. "Good. Hunt them."

---

Back in the air, Julian tapped Eve on the shoulder. "We're approaching the comm tower. You ready?"

She looked down at the drive, then at Julian — eyes fierce.

"I was born ready."

The pilot shouted, "LZ is hot! I'm dropping you both and circling. No guarantees I can come back!"

"Do it," Julian barked. "We'll handle the rest."

The chopper dipped low. Wind howled. Eve jumped first, rolling into a crouch as she hit the rooftop. Julian followed seconds later, gun drawn.

All around them, the air buzzed with static — but the sky remained eerily quiet.

Too quiet.

Until—

BZZZZZZZTTTTT

A sudden pulse jammed every signal in the area. The lights on Eve's device flickered.

And then — a silhouette landed before them. Not from the air.

But from nowhere.

Sleek. Chrome. Unhuman.

Unit K-11.

Red eyes glowing. Arms transforming into blades.

Julian raised his gun.

Eve screamed, "Run!"

But it was too late.
