Episode 39: Beneath the Crimson Lake
The next morning, a thick fog blanketed the forest like a shroud of secrets.
Juvia and Ha-jun had moved swiftly, guided by the pull of the Lunar Sigil. Every few hours, it would glow faintly, tugging their path eastward—toward the place Lysian had whispered about in her dreams and visions: Crimson Lake.
They arrived by twilight.
The lake wasn't crimson by name alone. The surface shimmered red beneath the moonlight, like blood stirred by starlight. Around it, ancient trees leaned in, silent witnesses to forgotten truths.
Juvia shivered. "It feels like it's watching us."
Ha-jun nodded. "Because it is."
He stepped forward, crouching beside the water. "This place… it used to be sacred. A temple once stood beneath these waters—before it was drowned in the Moon Queen's wrath."
Juvia's voice trembled. "You remember?"
"Fragments." He touched the Sigil. "And the closer we get… the more I see."
Suddenly, the water rippled.
A humming sound filled the air, sharp and metallic, like a song being played backward.
Then—
A hand burst from the water.
Clawed. Pale. Dripping red.
Juvia screamed as a figure emerged—a woman with hair like tangled seaweed, face half rotted, eyes glowing blue with the drowned moon.
Ha-jun pulled Juvia back. "It's a Revenant! One of the cursed priests!"
The creature hissed, "You… broke… the seal…"
It lunged.
Ha-jun slashed with his blade, but it passed through her form like mist. The Revenant dissolved and reformed, now behind them, moving with inhuman speed.
Juvia closed her eyes, reaching into the bond between her and the Moonblade. A pulse answered.
She raised her hand—
And the blade of light formed again, stronger, brighter.
With a cry, she spun and slashed, striking the Revenant across its chest. This time, it howled in pain, falling back into the water.
Silence.
Then the lake began to churn—violently.
More hands. More glowing eyes.
"They're waking," Ha-jun muttered. "The temple is calling them."
Juvia looked down at the Sigil, now burning hot. "We need to go under."
"What?"
"If the next Sigil is there, we can't wait."
Ha-jun hesitated. "It could be a trap."
She looked him in the eyes. "Everything has been a trap. But we either go forward or we let the curse win."
He nodded.
Together, they dove into the crimson waters.
The cold bit into their skin like knives. Shapes moved around them—ghosts of drowned monks, twisted spirits bound by moonlight.
But they swam deeper.
And there, buried in coral and ruin, was the temple. Its door was sealed with glowing lunar script. As Juvia touched it, the markings responded to her presence.
They entered.
Inside was a vast hall, untouched by time. A moon altar sat in the center, and upon it rested the Second Sigil—glowing gold this time, humming with ancient energy.
As Juvia stepped forward to take it, a voice echoed around the chamber.
"One Sigil awakens the heart…
Two awaken the truth…
Three shall awaken the Queen."
She froze.
The Moon Queen wasn't just stirring.
She was being summoned.
And someone else was gathering the remaining Sigils too.
