Natalie's lower lip trembled as she looked up at Julian with those wide, teary eyes I'd come to despise. The police chief stood silently by the door, waiting for Julian's decision.
"Julian, please," Natalie whispered, her voice breaking perfectly. "I need to explain what happened. It wasn't my fault."
Julian's broad shoulders tensed, caught between his loyalty to the beautiful liar before him and the promise he'd just made to discover the truth. After a moment of heavy silence, he stepped aside, giving the police chief access to Natalie.
"I'll stay for the questioning," Julian said firmly.
Chief Garrison shook his head. "I need to speak with Miss Beaumont alone first."
"She's a member of my pack," Julian growled, his alpha authority seeping into his voice.
I couldn't hold back my bitter laugh. "And your grandmother was the Matriarch of your pack. Which one matters more to you, Julian?"
