Chapter 1 - chapter 1

The serenity of the morning was shattered by the sudden jolt of a cat landing on Mary's face. She stirred from her peaceful slumber, her dark hair scattered across the pillow like a tangled mess of night. As she opened her eyes, the cat, equally startled, let out a soft meow and leapt off the bed. Mary sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, and glanced at the clock. The numbers glowed 6:30, and a wave of panic washed over her. She was already running late.

With a sense of urgency, Mary threw off the covers and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Her feet dangled in the air for a moment before she planted them firmly on the ground. The cool floorboards beneath her feet were a welcome respite from the warmth of her bed. She hastily washed her face and tidied her hair, her mind already racing with the tasks that lay ahead.

As she rushed out of the house, Mary grabbed her bag and headed to the bus stop. The morning air was crisp, and the sun was slowly rising over the horizon. She quickened her pace, her eyes fixed on the bus approaching in the distance. Relief washed over her as she saw the bus, but it was short-lived.

In the blink of an eye, everything changed. A massive truck barreled down on an elderly woman attempting to cross the road, oblivious to the danger. Without hesitation, Mary sprang into action, pushing the woman out of the way just in time. But the truck's impact was unavoidable, and Mary's world went dark.

The darkness was absolute, and then there was nothing. When Mary came to, she was in a hospital bed, surrounded by the sterile white walls and the faint beeping of machines. She tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over her, forcing her to lie back down. She was thirsty and wanted to drink some water. She reached out her hand towards the water bottle on her bedside table. As her hand approached the bottle, it suddenly began to float in mid-air. Mary's eyes widened in shock and amazement. As she quickly pulled her hand back, the bottle floated away from her, and the water spilled out, falling to the floor.
