Chapter 22 - Unlikely Allies & Hidden Foes

"Took you long enough to get that barbarian off of me", the blue-haired man gasped out. Rubbing around his throat, where he could still feel the tight grip.

Sami grumbled at the barbarian mark but didn't say anything as he looked at Lyra. Lyra finally stood up straight from leaning against the wall, but she looked conflicted. She began to walk towards them, albeit at a slow pace.

"You know I almost missed your sorry ass, but now I remember how insufferable you are", Lyra chuckled.

"Welp I'm just lucky to be alive after everything", the blue haired man replied.

Sami looked at them before cutting in, "Sorry for interrupting the conversation but your friend on the ground is still injured. Also who the hell are you?" Pointing at the blue-haired man as he made his way to his feet.

"Isn't it rude to ask for someone's name before introducing yourself?" the blue-haired man questioned. "Those of low birth have no class.

"Want me to kick your ass again you prep school asshole", Sami lashed out getting into the man's face.

"Ladies, ladies calm down", Lyra mocked. "Let's all just settle down, it's not that serious". Putting a hand on Sami's shoulder to calm him down.

The blue-haired man took note of the hand, his face took a dark look before returning to normal. Sami took a couple deep breaths as tired to calm down, not wanting to make a bad impression on the person he saved.

"So Sami this Poke. Poke this is Sami", Lyra introduced.

"What a girlie name", Poke chuckled out.

Sami shrugged in response. "At least my name doesn't make me sound like a bitch."

Poke growled but didn't say anything as he went to check on the girl that still hasn't moved from the ground. Lyra followed Poke while Sami went to go pick up the pack that he placed on the ground earlier at the entrance of the alley.

Sami decided to not walk back towards the group he really didn't feel like putting up with the snotty asshole. Besides that Sami was happy with how fair he has come with his training. Though if what he knows is true about the familiar spell a lot of his growth probably comes from the minotaur and Onyx both being connected to him.

Either way he bet if he fights the Gbahali now he wouldn't struggle as much as he did before. Honestly he could probably overwhelm the creature with mostly his pure strength. Though that could be Sami being a little overconfident.

A hand on his shoulder caused Sami to quickly turn around. Looking down he saw the same old lady from before.

"Young man I'd like to offer my apologies from before", the old lady stated before bowing. Leaning heavily on the cane in front of herself.

"AhHH! Ma'am please you don't have to bow.", Squeaked Sami. Putting his hands out in embarrassment at the situation.

The old Lady straightened up as she looked at Sami. "I am ashamed of my actions, I just assumed you were part of the people who were trying to attack me.", She explained.

"Seriously it's okay ma'am I helped because I could not because I wanted something in return", Sami tried, but the old lady looked as if she didn't believe him.

Without warning Sami was put in a headlock as Lyra gave him a noogie.

"Ugh Lyra get off me", Sami pleaded as he tried to push her off but she held on strong.

Lyra refused to let go though. "Common bookworm I've been training you for the past month you think you'd be stronger by now."

"First off I have all my weights on you don't cheater", Sami bickered. "Second off you haven't-"

"I haven't what?"Lyra finished.

Sami waved his arms in panic as Lyra's arm tightened around his neck. "Nothing Teacher Lyra, just you have been the best teacher a person could ask for", he squealed.

"Thats what I thought", Lyra asserted.

"Better be careful before Lyra decides to kick your ass again Samii boy", Onyx teased.

"Not helping Onyx", Sami replied.

The Old lady laughed at the two of them as they kept fighting with each other. Poke noticed the scene as he walked closer to the group, the young mage on his back though she was still unconscious.

"Seriously, why are you always so uncouth", Poke muttered as he shook his head in disappointment.

"Lyra has been like that since I first met her years ago", the old Lady chuckled.

Poke looked at the Old Lady in confusion."You know Lyra, Lady Akio?" he inquired.

"Yes actually I know her very well", Akio replied but didn't elaborate at all.

Annoying Poke, but Akio didn't care, deciding to watch the scene with a small smile on her face. Loving the fact the serious little girl that once saved her life actually knows how to smile. Akio always wanted to see Lyra smile like this, it warms her heart at the sudden death of her son.

Poke, annoyed at not getting the answers he wanted, felt a nagging sense that he'd forgotten something. Sigh, he looked at Lyra and Sami in frustration. It's up to Poke to be the main adult and break them up. They need to get back to Akio's shrine before it gets too dark. This city has a high crime rate, and it'll be easier to protect her in a much more secure location.

"Unbeknownst to the group, the man Sami had knocked out secretly transformed into a bat. Flying away when everyone was distracted. The man had revenge on his mind as he decided to go back to his boss to tell him about what happened.

As one of the new members to the group he is not as strong as the other members yet, but he makes up for it by having special skills. Such as being able to go into the sun, others can't do that without being weakened or dying.

Yes, the man will remember this humiliating defeat as Cassian refuses to let that boy live. His thoughts turned dark as he tried to come up with ways he could defeat the kid. He'll still have to complete the mission to get that book from the old lady as wellIf they can get their hands on her magic, it'll bolster their forces and make them even stronger."
