"I wanna go home! I wanna go hoooommmmeee!" a man sang drunkenly. "I WANNA GO HOOOOOMEEE!"
Sami had been hearing this man sing since they threw the drunkard into the cell a couple of hours ago. Honestly, getting arrested wasn't an experience he'd ever want to deal with again. The worst part, he thought, was being forced to endure the same obsessive singing.
Sami was irritated not just by the drunken serenade, but by the fact that the guards never took off the chains. He couldn't even feel his magic; it was like before he got the ring. He felt normal, yet also tired. It was hard for Sami to put into words.
"Life in the hole can only be fulfilled by…" the drunken man sang, distracting Sami from his thoughts again.
Sami looked toward the man. "If you keep singing, I'll rip out your tongue from your neck, then shove it up your ass," he threatened the drunkard.
The man gulped and decided to lie on a bed of hay. Sami, seeing him quiet down, leaned back into the corner of the cell he was in. He began to think of ways to escape, though without any word from Lyra, he didn't want to make a decision yet.
"I feel you should just sit back and wait for Lyra," a feminine voice echoed through his head.
Sami's head snapped up. "Onyx?!" he whispered, almost shouting.
The man in the corner looked at Sami strangely, wondering if something was wrong with him. Sami ignored the looks, scanning the cage and wondering if he was going crazy.
"No, you're not going crazy," cackled Onyx.
"Ugh, where are you?" questioned Sami, looking around the cell.
"Wh-where… is… hiccup… who?" the drunk man slurred out. Sami shook his head in frustration as he paced back and forth, completely ignoring the drunken words, finding them a waste.
"Sami, just calm down," Onyx urged. "I went back into the familiar mark. I don't know if you recall, but mine is located in your hand."
"Wait, wait, what?" Sami said, confused. "I have a mark on my hand? Since when? Actually, how are you talking to me right now?"
"Look… look, man… hiccup… I haven't b-been talking to you at all," the man slurred. "I d-don't want any pro-problems with you."
Sami stopped pacing and turned to face the man. "No one is talking to you," he growled.
Before the drunken man could reply, the door to the cell opened. Two guards came quickly, one of them crouching before the drunken man, making sure to stay between the man and Sami to stop any more arguing.
"Easy, Chase, we are just going to let you sober up here and send you on your way home," soothed the guard as the drunken man began to calm down.
"Follow me, and don't cause any more problems, prisoner," the second guard sneered at Sami, stepping closer to Sami's face while tightening his hand around the spear he was holding.
Sami decided not to cause any issues and began to follow the guard out of the cell. The guard stood and quickly followed Sami. Sami looked across at the cell Lyra was in and noticed that it was empty.
"Move it!" the guard behind him commanded, pushing Sami, making him lose balance for a moment before stabilizing himself from falling.
Sami clenched his fist before opening it again. He didn't want to cause any more trouble for himself or Lyra. Taking a deep breath, he continued following the guard out the door.
"Good job controlling your anger!" Onyx whispered as if someone might overhear her. "Also, this time, before speaking out loud, think of your words."
Like this? Can you hear me? Sami thought.
"See, look at that! Good job, kiddo, you're learning," Onyx snarkily replied.
Sami decided not to reply to Onyx as he squinted his eyes at the bright light, before finding himself back in the entrance of the jail. Standing in the doorway was the leader who had stopped them, and Lyra, with her training gear back on. The leader looked slightly scared, with a noticeable black eye.
"Well, well, I wonder if Lyra had something to do with the man's demeanor," Onyx chuckled.
"Honestly, I don't want to know", Sami replied.
The sudden movement caused Sami to break his thoughts as the guard he was following grabbed his hands. Roughly, the guard began to unlock the handcuffs, annoyance plastered on his face.
"Tell your man to calm down, Captain, unless you want further issues on your head," Lyra stressed as she glared at the guard unlocking the handcuffs.
"Ryan, cease antagonizing that boy, before I have you suspended!" the Captain commanded.
"Sir!" Ryan acknowledged before quickly finishing his task.
Ryan and the other guard quickly walked back into the cell blocks once finished with the handcuffs. Sami rubbed his wrists as energy began to course through him again. Being able to sense the world around him was something that he wouldn't take for granted again.
"I apologize for the inconvenience I have caused to your investigation!" the Captain admitted, bowing to both Lyra and Sami. "If needed, feel free to come back to the guards' station, and we will help you with your task."
Sami, in shock, didn't say anything as he glanced at the guard who was still bowing to him. He could even feel Onyx's shock through the bond they shared.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say!" Lyra interrupted. "Here, bookworm, take your stuff and let's get going. We missed a lot of time anyway."
The Captain, after hearing that, rose from the bow and walked out the front door. Sami didn't think twice before putting his training gear back on along with the pack holding everyone's stuff.
Lyra walked out of the building once she saw Sami was dressed and ready to go. Marching off at a brisk pace, Sami quickly followed behind her as he hiked up the pack onto his shoulders.
"So, what did you do to the guards back there? They seemed awfully afraid of you," Sami couldn't help but ask.
Lyra just glanced at Sami from the corner of her eye. She took a moment to think but just shook her head and continued walking faster.
"Just keep up, we'll be outside of Havenwood soon," Lyra shouted.
"So are you going to answer my question?" Sami asked, confused. "Lyra, hey Lyra!"
No reply came as she sped up her pace, forcing Sami to speed up so as not to be left behind.
